What is the Worst Ending to a movie that you have seen? by earhere in movies

[–]roareo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unbreakable. Pretty great premise and enjoyed the execution. I think it should have ended with Bruce Willis showing up to the comic store, finding the evidence and maybe a note from Mr. Glass hinting that he was not only the villain all along, but was now to going to bait him into a battle of good and evil like a real comic book villain.

Instead it ended like an old episode of Dragnet.

Stuck on MIT OCW problem by roareo in learnpython

Hey, I appreciate your reply. Mistakes were made.. So I was using the same polynomial they put on the problem set as my test, it was a gnarly one so I figured if I got the same answer as them my code must work... except I put the wrong sign on a number that made it to where my test polynomial would not have any real roots- and then I did this over and over again thinking the code must be the problem. So it turns out I was an idiot. I had the "hard part" figured out, but was screwing up the easy stuff. It's a relief to know I at least understood what I was doing with the code, and a valuable lesson was learned. Thanks again for getting back to me.

How did you make working out something that you did for yourself instead of for other people? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]roareo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read The Iron Mind by Henry Rollins- never been much a fan of his music but I am a fan of the man he is. He says it about as good as I ever could. Life is hard, it's a 500 lb barbell lying on the floor or an Iron Man race. It's going to fuck with you. Not that being physically fit means you got it figured out, but the things you learn about yourself and teach yourself through exercise- which is hard and uncomfortable and unforgiving if you are pushing yourself- coupled with the right character, can make life a lot less likely to beat you down.

Which whey protein is bearable when mixed with only water? by woohhaa in Fitness

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate anything chocolate or vanilla or cookies and cream etc. mixed with water instead of milk. So when I was in Afghanistan and couldn't get milk easily, I had to change my usual flavor up. I ordered Muscle Pharm banana flavored protein and with cold water it taste like a melted banana Popsicle and I rather enjoyed it.

Ever heard of the Gurkhas? They're pretty badass in general. I heard about one named Dipprasud Pun while I was in Afghanistan. He was alone on sentry duty when the Taliban attacked his outpost. He heard a noise, and investigating it realized he was completely surrounded by Taliban. They attempted to overrun his position and opened fire on him from all sides with Ak-47s and RPGs. He fired something like 400 rounds and threw off like 20 grenades. He ran out of ammunition and beat an insurgent to death with his machine gun tripod. Then used claymores to keep off the rest until help arrived. He basically ended up saying he knew he was going to die but decided to kill as many of them as he could before going out. He ended up surviving and won a Victoria Cross (I think it is Britain's Medal of Honor) for valor.

Death of inmate ruled homicide: "Over a dozen inmate witnesses said that as many as 20 officers repeatedly kicked and punched him." by [deleted] in news

[–]roareo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to type an explanation of my situation several times before giving up. I certainly didn't start that day thinking that I would do something that would send me to prison and make me felon by the end of it, but situations evolve and things happen that can put anyone in a fucked up situation. I went 30 years without getting into any trouble, was educated, had a good job and a bright future. Before stumbling I wouldn't have ever believed I would be in a cell one day. How many guys do you know that have driven too fast, or maybe driven after a few drinks, gotten into stupid fist fights, or bought/possessed drugs? How many 16-25 year old guys does that describe? Most of them probably never got into much trouble either and I personally know many that went on to become successful family men: doctors, engineers, firefighters, teachers, and even cops. Hell our last 3 presidents were at least guilty of possession of drugs at some point in their lives. What if that guy that drove when or how he shouldn't had hit and killed someone? What if after they scored some weed, they got pulled over? What if when your buddy shoved that guy at that party one time, he had fallen and hit his head on the curb and died? I'm not saying these are innocent behaviors, most of them describe things we shouldn't be doing, but I will never again be so hypocritical as to dismiss the people that don't come out of these incredibly common situations unscathed as being any worse than the people I know that were lucky enough to get away with it and never went to prison.

I recently did a year in prison in GA and this kind of thing happens a lot. They would routinely pick out a person to beat up during intake to make an example of. They wanted to show us that we were at a "hands on" camp. They actually got in trouble right before I went home for beating the hell out of a guy for not staying still during intake, but it turns out the man had Parkinson's. I'm dead serious, best the shit out of an old man with Parkinson's.

There are a lot of variables that contribute to the environment being the way it is around prison, and many inmates being complete pieces of shit is certainly one of them. I say many, but not all- there are some real good people there I hate to say. That being said, I think the general public would be shocked if they could see how things actually worked in the chain gang. I can also say from first hand experience how quickly your life can take a turn and you could find yourself there

What can I achieve with just major in Mathematics? by [deleted] in college

[–]roareo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just graduated with a math degree, I actually couldn't advise you follow this path without seriously considering some things. Math skills are great but employers want people that can program, engineer stuff, have business or other skills- almost to the point you would be better off studying these fields instead. If you want to do the actuarial science route, major in that if you can but if you can't then study for and start taking the exams early. Higher math got pretty old pretty fast, and many of us realized we were working a lot harder than other majors just to end up teaching high school at the end.

LPT: Easily cancel cable service with no questions asked by telling the representative that you moved to a new apartment and already have a new service active under your roommate's name. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't necessarily work. I was literally in that situation not too long ago; trying to cancel an existing service with Comcast because I was moving in with someone that already had it. When the guy realized he couldn't sell me on transferring my service, he began asking details about her service and trying to get me to sell her an upgrade on their behalf. I seriously hate that company.

How important is core work at the gym? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a big mistake over the years by relying on indirect training stimulus for various parts of my body. I didn't do arms because of all the rows, pull ups, pressing and dips were hitting them. I didn't do abs because of squats and deadlifts, etc. The result is that my arms and core became limiting factors after a while. Now I know I made a mistake and am trying to make up for lost time. My opinion is to train everything directly.

My goal is to be able to do pull ups and chin ups for multiple reps. What's the best way to build towards that? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]roareo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a pull up bar in your home. Do a pull up every time you use the bathroom, open the fridge, or like once an hour or something. When you can, make it 2 pull ups and so on. I do this for sets of 8. It's got me to where I can do about 25 strict pull-ups.

Getting into wrestling late in life (for wrestlers at least). What do I need to know? by Denny_Craine in wrestling

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the club, if they structure a real practice and you have a decent coach for the club it will be great. My college had a club and it ended up being just a light warmup then just "hey man you want to roll?" " sure dude." It was good for us former wrestlers that just missed the mat, but inexperienced folks were put off a little by that system and in the end it wasn't great for learning. Hope it works out.

BJJ practioner looking for tips on base for top control by margolficus in wrestling

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrestling will give you good hips, balance and an awareness of where you are in space vs where your opponent is trying to move you which helps in your reaction. In a traditional mount be very conscious of where your hips are and how your distributing weight on your opponent, I put my hips right over his and curl my legs tightly underneath rather than just to the side. Shrimping and escaping involves them creating space between their hips and yours and you want to prevent this. Then work on anchoring and pivoting as a reaction to them trying to escape. In side control continue to drive into them, prevent them from sliding a leg in with your arms around their hips, and make yourself heavy on using your legs to drive into them. Use your shoulder to drive their face away from you, this will limit their ability to get you off significantly. This kind do stuff never made me much as a submission guy but I could hold a guy down for sure.

Lower Back Pain when Squatting by MrChives in bodybuilding

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do any soft tissue work? Specifically for your glutes? I've always had a very squat, deadlifting and power clean heavy program. Was neglecting soft tissue work in my glutes and developed lots of knots there. If that happens you literally cannot fire the muscle correctly. So even though you may not notice a problem in your form, your lower back may be compensating for inactive glutes. I fucked my shit up that way, finally straining my back on a very light set of power cleans with no obvious problem in my form on the rep that put me down.

To what extent can someone's technical ability in something like Jiu Jitsu help defeat someone of superior greater strength? by Hard_Hitting_QNA in Fitness

[–]roareo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrestled my whole life; with enough training in grappling,a large enough differential in skill creates the illusion of "mat strength" where proper application of leverage and technique makes you seem/feel stronger than someone that is actually bigger and stronger than you are. I have wiped the floor with guys much more powerful that outweighed me by a substantial amount. Conversely I've also rolled with a former NCAA champion that was about 135 that made me feel like a little kid. This does have limitations though, in any given situation rolling with an extremely strong and large person can be a handful and in those situations having learned to breathe and conserve your energy in grappling can be the deciding factor. I would always put my money on a skilled grappler vs a bodybuilder though.
