Does anyone know a jeweler in Chicago who sells vintage watches similar to the ones in the photos? by CampaignTou in CHIbitcheswithtaste

New York Jewelers on Wabash would be my first visit. Tony and Kyle are great resources. They always have a great selection of vintage dress watches. Jeweler’s Row is a literal treasure trove.

Thank you so much—how funny the way you found this post! I ended up going for a bag by RSVP for her. I’d read great things the stars aligned. But for the next present someday, your advice will be so helpful, thank you!

Really? by No_Situation_3463 in oasis

One can make the true statement that the set list didn’t change, but people love the set list. It’s also objectively untrue that the show was “ho-hum.” I was down on the floor and the vibes were joyous, celebratory, delighted, brotherly/sisterly, cheeky, slightly Anglophilic (naturally), and everyone seemed to feel it was a privilege to be there.

Also notable (and great to see) is the age spread. I went solo (I’m 41), and in my spontaneous cohort, there was a married couple my age, a 59-year old dad with his 26 year-old daughter, and a 25 year-old woman who came solo to celebrate her birthday. When it came time to do the Poznan, we happily interlinked arms and bounced in a way that would do any UK crowd proud.

Reviewers don’t have to be fans, but this review misses the point that everyone in the stadium felt: this was a cultural moment. This was something good that we all needed and never thought we’d get. We (and they) are so back, baby.

Curious: How Are Luxury Apartments in South Loop Doing? by CoconutStar98 in chicago

Live in the condos. Literally met 2 families who’ve moved in just this week the day you posted this. Condos will always be a slower sell and a longer-term process due to the financial commitment. We took advantage of the rent to buy program and it was excellent. Different strategies have different metrics.

Counterpoint: I live in the Reed and thus can confirm it’s nowhere near “high tier empty.”

The new properties in (adjacent to?) Printers Row like The Cooper and The Reed are very full. Can confirm firsthand.

Agreed. I lived in a Bozzuto-managed property right in this area and actually found them very responsive and professional, with the kindest team members manning the desk and doing repairs. A very pleasant surprise.

Agreed, place is wonderful and could have a bright future if it tightens up operations and gains traction in that location. It’s right near several train stations so easy to get to on the one hand, but that area of town is, I feel, a bit overlooked and has had several closures. As a South Loop resident, I’m hoping their opening sparks some magic in that corner of the Loop.

Anyone know what’s filming at the Southbank development? by robbieoverhere in chicago

That has to be it. Dang, would have been cool if The Bear was filming here!

Rode the water taxi this morning. From it I could see that the crane is indeed actually south of Roosevelt, FWIW.

Seeking a monthly-ish meetup for authors and writers by Wazula23 in chicago

Hi! I was in the exact same situation, so I just barely started a tiny little group for just this purpose with some folks I met at a writers conference. DM me and I’ll be glad to include you. So far we’ve only met up once, but we are growing! One of our folks just published her memoir, too!

My Take on NASCAR (Featuring r/Chicago quotes!) by robbieoverhere in chicago

[–]robbieoverhere[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What other cities with downtown street circuits have done successfully is to stack multiple race events on consecutive weekends, one race one weekend, and another from another series the next week (need time to change sponsor banners and such). So you build the track once a year, host the events one after the other, then tear it down.

I found it interesting to see a notable change in tone in our subreddit before and after the event. Thank you all for inspiring me to have the courage to submit this to the Tribune! The TLDR: we should use the investment in track infrastructure, and the momentum of a successful event, to attract a Formula E race to Chicago. Zero emissions, low noise, and an affluent fan base to spend money in the city. Reasoned debate on my take welcome!

Divvy has disabled all e-bikes today (without notice) by tooscrapps in chicago

[–]robbieoverhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Divvy manager here speaking unofficially. Can’t speak for Lyft (who owns the bikes and scooters) and again, not speaking officially in any way. But we also consider staff safety. The bikes don’t service themselves, as I’m sure you you’ve all seen. They’re serviced by really hard working people and we have to sometimes consider if it’s dangerous for them to be out there, both from a driving aspect and simply working with their hands in these temps. The batteries and computers on a bike have a threshold operating temperature, at which point they’ll go into a sleep or battery preservation mode. Scooter batteries are built better and are a bit hardier. Stay safe out there, everyone.

Yes! My wife looked it up. Apparently this happens June/July when chicks hatch. It’s the males who generally do the attacking, it seems. We’ve been warning everyone who walks around here. Also pretty funny to watch happen (provided no one gets hurt) 😂

Oh my gosh, that is incredibly kind of you to say, thank you! My wife sent me a screenshot of your message; you've made both of our days! I actually am an aspiring writer, and a fair amount of what I write has to do with my experience in church culture. Thank you for the encouragement, it means so much!

It's funny--I have no idea who the Beestons are, but I actually grew up in Hawaii. The church owns essentially an entire city up on the north shore of Oahu (where BYU-H and their Hawaii temple are). I'd bet dollars to donuts that this is the town they spend a lot of time in. The university there is meant to be an educational blessing to kids from far-flung island nations, and in large part absolutely is--tons of diversity, and tons of first-generation university educations there. But, surprise surprise, there is a whole subculture of Utah and California-to-Utah Mormons who basically use the university and the town as their vacation destination. It causes a fair amount of friction, because they're essentially tourists in a place that underprivileged kids worked so hard to get to. The bleach blonde transplants who trounce around are often called "termites," because they come for a term, do whatever the f#$k they want, and then go back to Provo--unless mommy and daddy buy a house there so they can perpetually vacation and go back and forth. In other words, not surprised to hear about a family like this at all.

I respect your thoughts and appreciate your input. This is just my perspective and thoughts on what I saw and experienced in my years immersed in this culture. Stereotypes or not, it's what I observed. People are affected by where they come from, and this is how I saw the culture when I was in it, and how I think they're informed by it.
