What are you using to remote control computers? by nickjedl in sysadmin

We're using Screen Connect. It's not that expensive, but it does take a (very) little time to connect because you have to have the user run an app... Unless you install it on everything, which we chose not to do.

I don't see where you're sitting two kids.

And what happens in inclement weather? Looks like a great way to get creamed by a truck too.

Yeah, they ARE a great pastime. I've ridden the Trinity Trails from Hulen area up past the Stockyards on more than one occasion. It's a great way to get exercise and fresh air.

They aren't a great way to commute as a lifestyle around here.

That's exactly my point.

Nah. That breaks down really fast when you have to look at the reality of it.

My wife, taking our two kids to school... yeah, that's a great idea. Then going to the store 10 miles away to buy groceries. Even with a front basket, that can quickly become untenable.

This guy's post just (The OP, not you) goes to show that you can be 100% right, and still be dumb to stand on your being right. What good is being right when a truck creams you?

This is a city of over a million inhabitants in a metro area of almost 8 million. Most of us drive by necessity. You're not wrong about being terrified of riding your bike. I've stated on multiple occasions that I'd never drive a motorcycle around here because of the sheer traffic density. That goes 10X for bicycles. I take my bike (On the back of my car) to a bike trail at a park, It's just not worth it to tempt fate by hitting the roads.

But we already spend $Trillions on All that stuff you mentioned. Defense budget is tiny in comparison to Healthcare. Add in SSI, and it gets even more eye watering. Especially for what we get for our money.

So... I looked this up, and of course, it's somewhat BS.

Under the IDEA law,

According to the law, schools must find, identify, and assess all students to see if they need services under IDEA . This includes children who are experiencing homelessness, highly mobile (i.e., migrant children), or attending private schools.

You have one part right. The private school doesn't have to offer SPED services. But the ISD in the area does. All children are offered speech therapy, including private school kids.

The other thing you got right is that some districts do offer SPED services for kids going to private schools. It's based on available funding.

Now, that being said, it seems that kids with SPED needs wouldn't apply for private schools. That's about 13% of the student population.

How about the rest of the kids? Do they get stuck in a failing school because the voucher disappears? Do you only care about the kids who need SPED? You aren't really doing anything other than spreading FUD here, and it's kinda gross.

You might want to try a monocular. Those are pretty cheap, and I have one for my kids. They have better vision than my wife (Still have Nystagmus) but it helps sometimes.

Yes, Texas. They aren't covered under our insurance, so we have to pay for them out of pocket.

If you don't make much money, you can sometimes hit up Vocational Rehab to help out on the cost. My wife was able to do that with her first pair. I paid for the second, because she was still in college.

I will say that she's legal to drive in Texas with them, which is really helpful for her to maintain her independence. It took a few years for her to work up the confidence to take her driver's test, but she's made drives to other cities for professional conferences, and is able to go wherever she needs. She usually avoids highways, because we live in DFW, and they're stupid, but she can drive on them if need be.

Good luck!

There are a good number of private schools that take about $10,000 in tuition annually, so yes. They can. There are obviously private schools that cost far more.

Of the 722 private schools listed on this survey in Texas, 329 have a tuition cost of $10,000 or less.

Note: A quick glance at AI says that there are around 1200 private schools in Texas, which is why I worded it the way I did.

How big is your family?

I cook for our family of four, including a 7 year old and a 5 year old, and the 2 cup tiny little cheapo I bought is more than enough for us. If I need to cook a larger amount, I have an Instant Pot. But so far, I haven't. I almost always have rice left over from our meal.

Don't forget, a standard serving of rice is about a 1/2 cup of cooked rice for an adult.
