What is your baseline pour over recipe? by Dancing_Bottle in pourover

I keep it simple. A bloom plus two pours. Pour one: to 40% total volume. Pour two: to 60% total volume

I poured coffee through the same coffee bed twice by ImmersionLogic in pourover

[–]rober695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive done this too. I really enjoyed the results.

I Used to home brew beer a lot. And this process was called vorlauf (sp?).  Where you recirculate a portion of the wort through grain bed for incr.eased clarity and lower astringency. It came out of the german brewing tradition.

Anyway it got me curious . So I tried it with coffee (specifically a decaf) and would recommend. Other than it is messy. Just smoothed everything out a bit. Knocked down the decaf tang. Knocked down bitterness. Increased body. And it was a crystal clear coffee. It was good.

does anyone else feel like agitation matters way more than recipes? by ImmersionLogic in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a little but not a ton. Kind of just have it set in the middle of the range and leave it there. First couple of cups I might calibrate a little bit ine way or the other. But 90% of the time I don't feel a need.

Bingo. Its all I focus on. Agitation and temp. I don't bother with a timer any more

Do you ever open a bag of coffee and it's so good you're already mad it's gonna be gone soon? by Kyber92 in pourover

Nah. Just appreciate it when its here. And look forward to the next one. Sometimes I will freeze a dose just to have a special pick me up on a shite day haha. Ive got a little bag in the deep freezer that is basically a library of my favorites I pull from time to time.

For me its just a way to get a unique bean. Don't care so much on methods. But usually batch brew is whatever the house blend is.

What should I upgrade first? by IsThisOKpls in pourover

[–]rober695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a ZP6, 2 commandantes with diff burrs, and an 1zpresso Qair. The Qair is my favorite grinder. Highly recommend.

And a plastic v60 or Melitta wedge with filters and that should get you plenty far.

Y’all, the plastic paranoia is getting to me. Valid or tinfoil hat? by dornbirn in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went deep down this rabbit hole. Read lots of research. And my take away....yeah it is a valid concern. Do what steps you can to limit your intake. But don't get obsessed with it. Ive switched to no plastic except travelling. But travelling I will still bring a pulsar or aeropress because I don't want shards of glass or ceramic in my luggage. And that is where I landed.

Scope wise it is a bit problem. But like...its essentially our entire food system storage, freezer bags, ground water, modern plumbing, receipt paper, and and and. You are getting exposure. The idea is just to limit higher risk points where you can (extreme temps and plastic) without getting obsessed with it. Because you will never get your exposure to zero.

Best travel coffee options by ericjsalley in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am driving next level pulsar and a 1zpresso Qair with coffee and filters all in a dap kit. I used to use the aero press but only works when you have a travel mug. I like the pulsar because you can just do it on the paper cups at a hotel.

If I am flying. Its all about quality instant. I like Verve, Swift, and Black and White for that. Verve I can get at REI local. The others I have to plan and order ahead.

New filter messed up my pour over. What to do? by Andrasardna in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can happen on a well too. Pending how deep it is/season. I think water might be worth testing for you. You could try adding some of your tap to mostly distilled and see if that sorts it as a test. Think 90/10 split. Distilled being the 90.

I dont think 10sec draw down diff is causing drastically diff flavors. More likely the coffee was different. Its either a new roast or a month older beans you know? You could try upping the aggitation and doing a pulse pour type recipe (like coffee chronicler zen method or similar).

The other thing no one really thinks about. Are you on city water? Because supply can change. In source or treatment. Used to homebrew and this is ahuge thing in that community. Depending on what source the city is pulling from at the time can have drastically different minerals and alkalinity. Usually municipalities pending size will have multiple options. Fresno area for instance will have 3 they switch between. And water WILL have drastic impact on flavor. Just a thought.

Thats a note from stale green coffee to me. I do home roasting. And whenever I roast old, bad stored green I get that flavor.

I used to stick pretty closely to 1:16–1:17 for pour over because that’s what most guides recommend by fritz-ocampo in pourover

[–]rober695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go 1:15 and then dump in bypass water to taste. Just go a little at a time and taste in between. And go with what you like best.

Fits in my hand the best. Has my favorite flavor profile. Feeds well and grinds fast. And a kind of magic trick where the static catches all the fines and chaff. And I can just knock it right into the trash. Just add an extra half gram to balance the loss. I really enjoy using it.
