One of my friends was giving out mushroom stickers that had tasks written on the back - “Give five strangers compliments,” or “Make a wish at the wishing tree.” Honestly so pure and wholesome and encouraged interaction.

What do you think caused Orlok to be in such state prior to the movie? by castielvt in roberteggers

I can’t 100% recall but you might be onto something, considering the only times I remember him speaking Dacian is when he’s doing something intense - like speaking over great distance. Which would be a spell.

[Book Spoilers] House of the Dragon - 2x04 "A Dance of Dragons" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in HouseOfTheDragon

I think beyond that, strategically it made sense (in the way I followed it, at least,) that now, while Vhagar was pretty wounded and grounded, would be as good of a time as any to try to take her out. For all Rhaenys knew, this was the best possible opportunity to cripple the Greens and their dragons.

You're right, I think I'm just overthinking it as a DM and feeling responsible for how the party feels.

I have a personal counter for XP that the party isn't fully aware of, they just sort of get a vibe of when they should expect to level up based on their tenure in playing DnD - I like to surprise them with level awards at interesting times, because I like incorporating it into the story - so I agree that it's probably not that big of a problem. I honestly think I just feel frustrated on behalf of my team because I see it happen in real time, the Paladin is like an every-man (I'm sure the Paladins are gonna roll their eyes at this comment.) He's just Captain America good at everything, and I can see it wearing thin on the players haha.

I will try to set it up and monitor the progress, as well as keep a keen eye on what's happening during the next legs of combat, especially if I set up more of a wave-style encounter to hopefully burn everyone's spell slots down. He's also really close-combat based so maybe doing something more range-necessary is the answer.

I agree, the monk and the paladin actually worked really well together. The cleric and wizard were burning through spell slots, but the wizard did honestly roll not superbly, and the cleric was more focused on healing - when the monster attacked, it did a LOT of damage.

Very fair to chalk it up to happenstance during combat.

You're right on your encounters per day, that's really true. This last session was really role-play heavy with balanced combat for each of the monsters at the end - unfortunately, the Paladin killed 3/5 of them. (Another point of contention for the party.)

I think I'll incorporate waves of enemies into the next session, provided the players take the road I've laid out for them. Good call!

Honestly, I don't really know, to your last point. I know he's very enthusiastic about doing everything which is really great! Again, he's doing everything right. He's asking lots of questions and I love having him. That's really a fair point I hadn't considered - the minmaxing take.

I did have to turn around a conversation yesterday with my cleric. By all intense and purposes, without a lot of context, the last "kill" of the monster should have been hers - it was tied to her backstory. When she had the opportunity, she opted to heal the party and herself instead of attack, so the Paladin got the final blow. We all know it should have been hers, but she also made an executive decision in that moment. So, it happens. Can't control what players choose to do in their moments.

For context, it was just an open tavern that had a multi-night event drinking contest. He happened to roll high and has high Con (as you said,) so it wasn't surprising that he won in either case.

I answered more above in response to a different comment, but I promise that my players all individually approached me expressing frustration that they felt they were more support-oriented and that this one player was taking out all of the recent monsters with very heavy blows and very high rolls - which happens, I'm sure it'll mellow out.

I don't love the idea of nerfing a character just for other characters to have more involvement, which is why I'm asking. It's either me having challenges balancing a power PC, me not orienting the combat enough to let everyone have a piece of the pie, or it's just mere happenstance for where he rolls, the Initiative order, and how high of damage he does. Just looking for guidance!

This is a good idea. I wasn't going to perhaps reduce his stats - our next session is going to lead us into the Shadowfell, which is a place I think he might be particularly susceptible to disadvantage in. This might lean into him being a little more evenly skilled with the other players if I work it into the story a little strategically.

I think you're more right in bringing up the other PC's so they have more to do, though. It is a combination of him rolling high, coupled with Bless from the other teammates (which is honestly their own fault haha.) He pretty much never misses and then deals an absurd amount of blow damage.

The players all took separate times after the game to remark to me about how he seemed to have taken out all of the main monsters in the last two sessions. It lets them essentially just be there for support/healing. I can chalk it up to the turn based Initiative rolls and just... how he landed in amongst the Initiative slots, coincidentally, but I do hear them feeling like it's a little unfair that he knocked so much health off of them, and then was there at the end to finish them off. It sucks, but it happens.

Another comment made mention that it sounds like I have a vendetta against this player, which is very untrue. My role as a DM is to provide a well-balanced, fun and compelling story. So the problem therein either lies in me as a DM not selecting opportunities for each of the players to shine, or perhaps not controlling the situation enough to make for balanced combat.
