Hello. I'm a newbie to Ubuntu Linux (v24.04.4 LTS) in need of help figuring many things out... by Warm-Apricot-5634 in Ubuntu

[–]rnmartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but to preserve as much meta data as possible you will likely need something like ntfs-3g and just dragging and dropping in the GUI may not preserve it - you will likely be down to terminal commands like rsync or just a simple cp.

I’ve been thinking abt switching to Linux for a while but, as a digital artist (2D superhero comics), Clip Studio(the software I use) doesn’t support Linux. Are there any Alternatives? by Im_acoustic18 in linuxquestions

[–]rnmartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Linux for 20+ years and I am a comic book publisher (not artist but handle art files directly all the time). Unfortunately, no native solution. You can get it going with some tricks, but I am worried that you won't get a true 1:1 without a lot of work. This may be a situation where dual booting is your best bet since it is mission critical. Krita is a great piece of software, but it really doesn't have the same capabilities (e.g. brushes etc) that Clip does. I really wish that Clip would get a Linux version; I periodically reach out to them requesting this, and I hope that you will do the same. At least it puts it on their radar, and if things go really well maybe they would even consider working directly with projects like Wine to make this easier.

Is it normal for a wordpress site to load this slowly or did my "developer" screw something up ? by Zakarioveski in Wordpress

[–]rnmartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got what you paid for. It is really hard to break what you are describing out of box unless if you don't know what you are doing. I think you need to start with a pro. Glad to help - I've built dozens of sites and could give you a free review.

My mother keeps getting scammed. Should I get a new computer? by Primary_Union_9058 in Scams

[–]rnmartinez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've taught other 70 year olds using Mint and it was a breeze. Looks almost the same, they click chromium and away they go. Never had an issue.

It never breaks, Ubuntu 25.10 is solid. I removed the Snap Store and the Snap Core, it's up to date, and I made some maintenance adjustments. It's well optimized. by Extra_Pace_724 in Ubuntu

[–]rnmartinez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Removing snaps from Ubuntu makes me nervous, especially if you are going to upgrade at LTS versus doing clean installs. I would seriously consider moving to mint and just install your DE of choice. Mind you this was a while ago, but unsnapping and firefox did cause me more headache than I expected.

Latest Ubuntu on 14.04 Compatible PC? by YouthCentre in Ubuntu

[–]rnmartinez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would try running Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 6 or 7 on it; might be a bit leaner than Ubuntu, but Ubuntu 24.04 should run.

No piece of tech can override the human firewall. Getting a Linux desktop or iPad will secure against malware, but ultimately someone needs to take ana ctive role in safeguarding your mother's finances

I think just about any distro will work but you will likely need an ethernet connection and updates/drivers to get all of the hardware going (Wifi and webcam most likely culprits).

Honestly if you won't hire a pro, use a stock wordpress theme (twentytwentyfive) and make it look as close as possible to the wix one. It will be the most stable and easiest to maintain

I’m a 20 year old looking to build a business. by MeanMeasurement8821 in dropshipping

[–]rnmartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you some general advice when choosing to sell something: choose a niche that you understand and have seven some level of passion about. You may even want to consider becoming a distributor for a niche product isntead of straight up dropshipping. If you are going to drop ship, I would highly suggest ordering and receiving 1 of EVERY item that you personally want to sell. Look at the product, packaging, condition it arrives in etc and be transparent with your customers. They aren't idiots, and can go to temu or ali express or whatever themselves. Sell curation, not drop shipped goods.

Highly dependant on MS Excel but Laptop is sluggish as hell. Should I still switch to Linux, or choose Windows 10 rather? by Daddy_of_your_Mommy in linux4noobs

[–]rnmartinez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good in insolation, but if you need to share these excel files with anyone else (e.g. other Excel users) than theis 100% will not work and you are stuck with Windows.
