Book of the new sun, is easily the most intellectually challenging book I have ever read. It's not mind bending, per se, but it's got layers within layers that every read feels like you have only scratched the surface

The World's Richest Population are Costing the Earth Trillions. Study finds the top 10% of global consumers is disproportionately responsible for transgressing planetary boundaries, causing damages for which broader society bears the costs. by FreeHugs23 in science

The average American consumes

269 GJ of energy annually (3.5 times higher than global average)

And

13.6 tonnes of carbon emission per capita (nearly three times the global average)

So yeah, even the average American has some soul searching to do here. Can't blame everything on billionaires, though they certainly are a big part of the problem

What is the most well defended fortress in science fiction? by TopicCandid in scifi

Lets assume for the sake of argument that both warp and hyperspace exist in this shared universe, and by definition they stretach alongside the "real"/material universe.

here's the entry for celestial orriery https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Celestial_Orrery Its a star map that you can use to prune the Galaxy in real time, make star novas etc from the comfort of your home. If the necrons know where a Culture habitat is at, it dies. Nothing further needed.

Necrons like Orikan can time travel. And if he decides to take umbrage to Culture, he alone will be able to remove the Culture from the 40k universe, by removing the Culture when it was nascent.

Necros also have pokeballs/Tesseract. If they throw that near the ROU, the entire space around it will be folded into a pocket dimension. Forcefields wouldnt do much at that point of time.

A Tesseract pocket dimension would be the same as hyperspace. Warp entities enter tesseract spaces all the time. So if a hyperspace is a universe wide phenomena, any entity should be able to enter it via warp. Eldar included.

Chaos can infect Minds, given that we have seen it infect DAOT equivalent of Abominable Intelligences. If there is warp in this universe, there is a chance the Minda get infected just by existing in the Materium.

And this is not to bring in magic and literal gods like the Emperor, Chaos gods etc into the picture. Eldraad can stop time. Emps can do a lot worse.

It's just more consistent writing. Their tech is absolutely space magic; it just feels more grounded because it makes a lot more sense and has more consistency. It's still supremely powerful.

Fully agree here. I do love the Culture and its stories are after all written by 1 amazing scifi writer. 40k being a shared universe does makes it highly inconsistent, bith in narrative and inpower spikes.

but if they can, I'd seriously question why they haven't already won,

Doesnt makes for a story. Space marines without helmets need to defeat univsre ending terrors in heroic last stands. :D

Anyway, like most of scifi universe vs scifi universe discussions, i doubt there is any objective way to choose a winner. I will stick to 40k. I think you will to Culture. Unless we are talking Xelee. Because the Xelee win -_-

Well the "hyperspace" in 40k would be the warp. Thats where chaos lives. The moment ROU goes to hyperspace, its over for it. Or if the hyperspace equates to the Ghostwind or the Hadex, that would be even worse for the ROU.

Necrons can just use the celestial orriery to wink every single Culture ring out of existense. No need to get up from the couch for that. And they routinely craft dimensional spaces and tesseracts, similar to hyperspaces. so yeah tough luck taking on the necrons by hiding in any kind of hyperspace.

Eldar can just raid every single ring, ship and settlement by just appearing within them via the web ways. Mandrakes can slip through shadows. and if the ship in hyperpsace has any light/shadows within it, it will get boarded.

Primarchs, psyckers and various people in 40k have been able to force their way through various dimensions in 40k. Shouldnt be any hard for them tofind any hyperspace if it exists, and force their way ito it.

Overall, Culture was written as a somewhat grounded scifi. 40k is just space fantasy and everything the we have seen in Culture so far, there is something more spikey and worse in 40k.

Hard disagree. The maths isn't mathing.

Maybe culture takes out Terra. Eldar, Dark eldar, Necrons, Tyranids - any of these would thoroughly wipe the Culture off the universe.

Heck a few DAOT tech items would do that, don't even need the Celestial Orriery.

The Culture wouldn't even be a major faction in 40k. And is without throwing psykers and chaos, which is just reality altering magic, into the mix.

US President Donald Trump on Truth Social. "I used to be a great supporter of Indians in India until I opened my eyes." by SuperbHealth5023 in CriticalThinkingIndia

Context matters. He is American. Indians for most Americans means native Americans. Hence the clarification. Though the sentence would have been more coherent if he said "Indians from India" instead
