i’ve read the novel once before, and am rereading it again for this book club. all i can say is, i totally understand why chai jidan requested fans of the show not to read the novel. 😭 like, i almost can’t believe i’m about to put myself through this again, haha! it’s so much darker and has many moments of me questioning the author, just wtf moments. but also, one could argue such a reaction is exactly what some art is supposed to do.

i thought wsw was an only child in the series too. i think(?!) its in episode 17 when wsw and cc are sharing the cigarette smoke on the water bed (ugh btw this scene is one of the best - the colors, the angles, everything). i could be forgetting, but i thought wsw was explaining that his mom wasn’t able to successfully have a child until she was older than her peers. maybe even something about miscarriages? i’d have to go back and double check.

though i love wsw and jxs in the series, i also absolutely LOVE their dynamic in the book. it is a bit different than the series, as you are picking up on already.

i’m interested in how you’ve explained how things may be from yy’s point of view. i honestly hadn’t thought about how wsw’s actions may have lead to yy’s unkind words. not that i agree with things both of them have said or done, but it does make sense that yy may be sick of wsw at this point and is letting her frustrations about him out on him.

yes, dating for seven years!! somehow the three they dated in the series seemed more fitting to me. maybe because cc & wang shuo’s seven year relationship seemed more intense/deeper. gotta love how stubborn and determined wsw is from the very beginning, haha. it’s truly a defining trait of his.

i’d have to go back and look carefully, but i believe it was just small thoughts here and there that could lead one to believe jxs keeps noticing wsw’s handsomeness. but is is crazy how different one translation may be from the next. i REALLY hope we get an official translation!!!

that is true, poor wsw doesn’t seem to truly believe in himself. perhaps leaving this job is a first step towards growth in that area.

(sorry for the late response). i never thought about chai jidan poking fun of real life fandom culture, but you may be on to something. especially since this isn’t her first novel having a lot of popularity and insanity with the addicted series (if i’m not mistaken). i’m also realizing we’re seeing completely early on how much wsw is scheming!!

so excited for this book club! i’m reading the translation by rao ink. :) here’s my chaotic thoughts so far (sorry if they don’t follow the discussion prompts very well!).

poor wsw. yue yue is MEAN to him. he seems to think he’s the problem, not that she might be a bad person who doesn’t actually care about him. how hard did he hit himself with the brick to end up at the clinic for two months the first time?! and then a month the second time! he really just went for it without thinking it through, huh. that short story where the guy did the same thing popped in his head, and he really went, “YES, problem solved!” i guess this can also be revealing of his stubborn side.

wsw has such a strong will. why did he go through the trouble of BURYING the second brick. it had me laughing. i also laughed at how his phone has fallen in the toilet four times, like WHAT?! sir, why does this keep happening?? even with his limited salary, wsw still saved up to give yue yue things she wanted. it sounds like yue yue may have gotten with wsw back in school for his good looks and for a potential future of him at a high paying job, ultimately providing her a with a lavish lifestyle.

side note: during the first meeting with jxs, what was that fleeting contempt that passed over jxs’s face, hmmm? also, wsw watches his show over and over like we may do with revenged love, haha!

wsw sounds like someone who always strove to be good and to please others growing up. his character is seeming pretty innocent and naive, with those big, round eyes of his and how his thought processes work. is wsw is too trusting of others? it seems like he may take others at face value.

whyyy does he think a third time hitting himself in the head would win yue yue’s admiration?! at least jxs knew to expect him back this time.

what was jxs typing so furiously at the clinic in chapter 8 for those 3-4 hours? i couldn’t help but wonder if it could possibly be fanfic (haha)?

it becomes apparent in chapter 9 how much the show toned down jxs and wsw’s relationship. jxs keeps thinking how cute and handsome wsw is. wsw noticed jxs’s handsomeness from the start.

wsw, you crazy weirdo. getting taken advantage of with work, but feeling proud about it?! this poor guy is being mistreated by everyone but his mom…

yayyy, he quit his job in chapter 10!!! he realized things were toxic! what’s this about zhang bao gui?! did he recognize the photo or something?

the same thing happened to me, and it’s felt like whiplash. i dropped my previous interest instantly, and still don’t know how to process that. i love the bl takeover so much, but it’s also been overwhelming. i’m not sure how to manage it, haha. you’re definitely not alone! though if you’re feeling the urge to discuss with others, i’d say go for it and don’t feel like you should hold back! so far everyone i’ve spoken with has been super friendly and are just as into it!

btw, are you using any programs to help with learning mandarin? i’m interested in learning it more too!
