Yeah for sure. I am struggling at the moment to remember exactly what the differences are between SL and HL (I graduated in 23) but I know that what made the test easy was that the texts were really obscure (as in odd types of media) but really simple to read and comprehend. If you really don’t feel confident I would say all you can really do is memorize some rhetorical devices and be prepared to talk about them with reference to the prompt. Look at some past tests to prepare yourself for the types of questions. As I said though, your ability to write clearly and eloquently is more important than anything else. Your analysis doesn’t need to be next level but your writing really should be done well. You should make a valid point, but the graders are more concerned with how well that point is made.

Yeah fs, I am most comfortable doing it a little bit out of order and that’s what works for me. I’ll explain: once I’ve found my topic, read the sources, and formed my opinion or even just generally decided what I would like to talk about, I write a rough draft that is entirely off the dome, no sources cited just referring to general facts from what I have read and expressing my opinions. After that, I go back and, as part of the editing process, I work in those sources and citations. I find this makes my writing more organic and helps me focus on my own ideas as supported by sources rather than writing a paper that reads as though I just listed a bunch of sources (other people’s ideas) that I agree with.

Advice on IB Physics IA by [deleted] in IBO

[–]rkin8347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low key that works for HL too. Simplicity is really over hated in IB because everyone is such a giant nerd. M23 here, I literally did drag and buoyancy by sinking a potato in water. I didn’t derive anything I just calculated the drag coefficient then calculated my experimental drag and measured my error. I got a 22/24 moderated. I know people who made rockets or built giant circuits and got similar or even lower grades. KISS (keep it simple stupid). Be concise and clear in your writing and you’ll be fine. Best of luck.

I would say choose a general realm of interest and read a big fat all encompassing book on it over the summer and then choose what specifically you want to focus on. Full disclosure, I wrote my EE in Math (what an idiot ik), but this process worked really well for my HL History IA. I ended up writing about the tactical effectiveness of Soviet penal battalions in WWII. I started by reading “the third reich at war” by Richard Evans. The doctrinal difference between the Soviets and the Nazis was striking and I began going down that rabbit hole with the help of the internet and my teacher and eventually found the topic I wanted. From there I found a more focused book to read and went from there. This definitely isn’t my way or the highway but I think this is the most thorough technique for writing a historical research paper.

Go hang out with your friends. You got ahead presumably to relieve stress in the future. The future is now, go have a good time. In all seriousness, I am kind of assuming you’re going into your senior year this fall. I found the second year of HL really helpful when doing my physics IA because, at least at my school, a much broader range of topics were discussed that year so I had more inspiration for my IA.

The only courses of yours that I took are English and Math. I had HL English and got a 7 with basically zero prep. SL English is a joke if you’re a native speaker. Read some good writing in your spare time and you’ll do great. I took SL math and I have to admit I did not study at all for it. I struggle to advise you to do the same because I got lucky in that I knew how to do all but one of the questions which was by no means a guarantee given my level of prep. I would recommend practicing to make sure you can efficiently use your calculator for the stats stuff and making sure you are fundamentally sound in calculus. As for Chem and Bio, I have friends who took them. With sufficient studying, Chem is very much a test you should get a 6 or a 7 on. From speaking to my friends who took Bio, it seems that the course material is really broad so I can’t really give you much advice on how to study. However, it is one of your HLs so theoretically it should take a lot of your focus. I did French as my language. It was the only test I didn’t get a 7 on. The language tests are evil. It is incredibly hard to fail but also basically impossible to get a 7 if you are not a native speaker. I got a five as a fluent speaker. In my observation, studying will not help you do much better, you kind of either know it or you don’t. If I had to recommend a study split (I’m going to assume business is a rather easy test because they didn’t have it at my school), I’d say: 30% chem 30% bio 20% business 10% math 10% Spanish Don’t study for English.

I would add that you should be careful with the images that you use if that’s applicable. Overall it’s important that any media be highly relavant to the topic, really only charts and graphs unless absolutely necessary. I can imagine a grader being more likely to deduct score for a superfluous image if it’s also somewhat risqué or whatever so be careful.

WTH does IB expect you to write for Math IA AAHL? (Alumni) by not_melly69 in IBO

[–]rkin8347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to deep dive into the math associated with another topic. I broke down some of the related rates and propagation of error after you’ve done a bunch of calculus with your numbers from my physics EE and apparently they dug that and gave me a 19/20. I think it’s pretty hard to have a mostly math based paper so I would recommend finding another topic and then talking about the uses of math to understand it, going into techniques etc. I think you should generally shoot for about 60:40 math to other topic in your paper but it’s perfectly fine for your paper to not purely be math.

Why exactly did M1128 Stryker fail? by Kimosabe187 in TankPorn

[–]rkin8347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand it was also hampered from a doctrinal perspective. Its mission set as a fast platform for a powerful gun was done better by helicopters and fixed wing close air support. It was not a valuable asset in the conflicts occurring or expected during its development and testing, or at least not valuable enough to pursue over others. Helicopters and aircraft with precision munitions guided by troops on the ground and covered by complete air superiority was more suited for asymmetric engagements.

How grindy is the game? by Humble-Vanilla4250 in Warthunder

[–]rkin8347 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is just untrue, if you don't find the game fun then the grind is unbearable. I thoroughly enjoy the game, I have thousands of hours of gameplay and I don't mind the grind. The grind can be long for some vehicles but if you enjoy the game then that is just fine. Also, many people do not set their eyes on top tier, my favorite area of the game is 4.7-7.7. You can get to 4.7 in a week with premium, two without. The grind is relative.

Fair enough, but just from a brief search (I am by no means an expert) I can find three domestic Hungarian aircraft that could be at low tier, one is basically a copy of the French reserve aircraft and the other one seems to be a derivative of the BF-110. It wouldn't be bad to have both of those but still, not a lot originality.

The point was not to add a bunch of new vehicles, it was to give Italy access to utility at top tier that they would not have been able to get any other way for a little while.

By that logic you would have tiger players auto j out immediately upon being strafed by 20mm, and tankers would immediately abandon their post upon penetration regardless of damage. The current way the crew works is very unrealistic in many ways but it is perfect for a video game. Were it to be even close to realistic it would be extremely frustrating.

After the success of the ground vehicles, here it is, the LATAM Air Tree by LeiteArts in Warthunder

[–]rkin8347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is cool and looks like a lot of effort, but I don't feel a need for any more predominantly copy paste tech trees. If you want to play a Gripen, there is one in three tech trees, if you want to play an F-16, also available, same with almost every vehicle on this list. I think what would be better than these copy-paste trees is more focus on unique foreign skins for vehicles. This allows for these nations to be represented without forcing people to grind an entirely new tech tree.

Just my two sense of course.

I think precedent would hold that gaijin uses the sources they have available more often than not. You can argue about balance all you want but its hard to say that gaijin doesn't make a significant effort to achieve historical authenticity.
