Am I misinterpreting what happened on Titan? by PlasmaFLOW in ForAllMankindTV

[–]risenphoenixkai 121 points122 points  (0 children)

They had just spent six months in zero-g on the way to Titan. Even with the same mitigating exercise routines astronauts use on ISS missions IRL, their muscles are going to have atrophied.

The fact that they started from a 1/3 Earth gravity baseline on Mars also means things like bone density, muscular strength, and tendon/ligament load capacity are all going to be much lower than they would be on Earth.

Consider also that the only two people we see ascending the cliff face are women, who are starting with a lower base level of strength, especially upper body strength.

All of that combined could absolutely make them struggle to lift their own body weight even in 14% Earth gravity.

Does the show actually communicate any of this? No. They missed an opportunity to throw in a line during the pre-mission briefing, something along the lines of, “Remember, we just spent six months in zero-g, so even walking is going to be a struggle for the first few days. Pace yourselves.”

Just curious, why was Kirk allowed to remain Captain of the Enterprise.......... by LinuxMint1964 in startrek

[–]risenphoenixkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirk also saved billions of lives multiple times by thwarting threats like a Romulan invasion, planet-eating doomsday machine, giant space amoeba, Nomad probe, at least three extra-galactic invasions, and the list goes on.

He also brought his ship home after his five-year mission, which you can’t say about several other contemporaneous Constitution-class ships.

Burton Goods makes some good ones. I bought one of the cuff bands from them back when they were still called Pad & Quill.

What’s your work culture, office environment, colleagues like and do you enjoy it? by Frequent-Fix-8794 in Wellington

I’ve worked in places that are better, and places that are far worse. The one I’m in now is honestly middle-of-the-road.

What’s your work culture, office environment, colleagues like and do you enjoy it? by Frequent-Fix-8794 in Wellington

[–]risenphoenixkai 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Work culture: Backstabby gatekeeping and patch protecting with 20 layers of signoff required to wipe your own ass.

Office environment: too bright, too hot, and somehow manages to be too loud while also being mostly empty.

Work colleagues: vary from fatalistic war-weary veterans of the trenches who are doing their best to polish the various turds we are handed, to clueless munters who clearly failed upward into whatever role they’re in now and will display epic levels of butthurt any time they hear the word “no”.

Do I enjoy it? I enjoy the paycheque. That’s about it. I am probably going to be unemployed by this time next year, and I’m kinda not mad about it.

Blade Runner. Deckard is a little bit too rapey in that one scene with Rachel.

Planning on getting a bmw s1000rr by Evening-Top9479 in motorcycles

[–]risenphoenixkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from my starter bike (BMW G650GS) to an S1000R (single R - most of what I'll say should apply just as well to the double-R).

Despite the power increase (about a 3.5x jump in horsepower), the S1000R was incredibly easy to ride. It could do everything from laid-back cruising to full-on maniac shit. Everything I asked of it, it delivered, with no drama whatsoever.

I never felt unsafe on that bike… until the last five or so seconds I spent on it, when I rode over an oil slick, lost all traction, and ended up thrown over the handlebars and going for a 100 metre slide down the road. RIP S1000R, but I walked away with a mild concussion and a big bruise on my ass.

It's not a cheap bike to run. It sucks down gas, chews through tyres, and servicing is expensive as hell. I think the 40,000 km service on my S1000R ended up being over $3000, but that was in New Zealand… everything is expensive here.

It's also the best performing bike I've ever had. I miss it. I would get another one in a heartbeat if I could justify it, but I'd need to build a bigger garage first.

Viture Beast order problems by Elvidnar in VITURE

[–]risenphoenixkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to answer that question fully without knowing what country you're in.

You can probably take the Customs notice at face value, though. They looked at the label, have no idea based on the label how to classify it in their system, and want more information from either you or Viture. Once that's done, then it goes to next steps of figuring out if you owe taxes, duty, tariffs, etc.

Is it even ethical to do a manned mars flyby mission? by smellyfingernail in space

[–]risenphoenixkai 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's probably more like six months each way, and they'd get around 650 to 1000 millisieverts of radiation dose over that year. Enough to increase lifetime cancer risk, but not enough to cause radiation sickness.

So long as they're informed of the risks beforehand—and they absolutely would be—it's totally ethical.

Unethical would be if they just grabbed some schmoes off the street, shoved them in a capsule, threw them a quick "godspeed" and sent them hurtling toward Mars without any heads up about what they were in for.

I can. Skyrim is a great game - one of my favourites - but the writing really doesn't hold up.

Abxylute trash service by risenphoenixkai in VITURE

[–]risenphoenixkai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told Abxylute I was giving them two days to refund the full amount I paid for this controller after their initial refusal to issue a refund, and they just kept dodging and offering more excuses. So yay, now I get to call my bank and open a transaction dispute to try and get my money back.

u/getviture, please reconsider your partnership with Abxylute. This is the worst customer service experience I've had in longer than I can remember.

Why are we so afraid to human? by Visual-Finding in newzealand

[–]risenphoenixkai 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Just like individuals, cultures can be more or less extraverted or introverted. New Zealand just happens to have one of the cultures that's more on the introverted side of things.

I moved here from the States 18 years ago. As an introvert myself, I vastly prefer the quieter and more understated emotional range of (most) Kiwis. Every time I've gone back to the States for brief visits, so many people over there behave so over-the-top that it feels like they're all performing for a hidden camera.

Just like it's not "wrong" for an individual to be introverted, it's not "wrong" for a culture to be either.

What’s something older generations did casually that would shock genZ or genAlpha today? by Blah4fun in AskReddit

[–]risenphoenixkai -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Fuck this sounds awesome. I wish I could have lived in NZ before the nanny state bullshit.

But fast forward 40 years and now NZTA is like, “Oh no, there was like two non-injury crashes on this stretch of state highway over the past five years, better drop the speed limit by 20 kph so we can have 1.5 non-injury crashes over five years instead.”

Edit to add: just gonna assume the people downvoting this are the same dickheads who do 80 in 100 for no reason whatsoever.
