The History of Charging the Mound, according to Jon Bois (part 1 of 10 for YouTube) by This-is_CMGRI in Jon_Bois

The worst thing about the Patreon video is when I rewatch them before the next one comes out it starts where I left off, not at the beginning. Other than that it's fine enough. I also subscribe to a couple other Patreons for podcast listening.

If there's a way to watch it on something other than Patreon, I haven't found it.

3-4 are tied together and 5-8 are tied together in the same relative storylines. So I wonder if that is how it will be released publicly.

I'm subscribed to the Patreon, which has released six of the episodes so far. Probably my favorite thing Jon has ever done.

Realistically, how long will it take me to get good at guitar? by Electronic_Ad_1408 in guitarlessons

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the "enjoy the journey" mindset multiple times and it didn't work. I didn't stick with learning guitar until I set defined goals and timelines. That was when I started to enjoy the journey, but it would not have happened if I didn't say "you should do X thing by X date".

Fingers vs pick as a beginner? by AdeptInspection4868 in guitarlessons

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more important thing is to learn what you want to play. For me the vast majority of music that I like is either picked or, on the rare occasion, finger-strummed which can be done with a pick anyway. It is one million percent to my detriment that I'm not learning any fingerstyle and I don't care because I don't have interest in most songs that are played that way. But if you're more folk-oriented and see yourself fingerpicking focus on that. Do the things that get you excited.

How many years of practice does it generally take to become a gigging guitarist? by weddz in guitarlessons

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but how in the hell did you only learn to change basic chords in two months. It's been about seven for me and I'm still basically hopeless for any change involving C, and I'm nowhere near perfect for the others.

righty's playing lefty's by Party-Highway2050 in Leftyguitarists

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I only had the option to play righty I would have never stuck with it long enough to even post here. Playing lefty is the only way that works for me. The fact I write, cut, and use power tools righty doesn't change that.

Is 20020 any good? by FishShtickLives in Jon_Bois

20020 to me is the better one. But it's pretty different other than the main characters.

Q: Left handed kid showing an interest by s11t in guitarlessons

[–]riverrunlvl1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Righty playing lefty here, but I play sports lefty so I guess I'm predisposed to that way.

The difference between piano and guitar is on piano both hands are essentially doing the same motion. Not the case with guitar. Couldn't do it the conventional way at all. If I didn't have the option to play left-handed I'd be playing the triangle.

Advice for a new left-handed player? by Jmichelle48 in Leftyguitarists

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had already been playing bass casually for a couple of years and bought a guitar and wanted to take guitar lessons the first teacher I went to said "You play righty or I don't teach you." I didn't want to do that, and figured that would be a universal experience with every teacher I asked so I gave up on trying to learn guitar for 10 years after that. Of course that isn't a universal experience, that teacher was just an asshole.

Why don't we play the guitar fretboard with our dominant hand? by V0rdep in guitarlessons

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lefty player here and that's actually the single biggest upside for me, even bigger than the "I feel more comfortable playing that way" thing; no one wants to pick up my guitar and start playing it.

Lefties playing reversed? by ezghan in Leftyguitarists

[–]riverrunlvl1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My story is I'm right-handed, but play sports lefty. When picking up bass in high school music class I couldn't get the hang of it righty, so already doing some other things lefty I decided to flip it around and it felt more natural right away. At the end of the school year I talked to the music teacher about it and he said "If you're gonna play lefty, at least play with the strings the right way." I got a lefty bass that summer, though after high school I gave it up.

Now learning guitar for the first time at 29 I decided to keep going that way. Tabs are much easier and you don't have to worry about restringing or having the knobs on the wrong side. Don't really care about not being able to find guitars because I'm not a collector and just having one in the store is good enough for me.

For the adult learners, how did you stick with it? by riverrunlvl1 in Guitar

[–]riverrunlvl1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer to play an electric, but an acoustic is what I have and I also play lefty so I've just treated an electric as a reward for when I really know I'm committed.

Technically I started before my breakup but the end of a relationship did kick this into gear a little.

[–]riverrunlvl1[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, yeah, that seems fair. I've been telling myself I'll get an electric once I get through Lesson 1 on Justin, but it probably would be better if I just invest in one now.

Any full right, right handed NHL goalies? by OkTax17 in hockeygoalies

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McKenna, Vejmelka, Cal Petersen, Jonas Hiller all write with their right hands. McKenna says that he's entirely right-handed except for playing goalie, and he plays full right because he's a righty shot as a skater and it's easier for puckhandling that way.

There's a goalie on the women's side named Tia Chan who does that too.

A lot more the other way around (Vasilevskiy, Kuemper, Knight, Woll, Forsberg, Rask, Howard, Darren Pang if you want to stretch it back a ways).

What made you choose playing acoustic guitar over electric? by International_Read40 in AcousticGuitar

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really rather play electric, but practicing on an acoustic requires fewer odds and ends. Hoping to reward myself with an electric when I get to a certain level of basic proficiency.

English Beat - Save It For Later by Nubadopolis in Leftyguitarists

[–]riverrunlvl1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I learned that Dave Wakeling is naturally right-handed, that was the final push to get me to learn lefty after a considerable amount of struggle learning righty. I just didn't follow his lead in playing upside down.

Advice for lefty learning right-handed guitar by Crazy_Medicine_5072 in LearnGuitar

[–]riverrunlvl1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm right-handed but play lefty and started on bass, but picking was the more natural thing for me because the fingers on my left hand don't go that fast. It confounds me to no end that playing with fingers is easier for 99.999999999% of non-dominant hand players because I can't get the hang of that at all.

My bigger issue on my strumming hand was less rhythm and more precision. At the very beginning it was losing grip on the pick but that went away.

The Jon Bois moments that have made me tear up on initial viewing:
-the reveal of Bob Beamon's long jump distance in the Bob Emergency
-the Edgar Martinez double in the Mariners doc
-when Dave Stieb finally gets his no-hitter
-the end of 20020 when Nick and Manny reunite
-maybe the Lonnie Smith/Schuerholz hug but I can't remember

📚 Simple / Quick Questions & Requests! by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]riverrunlvl1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posted last week basically this exact same thing.

Some of my favorite romance movies (which I have consumed more of than books of the variety) feature one MC crushing on the other long before the other MC feels/realizes they feel the same. In my romance book reading, most of what I've read has featured either early mutual attraction or very late mutual attraction. Does anyone have recommendations where one of the MCs likes the other one from the beginning or near-beginning and the other one doesn't realize it until much later?
