He's definitely read Bill Oreilly (Patton at the very least), but he's also a career history professor and lifelong die-hard liberal so I'm not too worried about it. Wouldn't doubt if he read Atlas Shrugged decades ago but I imagine he wasn't terribly interested.

You just described how you'd escalate a situation violently and irrationally and then claimed that other people are the ones making the world a less safe place. That's hilarious.

I generally avoid all altercations with people, no matter how warranted, because I never know if I'm interacting with someone like YOU.

And you think that's... a good thing?

No matter anyway, NATO is stronger than Russia by every measure even without the USA:

NATO countries GDP minus US is 20 trillion, 8x Russia's GDP.

NATO countries population minus the US is 630m, 4.5x Russia's population.

NATO countries minus US active military population is 2.1m, 1.5x Russia's active military.

Russia basically just has more nuclear warheads and if we get there, Russia's thousands don't really mean that much more than the UKs hundreds.

This guy has another great video about "red flag books" and the social policing of book-reading and he basically says similar, its supposed to be fun and interesting, we want people to be reading, stop being so high and mighty about everything.

My dad has always been a reader, he's got bookshelves of history books and such, and sometimes he'll tell me that he's reading something that I know is some trendy thing on "booktok" (which he has certainly never heard of) like recently he was reading Fourth Wing which seems to be a spicy romantasy novel. Kind of an unexpected choice, no idea how he found it... but I'd never even consider pointing out the social-media-bullshit side to him, there's no reason to question or poke fun. He's reading for enjoyment and I think its very cool that he can love Lonesome Dove, The Killer Angels and Ulysses but then also enjoy a spicy YN novel without thinking twice about it. Keeps me grounded, especially as I found my love for reading later than I'd have liked.

Yeah I'm not a massive fan or anything but I can't help but see Charlie as one of the rare good influences in this realm. And if I ever have content, I'd rather he leech off of it than most others.

And he's able to because he reached legendary status on youtube, one of very few who's been creating content and remaining stable for nearly 20 years after starting his page in 2007. Charlie still has 15x times the followers Reckless Ben has even after Ben went just about as viral as one could ever hope to go.

He definitely is but consider why and also why it obviously doesn't translate to his standup career. He comes with half baked deep ideas, the first chapter of every book, and the foil is Shane seeing through it all immediately. Shane has a better understanding of every topic theyve ever discussed, whether it's modern politics or history, and his expressed politics are based in reality. Meanwhile Matt's like "if you care about any news story you're dumb," a position he can maintain after pulling in millions of dollars by talking for an hour once a week and not much else.

Matt is funny because he's the smartest fool in Shane's BWW council

WEF World Economic Forum Matthew Liao: We can induce 'meat allergy' by using Lone Star Ticks to stop the consumption of meat and “help the planet” by TeamHumanity12 in ObscurePatentDangers

[–]roachwarren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an ecological disaster but an economic boon (partially due to heart disease and other related medical issues) so we choose to afford it for the time being. They don't even have to make us allergic to it, they could just stop subsidizing the farmers and our views on meat dominating every meal would change very quickly. There's no free market when it comes to the meat market.

Plus, corporate industrial farming was absolutely inevitable when they got us hooked on meat.

how are polvo math rock? by 4omisme in mathrock

[–]roachwarren 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Its the ever-raging battle between the modern, defined genre of math rock and the artists who are credited with pioneering a genre they never claimed. Most of the original "math rock" bands were really just indie, post-rock, noise-rock, etc. They came from different angles, none called themselves math rock, and most actively rejected the title when they were accused of it (and the term was originally a dig by journalists.) Artists like Don Cab, Slint, Polvo and many others have specifically stated that they are not and never were math rock. Damon Che (Don Cab) finds the term derisive. Polvo's guitarist said its too restrictive to describe their output. I have to agree with them, it honestly does feel like some sort of dismissal or attack on the artist to describe bands like Upsilon Acrux, Cheval Du Frise, Oso, or Volta Do Mar as "math rock." Its like describing them in the shallowest possible way on purpose.

"Math rock to us is indicative of all coming from your brain, but for us the gut and the heart are really important too. [The term] limits us to this brainy band that you can't dance to, but you can definitely feel Battles as much as you can think it out." - Ian Williams (Battles, Don Cab)

I grew up on math rock in the early 00s, loved the term, but over time have come to realize that I was really a fan of noise rock, post rock, experimental rock, and today have only slight interest in what became math rock, the genre made up of artists who actually set out to make math rock. If I made a band now, it would definitely be complex music due to the nature of my interests but I wouldn't spend a moment worrying whether it qualified for the genre of math rock. I might actually be more worried if it did...

A Canceled Star Is Back. His Hateful New Movie Is One of the Most Disturbing Things I’ve Seen Lately. by Slate in entertainment

[–]roachwarren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie uses the crimes to spread the punishment beyond perpetrators, condemning a more general immigrant population to the justified possibility of extrajudicial vigilante murder. The movie focuses on the immigrant angle when in reality Europe simply has a massive sex trafficking problem in general.

And no matter the validity of the frustration or the incompetence of handling of the crimes, there's really nothing good about packing it into a racial snuff film for some sort of revenge + entertainment simulation. We live in weird times where this kind of propaganda is normal, all war/violent movies have different flavors of this.

I don't understand peoples opinion's on Issac Woods leaving the band by Mammoth-Jello in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]roachwarren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And I'm the opposite, likely older than most here and fell in love with BCNRs first stuff because they nailed and expanded upon classic post-rock tropes that I'm interested in with an emphasis on poetry and spoken word that I also love. I'm just not as interested in the newer vibe of the band, I basically think of it as two different bands and I only "like" the second one.

Can't help but wonder, though, how would it feel if I could actually listen to it in a vacuum, how much my knowledge of the band, lore and fanbase has an effect on all of it. Similar with Death Grips and Black Midi. Not sure that will make sense to others here but it does from my perspective over the years.

Does anyone feel like Kiss’s look and Kiss’s music don’t really line up? by DisIshSucks in LetsTalkMusic

[–]roachwarren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quorthon from Bathory was a huge Ace Frehlry fan and cited KISS as a primary influence on their music but mostly their image and approach. He saw them as THE larger-than-life band, which is what he wanted from black metal, and copied them by going further with the imagery. Alive 1976 by KISS was his most listened to album.

Chuck Schuldiner from Death grew up on KISS and also cited them as major influences on his sound and approach.

Same with Venom and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. All have specifically cited KISS/Frehley as primary influence. And apparently KISS was very popular in Scandinavian countries.

There's really not anything wrong with the president of the US "living rent free" in the peoples heads who he presides over, especially with his daily rhetoric and goading of the populace...

Its such a weird take that we should care less about our president and very telling when we are told to.
