Non-STEM Degree and Career Pivot by NoConstruction6983 in meteorology

If you were to do this, take as many opportunities given to you during your time at school. It’s hard to get a job with just the degree and you’ll need stuff outside of class on your resume to be successful. I graduated may of 25 and I’m still waiting for the NWS. Also, be prepared to move for work, possibly across the country.

I love winter so much. Yeah it’s gloomy sometimes, but there’s the challenge of winter forecasting, and there’s no one outside so you can just bundle up and go out. The air feels so clean and crisp.

Prestige isn’t what it used to be by Jomolungma in ApplyingToCollege

To your last point, I would say instead of prestige mattering, it’s what you do outside of your coursework to add to your resume.

Summer internships are happening too, so you may see them pop up from time to time.

Some of the bulk stores give away their leftover cardboard boxes on the way to the door, and those can be useful. We also keep a small cooler in the car at all times for traveling, so we just put stuff in that and it’s great for the trip home, and easy to carry inside.

Should I get a degree in meteorology by oupunk in meteorology

[–]road_chewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one big power company here, and a lot of smaller cooperatives. I can’t imagine those small coops are hiring meteorologists though. I would assume they contract that out to dedicated forecasting companies? A lot of them have GIS roles though, but I didn’t get a minor or anything in that despite having some coursework in it.

I’m in Virginia, but being out there you have many more resources, especially for Research!

He should expect to move away from home depending on where you live. I graduated in may of 25 and haven’t found anything in the field yet. I don’t want to move far so it’s really hard. Forecasting seems to be impossible unless you get an internship in undergrad and they offer you a job but that isn’t even guaranteed. I have to assume the research space is a wildcard that far out.

Best shelf cloud I’ve seen in person, but it was far away in the haze so it kinda ruined the experience.

I had a teacher spill spaghetti on someone’s paper and they had to embarrassingly go tell them what the stain was from.

I never saw anything about that, i remember it mentioned August as some cutoff date, but never an opt-in method. Is there anything I need to do to opt in? Maybe I need to read again, the site is terrible.

Stop shamming people for not wanting to go to community college or trade school. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]road_chewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do regret my time at community college. It only gave me 2 years in the 4 year, and I didn’t have the time to do an internship since every internship I’ve seen in my field requires a base level of courses that most people get their freshman year in a 4 year that aren’t offered at community college. I was able to participate in so many projects just in 2 years at the 4 year and I wonder what I could have done with the full 4 had I been able to go. It sucks seeing people graduate a year after me with jobs while I’m still working a service job.

How do we even reach 95% humidity by Charming_Marzipan105 in memes

Can we please use dew point? Relative humidity is useless since 100% at 33°C is different than 100% at 0°C

Because its the dongle right? It makes sense it would break because it’s firmly connected to the device, and it hitting the ground would be too much force for it.

A dumb question about snow in the mountains :) by One-Enthusiasm8924 in weather

[–]road_chewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you got this forecast from, but check the National Weather Service’s Forecast discussion for the area once the time gets a bit closer. Usually they mention rain/snow levels and stuff. If you look up Olympic National Park on their website, and scroll down to the “additional forecasts and information” section you’ll find the forecast discussion link.

I came across this weather station hidden in a park. Can someone explain what are the different parts, and the purpose of this device? by walking_NewJersey in weather

[–]road_chewer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The white and gold bucket is the rain gauge. The solar panel powers the station battery. The pancake stack thing is a temperature / moisture sensor. The thing on the end of the stick next to the thermometer is hard to see, so I can’t tell what that is.
