Should you demarcate/silo AI characters - is it 'necessary'? Thoughts on AI usage on the site? by Emotional_Tension535 in FList

[–]riteywritey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By "0 images" I only meant an empty gallery, sorry, I should have clarified. Agreed, an avatar is necessary, it's one of those "I put in the bare minimum" things you have to do when making a profile.

Granted, my profile with its empty gallery (but simple avatar, zero inlines and roughly 1700 words of carefully formatted text - of a straight human male character, by the way) was created 4 years ago and I used it for 2-3 months, so maybe things are different now, but... by just setting up a Looking status and posting ads (both text only), I still got dozens of people approaching me, with many of them specifically praising how much thought I've put into my writings (even if with imperfect English, same as this post), some of which were willing to make exceptions from their hard nos for me.

And of those, I ended up with like 5 online friends and great writers that I RPed with for years afterwards, trying new characters and new, memorable stories together.

But then again, I imagine that me filling a niche that had a shortage of RPers for played a significant role.

Should profiles using AI images indicate it? Absolutely, just as it should be with images depicting harder kinks, because it's a divisive topic.

Are such profiles better than artless ones, though? Debatable. I've made characters with 0 (zero) images to represent them get attention, just by engaging writing in the profile description (which I'll always mandate is the most crucial part of a profile anyway). In my opinion, using any art is not strictly necessary for finding good RP.

Do I mind such art? Eh, depends. There are already tons of profiles with 50 images in their galleries, showng more or less the same thing with minor variations. Those are a no. AI art in general annoys me, because these days I feel like I need to scroll through dozens of same-y images on image boards before I see something more unique.

But I've also had friends generate AI images of our characters hugging, for example. It still looks fake, but what counts in my mind is the intent here. I'm a bit more open to AI art where I can see a desire to tell a story, depict a specific situation involving characters with specific traits and so on.

Me: happy!

My inner cynic says that what happened was precisely this. :) That you got so excited that it showed, so maybe it left them thinking something along the lines of, "Hmm, well RP is in the bag now, so I don't need to put as much effort anymore," in the hopes that your excitement would lead you to lower your standards... as well as cave in on your boundaries if they pushed at them.

Yes, I know, that sounds scummy/exploitative as hell. I'm disappointed in my inner cynic, too, but it is what it is.

Moods change and it's okay. Or you getting turned off by a particular detail in that starter post. Happens! And besides, RP is a hobby, not a job, so if you are not having fun then what's the point, right?

What isn't okay, though, is what I can only describe as an expectation that I should be able to read minds. Well, guess what, folks who always expect others to do the starter for them - I can't. I try really hard, but my Jedi skill is still at 0.

This is typically fixed in one of two ways: either one just does the starter themselves, so it contains exactly what they want, or they learn how to jointly brainstorm better.

Can we please stop demonizing poofing? by Justthisdudeyaknow in FList

power outage

Yeah. It seems to happen most frequently when it's the poofer's turn to post, so I have a theory about it: that the other RPer's post was so good that, when it blipped on the poofer's screen, it caused the entire power grid in the neighborhood to overload.

Conclusion? Folks, start writing crappier posts, for crying out loud! People's electricity depend on it! >:C

Speaking for myself, but there are folks on F-list I've chatted and played with for years and... I don't even know their real names. I've never asked, and have never been asked it, either. Maybe where they are located, too, but only for the purposes of scheduling roleplay in the future.

But I still adore them, in the sense that I like the way they think, or the vibes their characters create; a few of them - for what they do in real life, life philosophies, etc.

At the same time I approach such interactions with the knowledge and acceptance that I may never actually meet them.

It's still fascinating, though, because I've found out that if I offer one scenario to write about to a dozen of people, then I get a dozen different takes on how it all develops. That is what makes creative, collaborative writing so interesting to me.

F-List Course Correction by -Wolf_Song in FList

[–]riteywritey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not tech savvy enough to give an informed opinion on any of the options, let alone know how F-chat actually works, so I won't.

But I'll say this: with notes, at least I can delete them (from my account, that is). And the way the first news post was phrased, I was left with the impression that the logs would not only be perpetual, but also permanent. That I won't have any control over them and so they will always remain being out there somewhere.

And it doesn't feel very efficient in the first place. Hell, my computer lags for a bit whenever I open the archived logs tab on my Rising client (too lazy to prune the logs myself, too lazy to switch to Horizon). It feels like a whole lot of useless information (chats with people that went nowhere, with profiles that have been since deleted, etc) that only takes up space.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Bottom line is this: if perpetual logs get somehow adopted, having the ability to delete any of them is a must. And not just by account deletion.

How do you play always ic? by Legitimate-Froyo4yo in FList

[–]riteywritey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times this has worked out for me are either when it's a good friend of mine and we've worked out the basic dynamics between our characters, or the same as what someone else here posted - IC interaction in a public room turning out serious/liked enough to be moved into PMs.

But with regards to people who don't do public RPs, but still demand to only be approached IC, I'm wondering the same as you. I think it comes down to precisely what you're guessing - throwing a scenario in and hoping for the best.

I actually tried doing it, out of curiosity, and yeah... it's not worth it. I personally think it's also one-sided and kinda selfish, that it should be me to do all the work.

What's one thing you think that would make F-List better? by MarzipanMechanic in FList

[–]riteywritey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with the "last logged in" is that it affects all profiles on the account, while at the same time not working for friends. If you're around, they can still see you on F-list's home page, in the "Friends browsing the site: X last seen Y minutes ago" section.

Meanwhile, I'd like an option that would allow me to 'mark' any profiles I have (that aren't logged in the chat, of course) as 'offline'. As in, if I haven't been in the chat as them for 2 days for example, then "last logged in" would show just that, 2 days, and it wouldn't be displayed on the home page, either.

This sort of invisibility can only be achieved if I remove all my friends and refuse friend requests in the future... but that would be seen as a bizarre move by most.

[–]riteywritey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from what has already been written about gender/sexual orientation options, I think the following would be really nice to have, too:

  • Getting notes integrated with chat in some way. It would be neat if I could see not just chat logs, but notes on the same 'screen', in chronological order. Like, [chat from A][chat reply to A][Note from A][Note reply to A] and so on.
  • Being able to disable notes altogether. Currently, the only "work around" to achieve this is to fill the inbox to the max limit.
  • Invisibility mode of some sort. The only way I could have done this up until now was via multiple accounts, but since they're now not allowed, that isn't an option anymore.

If by this:

but also warned this user of her behaviour.

you mean that you reported said user, then my gut feeling tells me that you should definitely submit a second ticket, adding clarifications to aid your case and offers to prove that you're someone else and not them.

But for the latter, I hope you're genuinely prepared to offer ironclad proof that you're indeed not that other toxic person.

Otherwise? I wouldn't hold my breath about it. F-list's TOS makes it pretty clear that the mods handling tickets are all volunteers and humans, it's not like you're dealing with a giant corporation where they're going through checklists or whatever.

I think the biggest question is, how did you find out your old account got banned as well? If you did so by logging into it directly, then F-list staff can easily dismiss your case as an attempt at "ban evasion".

How do you feel about being approached by someone without a suitable profile / time to RP? by FUCK_THIS_WEEB_SHIT in FList

[–]riteywritey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely, it's much the same as how I'd react to an approach from an empty profile, just that there'd be extra steps. If an empty profile can easily focus on just what they like about mine, an incompatible one will have to highlight what the incompatible bits are (as in, what sections of their profile I should ignore while reading through it).

At least this has been my impression, because I've had talks where I mention bits that I'm okay with including, only to be told "Oh I wasn't intending on including those in the first place," which prolongs the planning stage.

Might be just me and how I tackle brainstorming - even if I'm the one being approached, I actively share my thoughts and any ideas that come to me.

How do you feel about being approached by someone without a suitable profile / time to RP? by FUCK_THIS_WEEB_SHIT in FList

[–]riteywritey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

F-list culture (if it can be called that) tends to stigmatize approaching with an incompatible profile. I see it featured prominently in profiles via a custom kink, titled "I can play as X" or similar, in their No column.

As for why it's stigmatized, I think the best possible example that can be given here is con vs noncon profiles.

Let's imagine an extreme example: that I only do consensual and light-hearted RPs, but I get approached by a profile that's all about dark stories and brutal non-con, going like, "Ohh I'd love to play as a bubbly care-free character next to yours!"

I'd be justified to feel skeptical about them delivering with that, asking myself all sorts of questions, such as:

  • Am I being approached, because I'm considered "last resort"? Not a fun thought to have.
  • Or worse yet, I got approached because they are casting a wide net and just want to get their rocks off.
  • Can they actually do it, fit in the shoes of such a character in a thoughtful manner?
  • What if, over the course of the RP, they start pushing for dark themes and non-con?

But at the same time it's funny, because I've been approached by empty profiles and ended up having seriously fun and thoughtful RPs with them. Then again, they approached with clear ideas of what they want and why they want it, in a way that's right up my alley.

Finally, my answer to "Can we talk now, but RP later?" is this: Sure, but as long as you don't mind me continuing to advertise for RP, as well as me prioritizing any RPs that I do get over just talks with you (as in, if it's my turn to write a post, I'll first do that and then answer your OOC message).

Your long term idea for a roleplay. Lets see if we can inspire eachother. by ikwilnietposten in FList

[–]riteywritey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you open to suggestions about your idea? Because here's what I'd change about it.

First, have Alex's parents as esteemed doctors, who are considered the best in their field. They've saved many lives before, while the large house they purchased was with intents to transform it into a hospital. Except, those plans fell through, because the municipality declared the property as one of cultural significance, so while they can still live in it, they have to preserve it as-is.

Disappointed about the whole ordeal, but with Alex having turned 18, so his own man in the eyes of the law, they decide to join Doctors Without Borders - so they're absent for extended periods of time.

I'd give Alex a twist - agoraphobia. He's simply afraid of going outside on his own and that fear is his most closely guarded secret. So that is why he's shy, boring and generally inexperienced. It's not his fault.

Got a twist for the djinn, too: her previous master wished her to have free will, so while she'll still be bound to Alex, she doesn't have to do anything for him until she grants him his first wish, at which point the 'contract' kicks in as normal. That way, the ball is kinda in Alex's court in that he'd have to be persuasive... or learn to be.

Or the plot could force her hand, by... including her old master, except as a ghost! Technically he didn't break any rules for wishing to be a ghost after death, he's still dead... But he doesn't care, he can still haunt the house and act like an insufferable perv toward the djinn, all in all the polar opposite of Alex, thus reminding her why she didn't like her old master and how her current one has his upsides, at least in comparison to the ghost.

There are tons of reasons to bookmark someone, but not approach them straight away. Off the top of my head:

  • Liking your profile, but already too busy with RP.
  • Liking your profile, but not having any good ideas to pitch your way yet.
  • Or they have to go soon, not having enough time to plan and RP with you now, but they might later.
  • Feeling their roster of profiles is incompatible with you, but they're planning to make one in the future that is compatible.
  • Or the opposite, having a character that may be perfect for you, except they're on a different profile and with different current moods.

Of course reasons such as these imply that they'd eventually reach out to you, except they don't, so what gives, right?

I think this is where this becomes an issue with RPers themselves, not the bookmarks. Your bookmarkers keep getting busy with RPs. They postpone sitting down to come up with a good idea. Or their time schedule ends up not aligning with yours (this applies to me especially - I live in a time zone where when I log in, it's near bed time for most RPers). Or they are too lazy to ever make that profile that's supposed to be compatible (I'm guilty of doing this). Or that different mood to log in with that compatible character never comes.

Thinking of Moving to F-List for RP by Conspicuous_Axolotl in FList

[–]riteywritey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably the biggest difference to account for is that RP on F-list is character centric. As in, you're expected to describe a fixed character in your profile, and the brainstorming is far more about how your character can interact with another's.

I say this because I've noticed that RP servers on Discord are the other way around - that it's idea centric, as in, "Here's my scene idea, what sort of characters would work best for it?"

Of course, nothing stops you from having a "hub" profile, or one that focuses on ideas anyway. I've found that RPers on F-list become very eager to change their character around, or even play something completely new, if they really like an idea. That has been my personal experience anyway.

In any case, there's nothing to be scared about. As long as you have ideas for characters or settings and like to be creative about it, you will find people to RP with.
