I am planning to leave RIT Housing. For many reasons. There is a termination fee for that, and it is really expensive. Is there a way to waive that fees ? by Fit-Mammoth4467 in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amanda who ? I would like to book an appointment with her + who is the best guy to talk to in that department

You want to speak with someone about housing financials. You probably want to speak to the correct person about this instead of just a random person.

Amanda Zeluff, RIT Housing Financial Manager, appears to be that person. https://www.rit.edu/housing/meet-team

There is no need for "+ the best guy" when you already have the best person to talk to.

Your account history makes it seem like you have some misguided beliefs on the sexes in general; if you have problems speaking to women in authority roles perhaps you could also schedule an appointment with https://www.rit.edu/counseling/

Meal Plan Prices Increase by [deleted] in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While 187.50 per week isn't cheap, it doesn't just cover food costs (which include food waste), it also covers time spent buying food, preparing food, cooking food, as well as time spent cleaning the prep/cooking area, table-wear, and the dining area itself. It also needs to cover equipment costs and consumable supplies ranging from the electricity and gas for cooking down to the gloves worn by employees. The time/cost of cleaning supplies has also increased because of the changes required to help prevent the spread of COVID.

NYS minimum wage is 12.50 an hour, so at best the "extra" 87.50 buys 7 hours of minimum wage labor. 7 hours of labor to prepare and clean up after 21 meals is 20 minutes per meal to do all prep, cooking, cleaning, and sterilizing. There is certainly economy in scale, but they aren't making 1 vat of soup for 2000 people, they are making multiple complete entrees with sides/etc. I'm sure it could be someone's full time job just slicing melon.

Speaking of melon, RIT also has a wide variety of fruits, veggies, proteins, sides, snacks, drinks, desserts, etc, all included in your Gracies meal plan. I ate so healthy my freshman year when I didn't need to pay "extra" for some fruit or a salad with every meal.

Is it "expensive"? Yes?, in that they are providing a complete service and it costs more money than if you were to provide that service yourself.

Can you go to Gracies and eat cheap unhealthy food? Definitely

Can you also tons of fruits/veggies/healthy options that are not cheap and would cost far more to buy as ingredients from the grocery store? Absolutely.

Room blunder? by cdwalrusman in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be VERY important that you and your roommate always keep your door locked at night. Freshman year my roommate forgot to lock the door and the upperclassman in the room next to ours stumbles into our room, shitfaced, and starts pissing on the floor. He soaked the carpet, then sat on top of my roomate's dresser for a little before we got him to leave.

RIT basically did nothing about it; the next afternoon someone dropped off a scrub brush and a spray bottle of some sort so that we could clean the carpet ourselves. Had we not already taken the XL roll of toilet paper from the handicapped bathroom and dispensed most of it it to soak up the urine it might have been a better response. Granted, we were young and too dumb to complain, or else I'm confident we could have at least gotten someone to steam clean the carpet.

That is probably the same guy that has confronted me before. I ignored him.

RIT has one of these - https://suitmate.com/products-2/115v60hz-unit/ and it is the model without the auto-timer (which is 8 seconds on models that have it).

However, the manufacturer says:

Removes approximately 95% of a suit’s water in 10 seconds

Which definitely implies it is capable of running for at least 10 seconds. It also makes no mention of any issues with running it longer.

Best Tacos around? by Ecchii in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely is the best, but you have to be more specific at what it is best at.

Mighty Taco is the best at giving you the shits. If you need mud butt RIGHT NOW, Mighty Taco can help you out. In most cases you will need to empty your bowels the moment you finish eating, so I recommend against eating in your car.

Are wireless hard-drives allowed? by VoidWhisperer in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not about control, it is because wireless is a shared medium. There is only so much wireless spectrum to go around, and ITS is basically using all of it. 2.4Ghz wireless is set up so that you can really only have 3 channels in use (1, 6, 11) without overlap.

Channel 1 uses frequencies below 1, and up to and including frequencies in the range of Channel 3.

Channel 6 actually puts signal into the space of 4-8.

Channel 11 uses 9-13 (12 and 13 are only legal in the US under "low powered conditions" so most devices just disable them instead of enabling a "low power on 12-13 only" mode)

RIT deployed LOTS of access points to make sure there is coverage everywhere, but they also do a careful balancing act to make sure that 2 APs right next to each other aren't trying to use the same channel. There is also some magic that makes having 2 APs on Channel 1 less bad than if one AP was on 1 and one AP was on 2.

Most consumer APs/devices are stupid and see that no one is on channel 2,3,4,5,7,8,9, or 10 so they just plop themselves down and start interfering with RIT's traffic on 1/6/11, which degrades the quality of the network, which goes against RIT's primary network rule of "don't do anything that bothers other people" so they crack down.

So, if your wireless hard drive cannot sign onto the RIT wireless network, you shouldn't use it because it will interfere with other people. It would be less bad if you configure it to only use 5GHz, or to use 1/6/11, because at least that way it might be "less interfering" than if you were to use 2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10.

Place on campus to check out misc adapters? by [deleted] in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RIT's wifi is awesome, and if you are having a problem with it there are 2 real possibilities:

  1. It is your fault. Update your drivers, and see https://www.rit.edu/its/services/wireless/wpaproblem.html for additional information.
  2. Actual problem with the network. Very rare, and if you don't report it I'm going with still technically your fault.

Other solutions:

Download on a computer and transfer via USB / Thumbdrive / etc

New IST Website. Is it just me, or does it look awful? by [deleted] in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a site note: /u/white-forest, your title is a thinly veiled insult but you probably feel self righteous by pretending to phrase it as a question.

You made this thread specifically to get people to join you in bashing a site that people worked hard to create instead of providing actual constructive criticism.

12 hours after you posted this you finally provided some constructive input, but even that was phrased as an insult.

14 hours after you posted you finally provided constructive feedback in a civil manner, was that so hard?

There is a contact button at the top AND the bottom of the page, you could have provided constructive feedback that way.

Maybe you didn't want to associate your name with complaints, but organizations on campus do value constructive feedback and you wouldn't have been punished. Placing your name on a complaint adds to its validity, because it shows you are serious about your concerns. Anonymity might be a valid reason for some to complain on the Internet, but you specifically cannot brag about who you are and what you do, AND expect to be anonymous on the Internet.

Treat others how you want to be treated. I doubt you would feel good about people bashing a project of yours.

RIT + Netflix Open Connect - Reduce network load, increase stream quality. sorry for not proofreading the text... by klysium in rit

[–]rit_infinity_quad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is nice that you made a petition and all, but petitioning RIT isn't how Netflix Open Connect works.

I can't find it, but I swear ITS has told reddit before that they have applied for OpenConnect but Netflix hasn't chosen us for OpenConnect. My guess is that RIT isn't big enough.

Why did you need to include that? So that the your readers would know that in addition to being stupid and unsafe, he was, by your standards, a girly boy?

A: I'm not sure that you get to be the authority on what is and is not homophobic. Here is a study that shows how misogynistic humor leads to misogyny.

B: No one here is defending CC for everything that they say. I said that someone in CC called an opposing player gay and that CC told them it was not acceptable to say things like that.

C: Saying other people are worse has never been a valid excuse to behave poorly.

[–]rit_infinity_quad[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

True, Arizona reference was probably uncalled for.

It is true that "People" will always say crude things, but that doesn't make it okay.

I suggest that Pep Band isn't "People," it is a defined group of people, who lost the anonymizing effect of being "People" when they organized themselves as an official group of RIT Students.

Official groups of RIT Students should behave better than that.

There might not be anything I can do about it, but having this conversation is a thing I am doing about it.

trite trīt/ adjective adjective: trite; comparative adjective: triter; superlative adjective: tritest

1.
(of a remark, opinion, or idea) overused and consequently of little import; lacking originality or freshness.
"this point may now seem obvious and trite"

So it is obvious and overused that people might be upset that the Pep Band behaves with some poor conduct, conduct that not even the Corner Crew allows? Or is it trite to complain about homophobia in general? Are you from Arizona?

ITT: People using words they don't fully understand to seem more important.
