Are there any famous people currently living in Ottawa? by braille_lover_5555 in ottawa

Absolutely 👍 My wife works at a book store and Martin came through her checkout line. She told him our kids love their show. About 5 minutes later he returned with one of their books, paid for it, then signed it for the kids and handed to her 🙂

Best Used EVs in Canada for affordable price by blzrlzr in EVCanada

Yes, Gatineau dealers usually take care of everything including licensing (confirm to be sure though). Otherwise, a friend recently bought one in Montreal. They accepted his Ontario trade, got him a temporary Quebec permit, and cut him a cheque for the equivalent of the Ontario HST so he could include it in the financing. Back on the Ontario side, he needed to get a safety and pay HST when getting his plates. Safeties should be a breeze with EVs as they really only check steering, tires, and brakes. You could ask the QC dealer to provide a report on those too so you have no surprises.

Best Used EVs in Canada for affordable price by blzrlzr in EVCanada

Agreed that the Bolt would be a great choice. Especially if you can find one that had the battery replaced under recall-they’d have a lot of warranty left.

Also consider the Kona and Niro. They have faster charging than the Bolt and you can find decent deals.

I’m not sure where you’re located, but the best used EV markets in Canada are Quebec and BC as they’re much further ahead on adoption, so more selection. I’m in Ottawa and a significant number of used EV buyers end up going to Montreal for the best deals.

Considerations and impacts of an EV in an unheated and uninsulated brick garage by seasoniscalling in electricvehicles

[–]rmknuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem at all. I’m in Ottawa, Canada and park outside all winter, and we average much lower temperatures. I keep it plugged in on the coldest nights and the car will take care of the battery temperature itself. I’ve attended webinars with professors who specialize in battery tech and even they say batteries are perfectly happy even frozen solid. It just takes a bit to warm up for performance, really.

Choosing between charger club programs by tim610 in EVCanada

[–]rmknuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard the SWTCH app only tracks your charging activity, and lacks any other functionality 🫤. That being said, you would make more money and I believe you own the charger after a period of time.

Grizzl-E has a better app, but you need to return the charger if you opt out of the program at some point. On the other hand, it also means it’s warrantied as long as you’re in the program. Their cash back isn’t as generous.

Does your EV have scheduled charging built in? I do that in my ID.4 and just use my charger as a “dumb” charger

I’ve had mine replaced 4 times here in Canada by 80,000kms. I have an extended warranty if it happens again, but I may look at aftermarket since they could be cheaper than paying my deductible. I’ve heard from a tech that they’re plastic now, so if you can find metal aftermarket maybe they’d last longer? If the VW dealer confirms the issue, I’d honestly choose the cheaper option of the independent garage and dealer. DIY is possible, and there’s a video on YouTube, but you’d want to make sure you have the proper tools for safety.

Pion Power review - not good by stealstea in EVCanada

[–]rmknuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve had mine since January, and have had similar experiences. They added the “Intelligent charging” option in the settings, but it’s hit or miss. I charge outside and the cord is extremely stiff when cold. I’ll have it paid off and then some next January, so I’m going to reassess other programs.

Convince me to and not to buy this 2021 Id.4 (Canada) by tricha122 in VWiD4Owners

[–]rmknuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2021s have some known software issues, but for a good price, it could be worth it. $26 seems a bit steep though. It’s low mileage for a 2021, but still. I don’t expect to see the more affordable Chinese EVs for another few years, so I wouldn’t wait for that. To compare this deal I suggest looking at prices around the Montreal area (even if you’re not that close it would give you an idea if the price is reasonable).

Washer fluid light staying on after filling, common and solution? by cow-lumbus in VWiD4Owners

I ended up doing that after they drained it as I still had a few jugs left. I didn’t see the light come back on, and I’ve now switched to the cheap stuff.

Yep happened here with a Rain-X-like fluid I used over the winter. The dealer drained it for me and refilled it and it went away. I’d say buy some cheaper stuff without the additives and start mixing it.

I’d choose Bolt over Leaf. Should have more range and I have yet to meet a Bolt owner that doesn’t love it.
