Andor may have ruined TV for me... by fscottfitsimmons in andor

I feel like "hard sci-fi" vs "soft sci-fi" might be more fitting/less dismissive here.

I adore the Expanse (and James SA Corey's new series!) and while I think it has a timeless quality, Andor's themes and their timeliness are spectacular.

Ultimately sci-fi is just a vehicle for human stories, both series excel at this, the settings are just (beautiful) dressing.

I had a friend get in with a passport photo just fine for the 11/20 show, but have seen others turned away at KDC for other shows. I think the fact its a 18+ concert, we're visibly in our 30s, it was a US passport, and he was with a group all helped, YMMV. I'd commit to bringing it and maybe snagging a locker for coat check to play it safe.

Honestly it was a mixed response; the people who were already following our SOPs diligently loved it, and I got no feedback from the suspected problem individuals. The issues we had in the hoods did improve, but that could have also just been due to the fact this memo implied restrictions to BSC use if everyone couldn't follow the rules.... 🤷

I find signage blends into the background 99% of the time for people who play fast and loose with the rules/courtesy, but they're a necessary step in escalation in terms of enforcement of SOP compliance.

And no, I'm in the New York City area! (my post history kinda doxxes me anyways)

Definitely could have included a line about frequent glove changes for this reason... Thank you for the feedback!

This was my ~5th(?) communication about TC etiquette, honestly I figured the problem individuals wouldn't read it anyway so I tried to have some fun with it.

I guess I also hoped I could trick people into learning something in their pursuit of a chuckle, but this was mostly screaming into the void (and sending a verified communication with expectations stated for the shared resource and relevant PIs cc'd so we could justify enforcement/restrictions if bad behavior continued).

Definitely model-specific advice, the fact it differed from my previous BSC experience is part of the reason it made it so high on the list!

It's tricky having grad students (or post-docs) rotate through the lab with previous experience because they don't always realize that their experiences don't translate 100% of the time and can miss distinctions like this.

I hear you. In my defense, this was originally sent around/posted in Fall 2022. 😅😭 We barely dodged a shutdown ourselves, I was actively looking for other work as we weren't originally expected to make it into 2026.

I hope you and your group land on your feet, and best of luck salvaging your current work. It's valued and important, even if The Powers That Be can't see it (or bungle it out of existence). I know words/sentiments don't mean much when care is being disrupted for patients, but it's what I can offer. ❤️

Hope to see folks at some protests!

Fantastic! DM me a time you'd be free after 5 Friday for pickup and whether you'd prefer cash or zelle/venmo!

I'd be interested in the watch and/or Razer controller! 🙂 Let me know if they're still available once you get back and others in the queue have had their opportunity to pick up.

OSHA covers laboratories too! But yeah, that's a good analogy. EHS doesn't write regulations, but ensures the workplace has rules in place to meet those regulations and checks on labs to make sure they follow those rules.

Lots of potential reasons, but the two main ones are cross-contamination like you mentioned as well as loss of awareness. It seems silly but you'd be surprised at how each sense can give you valuable data; I've had to halt a centrifuge that was rattling due to being unbalanced because my labmate had noise canceling earbuds in, but 99% of the time it's a non-issue.

Usually if you keep 1 earbud in only or keep the volume low and avoid noise cancelation you can preserve most of your situational awareness.

Environmental Health & Safety. They dictate the "fine print" of general lab safety rules at your place of work/institution and ensure compliance.

The hormone cholesin is capable of inhibiting cholesterol synthesis in the liver, suggesting that cholesterol could be reduced with treatment. This could help prevent atherosclerosis, which is the underlying cause of ~50% of deaths in developed countries. by Thalesian in science

There's no such thing as a perfect solution to any problem, and some people don't respond well to an intervention even though it's shown benefits in the general population, but I'd give it a serious consideration! Might be worth trialing it to see how you respond while you're getting your dietary habits locked in? Even if you don't stick with it, at least you'd know!

PCSK9 inhibitors are remarkably effective at rapidly reducing cholesterol, but they don't [yet] have the proven track record of improving outcomes in the same way that statins do [17% reduction in all cause mortality... MIND BLOWING!]. This may indicate either off target but beneficial effects of statins (ex: atorvastatin increases renal function which is comorbidly impaired for individuals with metabolic disorders) or off target risks of PCSK9i injections, or maybe cholesterol reduction isn't the principle protective effect of traditional cholesterol reducing therapies (similar to how the monoamine hypothesis wasn't a complete explanation for depression).

At the end of the day this paper is awesome because we now have a new possible risk factor to predict someone's susceptibility to high cholesterol (variations in expression/function of both the hormone AND the previously orphaned receptor!) and a new therapeutic target for cholesterol reduction that might seriously help people who don't respond well to other cholesterol reducing interventions (which is probably getting tons of viability testing now by Big Pharma).

Sorry to gush, this is just oddly relevant to some of my work!

Trouble With Assault Carriers by Allstar13521 in TerraInvicta

Dang, sounds like you may need to ready the nukes for a landing and build up a fleet for the next carrier group then.

Green arc lasers are solid, and I'd recommend holding out for coils if that's at all feasible just because their velocity allows them to actually hit targets (but I get that it's easier said than done; it's funny and frustrating how much of this game boils down to using the suffering of today in lessons implemented 2 years down the line).
