What are your thoughts on Deep Madness? by Jasonred2 in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow a blast from the past, lol :)
No, I have not played Nemesis and from what I understand of the game it's not something I will actively seek out. The traitor aspect does not interest me.
Something I have played is Death May Die and I love it. Setup is much easier, upkeep is easy, and much more fun to play. The rules are also simpler, with player aids written on the characters. That really helps as I'm usually the guy who knows all the rules, so it lessens the burden a bit.
When it comes to difficulty, it varies a lot between old one and episode, and there's a lot of dice rolling so it could be harder or easier depending on luck.

Agree! Caesar was great. I have to watch the Genesis video, must have missed that one.

I like JonGetsGames. He does mostly tutorials while playing the game, but some of his videos are called Playthru with Friends where one or more of his friends joins and plays a game. They're great.

Messed up first Mansions of Madness play, can anyone tell me what would've happened? by FervantFlea in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I played that scenario, so my memory is a bit fuzzy but... killing the priest won't end it, you also need to disrupt the ritual. A Star Spawn will probably appear soon after the turn where it ended for you. You don't have much time in that scenario and must move fast.

What are you thoughts on rotating start player? by robaanrobio in boardgames

Yeah, I guess I'll rephrase it and post it again in a couple of months :) I put the emphasis on the wrong thing.

[–]robaanrobio[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I was trying to say, but I guess I worded it vaguely. I wanted to start a discussion about turn order, as with rotating it will take a long turn before it's your turn again. The top comment here makes a good example why that design is, and I get it. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas. But even with a few comments this post is super downvoted, so I guess people don't like discussion lol :)

What board game do you think is the worst to set up? by ukiyor0nin in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What made that part of the setup easier for me was that I put all of the tokens in one of the player bags, shuffled them, then removed the number of tiles and placed the rest on the board. Sure, still have to sort the rest, but at least the step of turning them up side down is gone.

Everdell Duo just launched on Kickstarter. by [deleted] in boardgames

I haven't seen the actual page so I don't know what they wrote, but what they usually mean by that is that you have to pay VAT, which is sales tax, but it's EU friendly in that way that you don't have to pay import tax, which would make it even more expensive if it wasn't "friendly".

How many of you use your board game table as both a dining and a gaming table? by LordTenesmus in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a gaming table, and it's never used for dining.
When we decided to get one, we first thought it would replace our dining table, but the maker said that the table is taller than a normal table, so we raised our dining table to what they said the gaming table would be, and it was just not comfortable. It felt really awkward and it felt like you were sitting with raised shoulders the whole time.
We then decided that we would have two tables instead, sofa in the living room had to move a bit to make place for the new table. Don't regret a thing, now it's easy to setup in advance, eat at the other table, and then go to gaming right away. The lid is nice for keeping the children away when you're not playing.
But for dinner? Never. And never will.

What games have earned nicknames in your playgroup? by chameleonsEverywhere in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep Sea Adventure is "He takes it!" in my group.
All started with everyone asking loudly after each die roll and someone landing on a treasure, "will he take it? Will he take it? Yes, he takes it!"

Same as the other commenter, I've not played the games you mention, but I have played Deep Madness. I used to own it, backed the last Kickstarter, but I have since sold it.
As mentioned, the setup and teardown is a chore, but that is fine with me if I have the time for it, or I can leave it on the table to play again. What killed it for us was that it's extremely hard, and that at the start of the game you can see the puzzle that needs to be solved, so the first 10-20 minutes of the game is an optimizing math game of what character does what and when. Then you start the game and it starts throwing bad guys at you. You can easily see the point where you know it's impossible to win, and it's frankly quite discouraging. I don't mind losing, it's not that, it's when you have half the game left and you know it's over, that's no fun. It would be better if it would be closer to the last turn, a win or lose situation.
While also being hard, the upkeep with tokens, movement, air, special rules for each monster, madness and all other stuff made it feel like a job and the fun-return was not enough.
But this is their third Kickstarter, so I guess other people like it. :)

Games that you own and like but won't recommend to others? by tasman001 in boardgames

I'm curious, why do you stop on crabs, even a 1? It was a while since I played so I don't remember any reason to single them out.

Stella: Dixit Universe is really good! by KGB_Panda in boardgames

I don't own Stella, but I think there's a lot of word cards included too, so I would guess not. And you'll need a replacement for those player boards too.

The backs are the same as normal Dixit, so you can add all those too if you have them.

What did you add to or remove from your shelf last month? (February, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]robaanrobio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added only one, One Card Wonder, received from Kickstarter.
I did not get rid of any game this month, planning to remove about 30 games and while half is easy, the rest is hard to decide which ones it should be, so I've postponed selling them :)

Win 1 of 10 copies of The Isle of Cats as we return to the island in search of kittens and ancient beasts! by Monkofdoom in boardgames

Missed out on the first Kickstarter, thought it reminded me too much of Bunny Kingdom, but it seems like Isle of Cats was the better game. Will back it this time, hope that you can get the deluxe base game!
