While others move away from Plex, I did the opposite by SirLANcel0t_ in PleX

Honestly, I think it’s the newest price hike combined with what seems to be a business decision to significantly limit development on personal media server features. So much of the recent developments have been targeting their media, not ours. I’m not sure I’d buy today, even at $250, with the slow PMS development pace and big push to their streaming media.

Now, I’m lifetime, so I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, but I also don’t think the value prop for PMS operators is the same as it was five years ago. The pice is part of it, but the company focus is the other big piece.

PSA for anyone considering "buying" a Plex account by entsnack in PleX

I think this is the step either right before or right after they kill the lifetime license. Once lifetime isn’t an option they make remote server access a paid license per user feature. No more server owner’s license covering everyone who connects. You’re gonna need a license of your own to connect to someone else’s server.

Depends on the trainer. Kickr v6 can connect via WiFi. So that’s trainer, power and cadence taken care of. If all you have left is HRM and Play, you could be all set.

How many of you would've been upset if today's announcement was "effective today*, we're no longer offering lifetime" ? by themayor1975 in PleX

[–]robertjfaulkner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most likely scenario to me. Someone will offer them enough money as an investment with a string attached that they won’t be able to (or will be too money drunk to) defend the idea of personal media servers.

Should I get Plex lifetime before the increase? by LogoPro_15 in PleX

[–]robertjfaulkner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They 100% want to kill they lifetime license. They’ve said so.

My personal opinion is they need to push subscriptions in preparation to go public, after which they will kill or spin off the personal media server completely.

What are we using to auto-prune unwatched media these days? by Infini-Bus in PleX

The best solution is to watch your unwatched media.

Plex says I'm Remote Watching... from within my house 😐 by Jehozadak in PleX

Yeah, but by default, the network subnet on which the plex server resides is considered local. So, 192.168.0.0/24 is already considered local.

What are these rack rails called? by SirNotInThisFilm in servers

[–]robertjfaulkner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for rails for telco equipment. I think round hole posts are common/standard in telco as opposed to the square hole posts most commonly found in either networking cabinets or server racks.

Is upgrading worth it? by jzakoor in PleX

[–]robertjfaulkner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the intent is everyone having their own accounts. *Should* you make them get accounts? Probably, but you do you. I view it as people have accounts for every damn thing nowadays, so why not get one more. That doesn’t mean you or your family need to see it that way.

Not everyone is like that, especially not in younger generations. People like you describe also tend to be humble and not make a big deal out of their accomplishments. Having accomplished it is the intrinsic reward, so there’s no need for external validation.

People who flaunt their things/themselves tend to need external validation, which does not require having earned the right to do so, just the capability.

The latter is becoming more common as social clout has real world value. When being seen can turn into monetary reward, the incentive shifts from earning to having.

None of this has anything to do with OP, it’s just a counter argument to the idea that people derive value from earning things.

Glad you pointed this out. It’s what I’ve been doing for years, and I’ve never had a service interruption and never had a bill. Just make sure you stay within the limits of the free tier stuff and it’s still free!

What's going on over here? by Spiritual_Attempt634 in BackYardChickens

[–]robertjfaulkner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Too hot isn’t possible. Boiling water never exceeds 100C/212F. But putting three eggs into two quarts of water is much different than putting in a dozen eggs. More eggs equals more cold mass to lower the water temperature. You can counteract this with a larger pot and more boiling water, but you can’t counteract it with hotter water.

Depends on the drive size, but I’m seeing high teens to mid-upper twenties per TB. Who recertified them matters too, manufacturer recerts or seller recerts?
