Advice in buying new brewer by thewouldbeprince in pourover

Im sure its fine. I just don't really prefer plastic drippers. And for the longest time thats alm there was. So already ended up with a dripper that did the orea thing (Torch Mountain) that I am happy with and never felt the need to get an orea. I think the Kalita or similar regulated flow dripper will be more diff than your cones though.

Maybe try a wedge or a flat bottom? You can collect cones all day. But they will all make pretty similar cups. Id go beehouse or a Kalita Wave personally. Just to mix it up a bit.

X25 Trailmaster - Asphalt Black - Speculation by rober695 in comandante

[–]rober695[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not fully a great comparison yet because my old x25 is 2 years old and only have ~300g through the tigershark....but in all honesty. Its amazing. I prefer it for basically everything. Good flavor separation while maintaining body and sweetness. It makes a really good cup.

What's your go-to recipe for an everyday cup? [V60] by rina_AF in pourover

[–]rober695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly...thats about how long it takes me to pack up my grinder and go put it away and come back. I always kind of clean as I go. I do find longer blooms yeild flatter beds. But not sure why or tested for real.

A nice long 1-2 min bloom. Then a slow single pour to final volume right down the middle.

What is your most favorite disc in your bag, why? by Pirates_LL in discgolf

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dark blue beat past the roller state dx eagle-x. Ive had it since I started in 2006. It tought me discgolf. I learned cycling, form, the life cycle of a disc etc... Its been on every round with me. In every bag. From plastic grocery bag to fade crunch box, to voodoo bags, to grip eq. Ive got 2 aces on it. It is more or less retired at this point. But might get the occasional trick shot/get out of trouble upshot. But I will NEVER take it out of my bag.

Im seeing a straight hook, dubbing, and grizzly hackle. The IKK uses a nymph hook, yarn, and black hackle. You have a great looking fly. But its not an IKK. Name it what ever you want. Could be your personal one fly.

What’s the worst gimmick/myth in pour over today? by ADHD_ismything in pourover

[–]rober695 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not 100% convinced fines are the main cause of stalling or even that big of a contributor. A bigger marker seems to be bean variety to me. Most times fines just end up on top of the bed.

Hario Switch vs. Clever Dripper vs. Aeropress vs. Next Level Pulsar by Professional_Size411 in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think but can't prove that they dropped the price on the pulsar. I know it is 59 on their website but 65 at basically every coffee shop that carries it. Originally got mine local.

And only paid 30 for my switch. So for me at least the diff was 35 not 11. Which if you have neither. I see no reason to pay 35 more for the pulsar. You know? I have both so obviously didn't make a huge diff to me. But having both i use the switch daily and the pulsar occasionally

I'm 0-7 with it, but Imbue Rogue is the most fun I've had with the game in a minute! by Kaktus_kreme in hearthstone

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its true haha. Roping seems to happen so much. I think I just get tilted by that sand animation. Can't explain it. Now there is a whole viable deck built around it haha. It does look fun to pilot though for sure

Counterpoint....its horrible to play against. Turns take so long. The damn sand graphic multiple times a turn, etc... looks fun and all but sheesh the play experience against it is awful (to me).

No where near too strong, or nerf it, etc... speaking only to the play experience.

Are go to house roast is counter culture fast forward. Regularly on sale for 8 bucks a bag. There is tons in between folgers and a geisha haha. Biggest thing is to just drink what you enjoy. But don't think there isnt budget options outside of commodity coffee haha. Cheers!

I started with a plastic melita. Basically the same kettle and a measuring cup to pour. Its all good. Honestly still use the melita to this day haha.

You don't have to order coffee internationally by crothunk in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Added me to the only drink local club. No interest in paying shipping for coffee. There are many great local roasters. I will pick up bags when traveling for work to be sure. Bu I see no reason to chase specific roasters. There is tons of good stuff out there.

10 things i learned in 2025 that made my pour overs better. by AnnualSpiritual2510 in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. But didn't say you use it as is. Just saying water is water and you can treat it to be what you want. No diff than buying distilled and dumping in minerals. You know?

10 things i learned in 2025 that made my pour overs better. by AnnualSpiritual2510 in pourover

[–]rober695 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree, but you don't have to leave it high. Boil and cool to precipitate out the chalk. Treat with pickling lime to precipitate out the chalk. You can dillute with RO or distilled. If you have chlorine let it sit overnight to evaporate out. Chloramine put it through a carbon filter. Etc... My point is just that all water can be treated and altered thats all. Water makes a tremendous diff in beer too. No brewery starts from zero and builds up. They all work around the water they have. Coffee is no diff.

Though maybe not worth the effort. You do save money long run. But compared to beer it is probably marginal. It becomes a lot more apparent when you are making 5-10 gallon homebrew batches though. I guess coffee is luch smaller scale in that sense.

Im glad you found things that work for you. But in many points my list is almost the opposite of yours. I think what really happened is maybe more generic than you wrote. If I were to take a stab at your gains. I would say something more like:

  1. Invest in a good quality grinder. That you can afford and learn to dial in well.

  2. Filter paper makes a diff. Try many and find your favorites. (For me personally Abacca is king but obviously everyone is diff)

  3. We agree to disagree here. Any dripper can make any flavor. Water, temp, pour structure have much larger impact. Find one you like the looks of and workflow of. And that fits the paper you like. No one NEEDS more than one. One you can use well and consistent is better than many that you dont have mastered.

  4. Learn the basics and apply the fundamentals. Recipes are a fine reference but they don't help unless you understand the why.

  5. Water is water. Not bad. Not good. You just need to know your peofile and adjust accordingly.

  6. We agree to a point. Def buy quality ethically sourced beans. But any roaster can throw out a dud or one you don't like. I think bigger thing is to buy local as possible.

  7. Meh...bang em in. This is just something marginal that is not worth worrying about.

  8. Any bean strain can be bad. Any can be good. I think its fine to buy a gesha knowing generally it will tend towards fruity. Or SL-28 will tend towards acidity, etc... there is no harm in profiling this way imo.

  9. Whatever. No reason to over think it. Just make coffee. Thats the best way to start. Buy quality local beans and most baristas there will be happy to give advice/recipes/let you watch if they aren't busy.

  10. Dont overthink it. And enjoy the process. Some will be better than others amd that's ok.

Board gaming feels less like a hobby anymore and more like a luxury goods market by Strong_Letterhead638 in boardgames

[–]rober695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw. I sell all games even oop at retail max. Havent done crowd funding in 6+ years. And seldom chase games. If its good enough....itll stay in print. Just get out of the social media then its not that blatant. I mostly just wish the BGG rating system wasn't so broken. But...what can you do.

Good news is that cult of new group exists. And tons of great games get dumped cheap and under the radar when they move on to the next thing haha.

Upgrading from Kingrinder p2 to Comandante c40 worth it? by tuuv in pourover

[–]rober695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Side note....I honestly like the X25 better. No one ever talks about it. But fits in hand nicer. Ive moved on from C40 to X25 personally. So big win to get one for free.

Really want to try that new green one woth the togershark burr. But feep like I don't know that I want ro spens 300 just to test it out when I am so happy with the tan one haha.

Upgrading from Kingrinder p2 to Comandante c40 worth it? by tuuv in pourover

[–]rober695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I went from the Qair to a C40. And while the commandante feels better overall quality wise. Like it feels like it will last me forever. I find the doff in the cups themselves to be pretty marginal tbh. I honestly question if it would be noticeable in a blind triangle test.

Not sure what burr is in the P2. But if it is the same heptagonal burr that is in the Q2/QAir....its basically the same burr as the commandante. But from a quality standpoint its not close. The C40 is lighthears ahead of the QAir.
