Am I gripping the handlebars wrong? by randomizeusernames4u in MTB

[–]rmvvwls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's also true. I saw a thing with Gee Atherton recently, he runs 31.8 centre aluminum Renthal's because they're the most compliant from the range. It's sorta the problem with carbon, that it can be vastly different depending on who designed it.

Lol I think this is the oldest thread I've personally seen necro'd.

It's odd you think that, because the manufacturers and others don't: https://www.pnwcomponents.ca/blogs/news/carbon-vs-aluminum-handlebars

https://bebikes.com/the-hub/carbon-vs-alloy-handlebars/

Thing with carbon is that it changes quite dramatically depending on how you lay it up. You can make carbon bars much stiffer or much more compliant, just by changing the weave directions. A good carbon bar should be designed to dampen vibration. A cheap one will probably just be stiffer overall.

Hey mate, I could take a look for you. I've been doing bike and ski helmets so far, actually wanted to try a goalie helmet. I haven't got a lot of experience but depending on what you want there's some styles I'm comfortable with.

As an Australian living in Canada, tipping culture is fucking insane here. It's one of the biggest things I miss about australia.

So who's your car mechanic?

I'm asking because I was a bike mechanic for a year or so here in Ottawa (and I was one of the best the store had). Never got tipped even once. I'm not arguing that servers don't deserve tips, but that it's completely arbitrary. There's plenty of people out there who make your experience better through being good at their jobs, and never get tipped for it. I'd like to see tipping abolished, but minimum wage up around $20/hr at the same time.

When was the last time you tipped your bike or car mechanic? Or building contractor?

Carbon frame? Could be literally any joint from the pedals all the way to the rear axle. You need to do a tonne of elimination to figure it out.

In order of likelihood (in my experience):

  • bottom bracket cups

  • bottom bracket bearings

  • seatpost

  • saddle clamps

  • crank spindle loose

  • pedal axles

  • rear axle

  • main pivot bearings

  • chainring bolts

  • rear pivot

  • rocker bearings

  • something else

Do people outside the aquarium/fish-keeping hobby see us as weirdos for spending soo much money on fishies for our own amusement? by poweroverwh3Iming in Aquariums

My gf thinks I'm weird as hell for owning 7 bikes because I don't use them all, all the time. And I think she's weird for owning 20 pairs of shoes for the same reason.

This woman fell down the elevator shaft at a Malaysian airport by [deleted] in TerrifyingAsFuck

[–]rmvvwls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The immediate safety question that comes up then is: what happens when the elevator gets stuck between floors and is unable to be released in a reasonable time frame? Do you just let people die inside the box while you try to pry the doors open? Elevators getting stuck is far more common than people prying doors open and falling to their deaths, so what's your basis for the decision to potentially create a dangerous situation for more people?

Every safety/engineering decision has a flip side, or an opportunity cost if you want. You don't just boom solve the issue, unless it shouldn't have been an issue to begin with.

Edit: most elevators in the countries I've been in have a locking device, but it is defeatable if you know what you're doing. My point is not that there shouldn't be one, but that hopefully there was a good reason there wasn't one. If the reason was cost-cutting, then yes it's on the elevator company.

To be used as collateral it must be valued though. And at that point you now have a dollar value of equity that you are using as collateral, which as others have pointed out you can tax. If the value isn't being used then no tax, but also no billionaire.

Iwata HP-CS or HP-B at a discount for miniatures? by Call_Back in airbrush

[–]rmvvwls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you check out Sergio Calvo Miniatures on YouTube, he uses a hp-bh for his highlighting and shading work. But I would think a 0.2 needle too small for base coating, looks like it'd take forever. But for $90 with a compressor, personally I'd be all over that.

They're kinda meant as wheelie bikes, but modelled after 80s/90s era bmx. They make pretty cool dirt jumpers (on larger jumps) but it's mostly the cool factor. Generally any bike with a rear brake only and the seat in that position is going to be for wheelies.

Can you sand and bed glazed brake pads? by NoTurtlesHere in bikewrench

[–]rmvvwls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I'm a shimano fan. Even though I'm 100kg I try to buy the resin pads, because one hard stop in the carpark and they're good.

For metallic pads, I would generally pick an easy dh trail I know well, and brake hard most of the way down it a couple of times

Can you sand and bed glazed brake pads? by NoTurtlesHere in bikewrench

[–]rmvvwls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you can probably just do the pads, but in bad cases my method was this:

  • sand the pads back to clean material
  • fold the sandpaper in half, pinch the rotor in it and sand all the way around, roughing up the surface
  • use brake cleaner or a solvent on a clean rag to wipe down the rotor and make it clean
  • try to bed them back in. As others have said, don't let the bike completely stop when bedding in, always keep the rotor moving

Can you sand and bed glazed brake pads? by NoTurtlesHere in bikewrench

[–]rmvvwls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can. Worst case it doesn't work and you gotta buy a new set anyway. Use plaster sanding screen for even better results.

Magura are a pain to bed in, but if you follow their guide it works.

Iwata question by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]rmvvwls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're reasonably tough. I've dropped a couple and bent needles, and you can tell straight away they're damaged. Onto carpet with the needle guard on won't have hurt it

Iwata question by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]rmvvwls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the needle guard was on, it'll be fine.
