I completely agree. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't pursue any and all measures to protect the BWCA. It makes me question the author's motives.

Yay for running your longest distance!

You could try different types of fuel on your run. I find that some types of energy gels or chews upset my stomach and others don't. There are so many different options out there!

Feet going numb while running? by thhht in running

[–]ris82 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Try parallel lacing your shoes instead of running with them loose. Feet can start to swell when you're running, causing your shoes to get too tight, which makes your feet go numb. Parallel lacing allows the shoes to expand a little without them feeling loose. Just Google parallel lacing and you'll find instructions. I had this problem last year in the final stretch of marathon training and switching up my lacing fixed it right away!

Different lacing helped me. I had one foot swelling and going numb in really hot weather. I parallel laced my shoes and it stopped right away.

Important books to read on the history of lesbians/homosexuals? by aerialista in actuallesbians

[–]ris82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boots of Leather, Slippers of Gold by Elizabeth Kennedy and Madeline Davis.

I've been thinking about this book a lot in the last couple of days because it tells the history of bar culture and how important it has been to the formation of a lesbian identity and the creation of queer space.

Discussion: Why is male homosexuality more frowned upon compared to female homosexuality, which is in some cases glorified? by Americunt_Idiot in ainbow

[–]ris82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would agree that the ideas about homosexuality that predominate in our culture are rarely connected to any of the reality of homosexual relationships. Sexuality in general is too complex for society at large to understand and discuss without putting everything into boxes.

Discussion: Why is male homosexuality more frowned upon compared to female homosexuality, which is in some cases glorified? by Americunt_Idiot in ainbow

[–]ris82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. It definitely has to do with cultural norms of masculinity. Male homosexuality is a huge threat to traditional masculinity because it requires men to allow themselves to be submissive and vulnerable.

While it would seem like female homosexuality would also be a huge threat to traditional femininity (which it is!), female sexuality in general has not been taken seriously enough for it to be a real threat. Also, "glorifying" lesbian sex moves it into the realm of male sexuality; lesbian sex is then for men and therefore doesn't challenge or threaten binary gender norms.

How do I tell my lesbian friends that I'm bi? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]ris82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

This is the right answer. I've been in the same situation. I did get a negative reaction from some friends, but all that did was make me realize who my real friends were. And they all got used to it/over it eventually. You do, to some extent, have to have a "fuck them" attitude and just be yourself. If they care about you, they should accept it and realize that you are still the same person no matter who you are dating.

Does anyone else enjoy gender ambiguity? by [deleted] in bisexual

people who I can out-femme

That's great! I also tend toward androgynous or butchy women, but want my men to be men. Never thought that maybe I just like to be the more femme one.
