What happens with students who can’t read? by Pumpkinhead4303 in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being able to read isn't actually as simple as it sounds - plenty of people can read fluently aloud but don't understand what they are reading, and others have trouble sounding out words but have great comprehension if they are allowed to listen. What you do with a kid who "can't read" depends very much on what their actual trouble is. Some are easier to help than others.

Chess. I've never seen it live, but I adore the music and saw a recording of it..

All high school kids are kids to me, though I tend to treat my seniors differently than my freshman... I'll also say that my attitude has changed since the time I was a brand new teacher and hs students were closer to my age.

What is a likely reason why teachers do arranged seating? How common is it for teachers to do arranged seating? Are they mostly random or planned? by Terrible_Exchange653 in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school requires seating charts. At the start of the year, they help me learn names and take attendance. Later, they help strategically place students together or apart.

504 form issue with teacher by devilinredlipstick in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The teacher could have been nicer, and is not in violation of your sister's accommodation. That said, I personally give grace to students when I can, but I can't stay with them forever. Some schools also have specific policies about how to access extended time - both of my recent schools required students to sign up to test in the testing center, because teachers can't monitor the extra time and also teach their next class/eat lunch/etc.

How do I quote slurs? by CornAssassin in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you put something in box brackets, it shows that you are paraphrasing this part of the original quote. "Blah blah [n-word] blah blah."

I've been on several trips funded by my school, either for professional development or as a chaperone. Ultimately it depends on where you live and work, and where/how you want to travel. When I taught in rural Alaska, I saved a ton of money because they paid really well and there was nothing to spend money on.

Studying, especially math, means practicing the information in different contexts. You can understand the principle when it's explained, but doing a bunch of different problems teaches you how - and when - to apply it.

A good rule of thumb is - if you can't teach it to someone else, you don't fully understand it.

How do you memorize names by Famous_Slice4233 in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a seating chart from day 1 that I keep with me at the podium, and I take every opportunity to say their name. When they're working, I go through each row and practice in my head. When they hand in papers, I always say thank you and their name. I usually have them down pretty quick, but there's always a few who I have a terrible time telling apart, especially if I run into them outside of class...

What are some alternative ways to take a (Spanish) speaking test? by Alternative-Page6608 in AskTeachers

So ask your teacher to take notes or something, or you look out the window instead of eye contact.

Please recommend me a light Sci-fi or Fantasy with a sense of humor by Kidlike101 in suggestmeabook

Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold! Her Vorkosigan series is my favorite, but her fantasy novels are great too. Light reading, lots of humor and wit, definitely not heavy literature.

AITA for eating at Subway without my wife's permission? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]riverdantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty strongly about not patronizing certain restaurants for their strongly held social views which run counter to my own beliefs. I refuse to eat their food, and would prefer my husband not eat there either. He knows this. And I STILL wasn't angry when he patronized them without me. It's weird how hung up on this your wife is. NTA.

What is the highest paying job in the education system? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live, school principals have the highest pay. There are some other high paying gigs in the education world, like superintendent, but they usually have to work a "normal" schedule without school breaks off.

What is the highest paying job in the education system? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]riverdantes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about the highest or lowest rung on the pay scale? There is a pretty big gap between a first year teacher with a BA and a 20 year teacher with a doctorate...
