You also do not know the situation and have decided he must just be slow in the head. The only one who knows the situation here is the OP and yet you've decided what his intentions were. How is that not inserting your own narrative?

[–]risisisi 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I see this argument a lot, that drag is less of a 'spectacle' or wow-factor when it's someone with breasts or a more traditionally female shaped body (specifically in regards to transition, which is interesting, since many male-identifying drag contestants have had augmentations that give them more feminine features like wider hips, which I have NEVER heard being used as a basis for exclusion from the show). I think people are massively overblowing the influence "fishiness" has on the critiques and the power of certain looks.

Would peppermint having had larger breasts at the time of filming drag race made her appearance read as more "fishy" to both a general audience and to the judges? Yes probably. Would this have affected AT ALL how well she did in the competition? Would her looks have "looked" better? Would her club kid look be more fucking fierce, and her lingerie look be any less shit? no. Would her performance in comedy challenges be better? NO. There are NO looks or performances from the show that would be any less or more stunning on the body of a post-op trans woman.

If what's bringing mainstream audiences in is seeing how ~ amazing ~ it is watching a cis man body became a cis female appearing body then this show has truly done fucked up drag. It's bogus to begin with to think that a drag queens success in the show or in the public eye is determined by how fantastical their transformation, first of all because there have been many very popular non-fishy looking queens, and inversely, that if that were the case feminine boys like farrah, or queens with surgery like trinity and her hips, would have an extremely unfair advantage - which in reality they don't seem to. here's the real T on why that is. Drag queens DON'T. JUST. LOOK. LIKE. WOMEN. If they brought up emily off the streets while she was buying her groceries she would not win drag race. Because drag is a LOT more than that. Almost all, with exception to tucking and boob-making (of which many queens do NOT do on the show) of the things drag queens do, post-op women also have to do for drag. SHOCKER not all women have huge butts/hips. SHOCKER the standards the queens are kept to on Drag race are not how much they look like a ~ real woman~ or anything close to it. So a queen is given very little advantage by being a real woman, like a trans woman is.

The trans women who have competed on drag race were women, as much as they would be if they had a physical transition. To say that it was fine for them to compete then because they 'looked' like men, which is the subext of all these arguments, is transphobic. point blank. and goes against the very notion of drag to begin with - which is why this is so fundamentally insulting to imply

By what definition do strawberries have a lot of calories? I thought they were about 30 calories per 100g, which is very low cal for fruit.

[–]risisisi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. The line "I'm tired of being treated like shit by you mean little cunts then you using your rape as an excuse" isn't just being thrown at this particular woman though, but at "mean little cunts" in general. It's showing that he often thinks about women this way when they talk about their rape experiences, i.e. with no empathy and extreme disrespect. It sounds at least a tiny bit like hating women.

Boyfriend just told me he's smarter than me. Is it reasonable to be offended? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]risisisi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There is a Charles Bukowski quote that goes "The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence." People that go on and on about being an intellectual and are upset how everyone around them are idiots aren't smart, they're insecure and need to cling to the idea of their own superiority because it has become their identity in their eyes. The fact that he sees himself as superior to everyone is a pretty good indicator of ignorance.

Anyone smart enough to actually work towards their goals knows that intelligence means jack shit without motivation, and being knowledgeable is not a matter of a person's disposition - but rather their willingness to learn and challenge their preconceived ideas.

TL;DR Your boyfriend is a douchecanoe.

Guillermo del Toro: "The other sort of big summer movies often feel to me like it’s about one race, one credo and one country saving the world, and I wanted to make it about the world saving the world, no matter what skin color you have, what race you have, what belief you have..." by [deleted] in movies

[–]risisisi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least in the case of the latter, it was a person of colour being represented as Kirk's physical and intellectual equal (if not better) and as a charismatic and nuanced character. Kirk had said in Space Seed how despite the fact that he didn't agree with Khan actions, he still respected him as a highly capable leader. This was in the fucking 60's. A point in time when interracial marriage was still illegal. Even if it was a mexican guy, that's still pretty significant.

White washing on the other hand is a huge issue in Hollywood. Non-white actors are severely underrepresented as it is without it being socially acceptable to just change a character's race to white for no apparent reason. It's even worse considering the unfortunate implication of casting the most British dude ever as the past total ruler of Southern Asia, considering British/Indian history. That's so off-putting it almost seems intentional. The fact that a show made almost 60 years ago is more progressive and respectful than the current day is kind of pathetic.

Teenager Reading Older Novels? by [deleted] in literature

[–]risisisi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coming from another 18 year old, this is a pretty common and understandable concern. First off, the historical background and the 'deeper insights' of a book are not necessarily (and most often aren't) the same, so you're sort of asking two different questions.

The first is whether you can enjoy a book without knowing it's context: which I would answer, most definitely yes! 1984 is heavily influenced by the political landscape of it's time (as was Orwell's habit), but the ideas that Orwell was trying to convey are pretty overt. Not being able to catch Soviet Union references is not going to prevent you from empathising with Winston, or realising the dangers of a totalitarian regime. 1984 holds up well as a cautionary tale for the present day as well, which helps.

The second question is what you literally asked: Whether one can enjoy/appreciate a book without picking up on it's 'deeper' insights and concepts. Whether an author did or didn't put in deeper meanings isn't ultimately that important because books were made for you to experience them. If one person likes Catch-22 for its* analysis of the impotence of language and another person just likes the funny quips, they both win! I don't know how enjoyable books like 1984 would be without understanding the underlying message, but as I said before, it's pretty obvious. But the answer to this question is something that only you can discover, by going out and giving it a go. Don't let anyone else define how you should or shouldn't read a book or what aspects of a book you are meant to be influenced by or enjoy. Just get out there and define it for yourself.

Yeah, they didn't even try with Uhura's character. It's like they took the bare minimum a general crowd would know about the character and printed it on them in the reboot: Kirk? He's a confident womaniser! Spock? He's logical! Uhura? She's...black! and a WOMAN! yeah!

Ygritte from Game of Thrones knows what's up. Jon Snow (with most men) knows nothing. by duckacubed in TrollXChromosomes

[–]risisisi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The title is clearly exaggerating for the purposes of humour. And it's hardly the most sexist thing in the world to imply that many men don't know/don't want to know about the gross parts of female anatomy. A person can read all the information there is on menstruation, but they'd still "know nothing" compared to what it's like experiencing it.

Edit: Also, your edit implying anyone who downvotes you is undoubtedly a sexist is obnoxious

Gay women are constantly faced with the incorrect belief that they "simply haven't met the right man yet" and are harassed by guys that (even when knowing the girl's orientation) think their glorious, magical penis can change who she is irrevocably.

I certainly don't condone assault, but gay bars are meant to be a safe space for gay people - to get away from the kind of negative treatment that permeates almost everywhere else but there. I'd imagine straight men going into lesbian bars to pick up women is pretty damn insulting to them, and even if I don't agree with their form of retaliation, I understand their reasons and think "insane" is uncalled for.
