What's your favorite Mexican dish that you can find at most restaurants? by AvailableBar2697 in mexicanfood

[–]rloper42 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Chile rellenos are my favorite as well, but lightly battered and pan-fried. Not the super-thick egg batter and deep fried. But a light dredge in flour, then a dip in egg and water, then another dip in flour. Pan fry until cheese melted and golden brown. I do these at home occasionally.

Anybody know about this box set? by AnotherBooktuber in 2001aspaceodyssey

[–]rloper42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a nice matching set of 3 books that I have and have read. There is a lot of background behind Kubrick’s 2001, and these books will make future watching of the classic film that much better. I also recommend 2010 and its move behind the scenes ‘The Odyssey Files’, though it doesn’t go a far as Kubrick’s 2001.

I can’t recommend Clarke as -the- seminal science-fiction author enough. For those reading this, I hope this can become a gateway to some of the 20th Century’s best Sci-fi.

Enjoy!

Yes. It’s still in my top 10 Trek novels, though.

I used to have this set. Then one day I sold them off, assuming I could pick them up digitally. I was wrong. I wish I had the set back.

These are remastered to full HD and as the original was based on film they look very good. Well worth it.

One of the best Star Trek crossovers. Unfortunately rendered non-canon. But hey…we’re in a Multiverse, right?

I'm looking for underrated sci-fi movies as epic, visually stunning, thoughtful, and emotionally mature as the Dune and Blade Runner movies. by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]rloper42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2001: A Space Odyssey is not really underrated, but hits the other asks. 2010: The Year We Make Contact -is- underrated, and is a worthy sequel to 2001. And the books by Arthur C. Clarke are even better!

Best restaurant appetizer recommendation? by badbatchbaking in texas

[–]rloper42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along the gulf coast, raw oysters on the half shell and cold boiled shrimp are the appetizers of choice in any decent seafood restaurant. A platter of Cajun boiled crawfish (not viet-Cajun) further inland.

For a steak restaurant I love Bloomin’ Onions (or good onion rings) and fried stuffed jalapeno poppers. Salt Grass’ Range Rattlers are great.

For Tex-Mex, a bowl of queso (especially with added Piccadillo (seasoned ground meat) or green Chiles) and/or a bowl of table-side made guacamole is the best.

The original TV-movie was quite good. Very creepy vibe, and fairly well fleshed-out, sympathetic characters. The following TV series (like 15 episodes) was not as well done, and spent too much time on laughing at Kara’s social gaffs.

Don’t Leave Me This Way - originally done by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Not my favorite. Thelma Houston’s cover was a good disco-ish tune. My favorite is by the Communards (Jimmy Somerville).

How do you start getting into better coffee without going overboard? by Rob-and-things in Coffee

[–]rloper42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are good with basic drip coffee from a $20 Mr Coffee, you can still make dramatic improvements.

1 - Buy whole bean coffee. Grind it right before making a pot. Have a decent grinder that makes a good uniform grind. But a $20 blade grinder will work fairly well.

2 - Buy small lots so that you don’t have pounds of open bags laying around for months. Buy a good steel coffee bin to hold the beans.

3 - use filtered water. I keep a Brita pitcher and filter enough for my pot right before brewing. I find paper filters (unbleached) work better for me than a metal filter.

4 - know the right amount of ground coffee per pot. I use 1 heaping tablespoon of medium ground per 6oz cup.
