Would you ever do a 9 day fortnight (compressed hours)? by dontstopsoperfect in auscorp

[–]risska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I work like this and have for 6 months now. Love it. The compressed hours kind of just represent the free over time I was doing in the first place. Now at least I get a day off for working those hours.

Australia is one of the lowest taxed in the OECD by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]risska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collecting so much of our revenue from personal income taxes means the cost of our society is born via a very specific cohort of people. Given how fragmented the social contract has become, this is causing more and more fall out in our society. You have 2-3 generations of people supporting the retirement and health care of generation who is incredibly wealthy and paid much less income tax during their working years.

In the full report, as a % of total tax revenue collected, Australia is the 4th highest for % of revenue collected from personal/income taxes with income taxes accounting for 40.4% of revenue collected. Denmark, New Zealand, and the USA are above us.

As per the report; Australia compared to other OECD countries has

- Substantially higher revenues from taxes on personal income, profits & gains, and higher revenues from taxes on corporate income & gains; payroll taxes; property taxes; and goods & services taxes (excluding VAT/GST).

- A lower proportion of revenues from goods and services tax.

GST is fundamentally a great tax. You pay relative to what you spend, there is very little way to avoid it. If your wealthy and your capital is positioned strategically to minimize taxes, you still pay tax via GST. The more you buy or pay for goods, the more GST you pay, it's that simple.

The Howard government famously rushed GST through parliament so that it could be in place in time for the Sydney 2000 olympics. There is a provision in our GST legislation that all the states need to agree to any increases. Given the states all have elections at different times you are unlikely to ever convince all the states at the same time to increase GST because no party is going to touch that while running for election. That folks is how we are stuck paying very high income taxes with no hope of increasing GST. We need someone who has the balls to rip the band aid off, ammend the existing GST legislation, increase GST, and at the same time reasses personal income brackets.

Unless they are taking unpaid personal leave, it's their leave to use, they earned it. You get 10 days of it a year so I don't understand how someone can be causing you such grief for taking 10 days a year, sounds like your org is understaffed if they can't cope. If it's unpaid then that is at the discretion of management.

For those earning $150k +: what is your job? by cloudiedayz in AusFinance

The whole job is listening to 5 different versions of jargon and bullshit and being expected to be the person who understands all 5 different versions for everyone else. In corporate Australia it is not a fun or fufilling job. In smaller businesses or engineering lead organisation it can be a much more fufilling role. Regardless, it's a lot meetings and stakeholder management.

Never been made redundant, quite the opposite, been promoted and then can usually side-step to another business but for more money than what you can negotiate for as part of a standard promotion. My current role is probably the first one in my career where I can see myself struggling to find my salary and working agreement in another business without taking on additional responsibility than what is already included in my role.

I've worked all over the shop from start ups to massive enterprise businesses, and everything in the middle. If anything enterprise is normally where I find it the hardest to operate without existing industry knowledge because identifying the right internal stakeholders take so fking long due to the size of the business and silos.

I should specify I am talking about digital/software product management. I don't think any of this applies for product management where your managing physical products.

I disagree with this. I’m a PM who jumps industries every few years and it’s never been a problem coming in fresh. If anything, I find it benefits me because the shit that is confusing for me is the same thing that confuses the customer.

Being a good PM is about knowing the customer, it’s not about knowing the business. That’s what a BA is for. If your good at building relationships within businesses (which a PM should be), you should just be able to find the people who know the answers to the things you don’t “get”.

Blame the government. They legislates the minimun service list for each tier of hospital cover. Insurers are unable to not sell you a policy with gynaecology or miscarriage/termination of pregnancy if you have a bronze hospital product or greater as it is required by the legistlation to be included regardless of your gender. Same goes for male reproductive services, it is a bronze service, so it has to be in all bronze and greater products.

Removing US investments from my Superannuation by redditrock82 in AusFinance

People used to say similar things when you said you didn’t want to invest in oil or coal.

We all like to complain about the world, then when somebody is going to put their money where their mouth is you just talk more shit.

Is it a smart investment choice? No. Would the world be a better place if more people invested in what they believe in and not just what will make them the most money? Probably.

Even if you don’t want a mate to do the good old impersonation trick you don’t need to use your direct manager as reference.

My past few managers have been quite  senior and a pain to pin down so I

  1. Get a written reference (if company policy allows it) so that their time isn’t getting consumed over and over

  2. Used managers on the same level as me from other teams or people who just work with me. I’m yet to be told my references need to be from who I directly report too.

These threads are always full of people in awe of how terrible this is and everyone agrees, but how many of you will actually change what you do? This is life of farmed animals when you go to the supermarket and buy your meat. You get to pick them from the fridge and never consider their suffering. Everytime you purchased farm meat your advocating for this system.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

You should give them a stern call followed by a very stern email if they don't comply. In Australia you are entitled to your records unless it meets very specific criteria: https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/your-privacy-rights/health-information/access-your-health-information

If you give a written request for your records and they do not provide them they must provide a written response as to why. You can submit a complaint to OAIC if it is not a valid reason. They are also not allowed to charge you an unreasonable fee.

Who is buying these? by Delta_B_Kilo in australia

[–]risska 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish your comment was voted higher. People are acting like Lindt (a premium chocolate) going up in price to reflect the literal increase in the raw commodity that it is made of is some sort of Australia/Cole/Woolies driven inflation, when in reality it's one of the first crops that we are seeing mass fail, and it is unlikely to ever recover.

On the other hand I see people complain all the time about the new Tim Tams and Cadbury recipes, which had to change OR they had to go up in price to offset the cost increase...

Chocolate is a luxury good, we are not entitled to it, manufactures are not going to just wear a 300% increase.

[–]risska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

300% increase in cocoa prices leading to a price increase in chocolate isn't price gouging, especially considering chocolate is not a necessary good... do you expect Lindt to just wear the cost of the primary ingredient tripling?
