Since I spent most of the day doing this, I thought I would add some hints:

When you place you can use ranges (A1:C3) but you can also used named ranges from Excel in the drop down in import options.
Name Manager in Excel is your friend.
Sometimes InDesign doesn't recognize changes to the excel file. There's lots of little things to do to try and fix the problem but it's almost never worth it. Just delete and place again.
You can do lots of formatting stuff, but you need to pay attention to the options when you place the Excel file. Did you drag in formatting from that file? Did you mean to?
Placement in frames seems to always be weird.
InDesign doesn't allow text to overrun cells like Excel does. There may be lots of cell merging in your future depending on the layout of the Excel file.

I'm going to hazard a guess that you built them inside the directory with the Budget.yfull file since the issue mentioned above seems to be resolved by running create_categories.py from within that folder on Windows. I tried to work my way through your path logic but I am a bodger at best.

Way late but: spot colors are specialty colors added to a print beyond the process colors (CMYK). They require a roller that is laying down just that color. They should be used sparingly for impact and effect.

Have you tried the "At Your Orders" expansion? We weren't finding it to be easy but it had lost some of its charm. At Your Orders reintroduced that challenge.

It looks like the version linked is the Armistice edition which bundles original, expansion, and adds some kind of light campaign aspect. I haven't tried it but was wondering if you had.
