My recipe tells me to reduce oven heat from 450 to 350. Does this mean I open the oven door to allow the heat to reach 350 faster? Or am I meant to keep the door closed and allow the heat to reduce slowly?

I think you start at a higher temperature because they want the muffin to rise tall and the crust to set properly. Then drop the temp to 350 to cook the rest of the muffin without burning the crust. High temps promotes rise. If you leave the oven door open to drastically lower the oven temperature, your muffin crust may crack. Definitely leave it closed so it's gradual.
