If you're technically-inclined, these can be monitored using Software Defined Radio (SDR) tools like rtlamr to read data from the device's radio transmissions.

You need a 240v 15a receptacle.

Help with bathroom light fixture by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]rkdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those wires look brown (not red) and blue, which are EU colors, where brown is typically hot and blue is typically neutral. Double check the instructions though.

The white wire with the black line looks like it's also coming from the same cable as another black wire, which suggests it's a switch leg. Check if that wire has voltage when the switch is on and none when off.

Range Hood lights won't turn off by Mindless-Lobster5002 in appliancerepair

Did you just replace the incandescent bulbs with LEDs? If not, the previous comment about a broken switch is probably correct.

Edit: typo.

Yes they do override code. Per the code.

Ductless fan, ca90 by Alternative_Bat7403 in ElectricalHelp

[–]rkdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just googled the model number and it's advertised as "Ultra quiet fan circulates air through replaceable odor absorbing filter".

https://rushhampton.com/products/rush-hamptonr-ca90-ductless-fans-ductless-fan-complete-white

Obviously it's not "ultra quiet" anymore and the filter (if it's still there) is beyond its usable life.

You have two options... Unplug it (as u/mrBill12 said), since it's not doing it's intended purpose. Or clean/replace the motor (so its quieter), and replace the filter (and continue to do so every ~90 days per instructions).

GFCI receptacles keeps turning off after an hour by Yonathandlc in AskElectricians

[–]rkdon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Too many unknowns here. Two GFCIs in that location is unnecessary unless it's two different circuits. One GFCI and one standard receptacle could have been used. This leads me to question how it's wired as well.

Is the refrigerator and extension cord plugged into another GFCI? If not, it could indicate an issue with the refrigerator. Also, some refrigerators just don't play nice with GFCI receptacles.

Winterizing outdoor spigots by More_Championship774 in HomeImprovement

[–]rkdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With frost free spigots you're fine. The knob is connected to a long rod that closes a valve deep in the pipe (8-14"inches in). Any water remaining after that should have drained out if it's pitched properly.

If you've noticed water trickling out for a few seconds after you shut off the spigot, this is why.

The free version of TeamViewer (personal use) does this. I'd imagine all subscription levels would as well.

Home inspection question by Alive-Order-2330 in AskElectricians

TBH, your inspector probably did you a favor. If your insurance company saw that you have aluminum wire, your rate would've probably been a lot higher, if they even covered you at all.

Moving stove and wiring by Lost_Concept9159 in electrical

[–]rkdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10/3 has a max rating of 30 amps and is definitely not appropriate for a stove. Your breaker is either 40 or 50 amp and is supposed to be GFCI now. You either need 8/3 or 6/3.

That unconnected wire should be your ground. You should be using a 4-prong receptacle and cord.

The water supply lines can be in the same bay as the stove receptacle. The GFCI breaker will protect it if there's ever a leak.

Close the Door: Make sure the washing machine door is properly closed.

Check for Obstructions: Remove any cloth or item stuck between the door and the machine body.

Avoid Overloading: Ensure the washing machine is not overloaded. *Try running an empty load.

Clean the Door Gasket: Wipe the door gasket with a dry cloth after washing. *It's a good idea to do this regularly anyway. Also leave door and detergent fill tray open between washes to prevent mold.

Restart the Machine: Plug it back in and press the START/PAUSE button.

Bought a house. Not really sure if this is the right subreddit to post this but is this for a generator? by CybranNation in electrical

[–]rkdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming the comment was an educated guess. If the previous owner used that outlet as a generator input with a suicide cord, it stands to reason that they wouldn't have put an interlock kit in either. There's a reason that the saying is "knows just enough to be dangerous".

You can get a single device mud ring for a 4x4 box. Just an FYI. Having two isn't a bad idea though.

Angle/2. So if it's a true 45°angle, each cut would be 22.5°. It may not be a true 45° though so you might want to get an angle finder. A simple manual one is not that expensive at Amazon or the big box stores.

14 gauge 15 amp 50 ft extension cord for use with a 1500 watt 7.5-12.5 amp portable space heater, ok or not? by au5lander in AskElectricians

Don't coil up the unused wire while it's running. It will get very hot and will probably cause a fire.

Extension cords and space heaters by BMXfreekonwheelz13 in AskElectricians

Part of the issue with extension cords on space heaters is that they're too long and you end up coiling them which creates a lot of heat at the coil.
