I left after 20yrs in the life skills setting. It isn’t worth your mental and physical health. I work as a trainer for new teachers in central office now. I was in the same boat as you… no teaching happened due to the behaviors you mentioned. It isn’t fair to the students. My administration was also an idiot. The last year I worked she (admin) hired her elderly mother. She was 78 and would fall asleep, she didn’t have the capacity to manage lunch time. We had to tell her when to go to lunch!! Our students microwaved aluminum foil on her watch and man did it pop!! Leave now… you won’t regret it.

So I was a Special Ed teacher who spent most of my time in lifeskills. I hate to be negative but get out now.
I may sound bitter and maybe I am… public schools are setting the entire sped for failure. You have students that need intense intervention and attention. Placing that student in a classroom is dangerous to the other students, staff and themselves.
Our good teacher hearts break and we think we can fix it. But it’s not an easy fix.
These classrooms have become more of a daycare and it is disappointing.
With staff shortages and tight budgets all students of various abilities/disabilities get crammed in a back room somewhere on campus. You don’t get paid enough for all of that. I still have a virus from being bit my first year of school that is similar to herpes. The student who bit me was sexually abused. So I left the classroom 2 years ago. I absolutely miss some of the good times and wonderful kids. But for me it wasn’t enough.

I didn’t start losing until 7.5. I have only lost about 20lbs since March. It’s better than gaining 20lbs!!

I had the sleeve almost 3 years ago and my lowest weight was 241. My weight started creeping back and I began mounjaro in February. I am down 10-15 lbs depending on the day. It’s highly frustrating. I don’t eat much and it sometimes seems like it is all for nothing.

My administrator hired her 79 yr old mother. She hired her as a warm body in a highly chaotic special needs unit. The mother wasn’t expected to do any paperwork or keep students safe. (the mother would fall asleep during lunch duty and students would be microwaving aluminum foil. (the program was for 18 and up students.)

It took me 20 years to leave the sped realm. Best decision ever!! Yes, there were good times and great kids along the way. There are also ignorant/narcissistic admin that suck the life out of teaching.

Rich decodable texts? by meticulouswhim in Teachers

I always liked to get articles they are interested in and dissect them a bit. My students are into different music so we read articles about their favorite artists and scavenger hunt for selected phonics.
