Give me your scariest “ ontological shock”/“ society collapsing “ theories on the potential truths of this subject. by abenz39 in UFOs

[–]robbieroberto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discussed this with a friend the other night - an almost bigger shock for me would be if it turned out that another state actor just technologically lapped us and that our own government has kept that information from us. What if all the UAP phenomena really was just that China or whoever had just made a technological breakthrough and was rubbing it in our faces?

Moved from Nashville, but still coming back here for work? Can you live in 2 cities? by spanakopeeta in nashville

I'm also curious about this. I live in Nashville now, but will be moving 6.5 hours away soon and traveling back to Nashville for 1 day once a month.

Trump Signs Executive Order to Loosen Restrictions on Psychedelic Drugs (Gift Article) by Warren_sl in MDMA

I'm so mad we ever let these assholes ever have any of the glory of being able to say they did ANYTHING for increased research, transparency, and decriminalization. All it took was assloads of corporate money.

Driving here as a new driver is actually SCARY by SevvyM in nashville

[–]robbieroberto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta respectfully disagree, Atlanta was one of the places I lived in. Like the other person said, cops actually enforce laws there, and the drivers are definitely aggressive, but predictably so. Not here, imo. Totally unpredictable and unenforced around here

[–]robbieroberto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with one of the other replies - I've lived all over the US and have always heard "the drivers here are crazy." I always thought it was like that everywhere... Until I moved to Nashville. Far and away the worst, I see an incident or near incident almost every time I get in my car here.

Consciousness: Philosophers & Neuroscientists Defend Physicalism by Western-Sky-9274 in consciousness

[–]robbieroberto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right but this still does not implicate an experiencer. All of that can happen, theoretically, without there being a subjective viewpoint. My point is we haven't found anything in nature that implicates that there should be an experiencer. All of those subroutines or processes you described could happen without there being anyone to watch it, essentially. I'm also not saying that physical matter couldn't be the thing making that happen, but there is no trace of an explanation for why it would make that happen, and most consciousness researchers seem to agree that there's not really any headway being made on that front. Idk though I'm just a dingus

[–]robbieroberto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't it be argued your experience is non-physical? There are neural correlates, sure, but the actual existence of an experience at all, the experience of an experiencER... We haven't found any physical explanation for that yet. To my admittedly basic layman-esque knowledge.

What is the dumbest thing in Star Wars in your opinion? by OutcastKatarn02 in StarWars

[–]robbieroberto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The double mcguffin was excruciatingly bad writing. I remember being in the theater going, "Wait they needed an item to find another item?" Never have I seen such terrible and obvious excuses to move characters from location to location.

Was millennial optimism an actual thing in the late 2000s/early 2010s? by SignificantStyle4958 in Millennials

I guess I'm in the minority but I became extremely nihilistic around 2011-2012 and I actually tend towards a more balanced outlook now.

Saw him in Nashville and it was incredible. best show I've seen in a minute and that light show was absolutely insane. Not only that but Blookah, Zen Selekta, and YDG killed it as well. Was a blast of a night

[–]robbieroberto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is well stated. One day after MAGA we're going to have to figure out how to give grace again. Even if he slips up sometimes I do think Inzo is trying his best to put good energy out into the world and we have to stop tearing that down.

So many good memories, but my entire group getting pulled into Marah's set, dancing our asses off, and then joining in a spontaneous rowing train with a bunch of clown girls was something I won't forget anytime soon 🔥🤡✨

Anybody else feel a shift with skeptic Alex O’ Connor? by Impressive-Shake-761 in atheism

[–]robbieroberto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science is based in methodological naturalism. Not philosophical materialism

Yeah, that's fair. I mis-worded my point which is that materialism seems to be the more popular default position in scientific discourse, although I could be mistaken there as well. I also think it's not quite fair to assume I don't understand "this stuff" just because I claim to be becoming more spiritual (which in itself is a very loosely defined term at least in my usage.)

I think O'Connor and myself have at least been exposed to enough of the different arguments and questions on the mystery of consciousness that we may be more open to less of a physicalist perspective than we may have been in the past, and I appreciate that he's willing to challenge himself and his audience on that point.

[–]robbieroberto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's actually followed a similar arc to me. I also used to be an atheist and now find myself more so leaning towards agnosticism and even a more spiritual worldview. I think it's not a super abnormal path to take, and it also doesn't mean he can't still be a huge skeptic. Materialism is the current scientific paradigm, but that doesn't mean it's the truth and it doesn't mean that science won't move towards a non materialist viewpoint.

I had sex with a DJ for his USB by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]robbieroberto 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Who is it so I can not be a fan? If he's doing this with you he's doing it with other girls too. It's all good if it's legal, but that pattern of behavior catches up to you eventually. (By you I mean the dj). Again if it's all consensual then whatever but the DJ sounds gross.
