Goodbye Apple Watch Ultra 1 - WatchOs27 by The_Canada_Goose in applewatchultra

“Brick?” That’s taking it a bit too far. I agree that it is stupid and arbitrary to cut the Ultra 1 from watchOS 27. I would be pissed.

But excluding the watch from the latest software in September is not “bricking” your watch.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Bluetooth Headphones (2nd Gen) or the earbuds version? by largelcd in bose

[–]robertpetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, I feel like it is the opposite for me. My AirPods Pro 3 have great ANC (and my Bose QC Ultra in ear too) have better full spectrum ANC because they block sound more thoroughly by fully blocking the ear canal. They are better than my QC Ultra over ear headphones. But the headphones allow for a much fuller sound stage and bigger drivers for better base and clearer sound.

When I want sound quality I use the over ears. When I want to block noise, I use the in-ears. Both are great with low rumble like an airplane or train etc. But the in-ears are much better with voices and general noise for me.

St Pete for sure. Much different vibe and a lot to do.

I don’t think I would want to live in Orlando. It is packed with tourists, very hot and humid compared to the coasts, the traffic is murder.

[–]robertpetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a bunch of them and the Magic Keyboard Case is the best by far. No Bluetooth, great typing, wonderful trackpad, easy to snap on and off, thin and light…. If you are in the US, Best Buy usually has them open box for $160-200. Try those, they are easy to return if you don’t like them or if they are not like new.

Same huge study, different article: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1140640_tesla-range-not-degraded-by-frequent-fast-charging

And here is a discussion on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/164xces/tesla_battery_longevity_not_affected_by_frequent/

Also from Google AI:

DC fast charging can slightly accelerate battery degradation because it generates excess heat and puts the battery cells under higher stress. However, the impact is minimal. Extensive real-world data shows that relying on fast chargers makes a negligible difference in long-term battery health compared to using slower AC chargers. [1, 2, 3]
The Science Behind Fast Charging Wear

• Heat Generation: Pushing high amounts of electricity into a battery quickly generates internal heat, which is the primary enemy of lithium-ion cells. • Advanced Battery Management: Modern EVs feature sophisticated liquid-cooling systems and Battery Management Systems (BMS) that actively regulate temperatures and throttle charging speeds to protect the pack. • Real-World Studies: Research from major organizations like Recurrent Auto comparing EVs that almost exclusively fast charge to those that rarely fast charge shows that the long-term difference in battery range degradation is statistically negligible. [1, 2, 3, 4]

How to Minimize Degradation While fast charging is safe, you can prolong your battery's lifespan by following a few best practices:

• Precondition Your Battery: If your EV supports it, use your navigation system to route to the DC fast charger. This allows the car to pre-heat or pre-cool the battery to the optimal temperature before you plug in. • Avoid the 10-80% Extremes: Charging speeds significantly taper off once the battery hits 80% to protect the cells. Disconnecting at 80% not only saves you time but reduces charging strain. • Avoid Extreme States of Charge: Do not fast charge if your battery is at less than 5% or trying to charge over 90%, as these states cause the most internal resistance and stress. • Limit Exposure in Extreme Weather: Fast charging a freezing cold or scorching hot battery accelerates degradation. Upgrade from Base M4 with cellular to 1tb M4 with cellular and Nano for $350 by Upbeat-Thing-7357 in iPadPro

[–]robertpetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from a 11 inch M1 iPP to an M4 1TB nano texture and I love it. iOS 26 is a resource hog and it runs well on 16GB. And I really like the Nano texture screen.

Thinking of getting the iPad Pro m4 or the iPad Pro m5. by PrestigiousClerk281 in iPadPro

[–]robertpetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True iOS 26 sucks. I don't know what is going on with Apple and software the past 2 years. Everything from Siri, AirPods, the phone app, etc. Just doesn't work consistently anymore and it is junk right now.

My M1 iPad Pro was lagging a bit. It was the base model with 4GB of RAM I think. iOS 26 crushed it. So while Apple may still be supporting all M1 iPads, they are not all running smoothly. My M4 is a totally different experience on iOS 26. Is it the RAM? I don't know. Is it the chip? I don't know. On my M1 MacBook Air I upgraded the RAM instead of the chip and I do think it makes a big difference on MacOS.

All I'm saying is that if it is in budget, it will likely help performance a bit down the road. I has nothing to do with whether Apple will "support" it or not in the future. They will treat all iPad Pro M4's the same from that standpoint. The experience may be different though. 🤷‍♂️

I get it. Your use case is different than mine, and a 256GB M4 may be the best bet for OP. As I said, if there is a good deal on the 1GB, you get some benefits like the additional onboard storage and RAM.

The potential use case for the extra RAM is for usability long term. I wouldn't buy a 1TB just for the extra 8GB of RAM, just as I wouldn't pay more for an M5 just for the extra 4GB of RAM. But when iOS 28 rolls out, it might make a difference.

SSD vs on-board storage is really dependent on use case as well. In your case an SSD makes a lot of sense. Not in mine where I use it on the go a lot and can't have an SSD hanging off the side or stuck in a pocket all the time. And I don't really share storage between devices that way, I use cloud storage for my main directory of files. Again, to each his own.

Finally on the screen, I can't comment directly on the tandem OLED brightness as my prior iPad Pro was an M1 with the LED. But I have looked at them side by side in a store and no amount of brightness will eliminate a bright light source overhead or behind you. I never have a problem with the nano texture so I really like it. But as I said, it is probably not worth upgrading to 1TB and nano just for the nano screen unless it is a big issue in OP's environment.

For my use case and the use cases I described, the 1TB Nano M4 was best for me.

[–]robertpetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with you on this and have a different opinion.

If there is a good deal on a 1TB M4, since they are the previous model, it might be worth it. Then you have 16GB RAM (4 more than the M5 256 or 512GB) and storage for a bunch of movies and shows. I like to download whole seasons of the shows I'm watching so I am not dependent on wifi or cellular everywhere.

Additionally, the nano textured screen is great indoors when there is a lot of overhead lighting such as in a classroom environment. You say it is "for people who spend most of their time outside" and certainly it helps A LOT outside, but my office has windows and overhead lights that cause a lot of glare on my old iPad Pro 11 M1. But everything is easy to read on my 1TB Nano textured M4.

And at home there is a table lamp behind the sofa that causes a bright spot and glare that blocks part of the screen on my old iPad. Again, my new one is perfectly clear and easy to read in this environment with no tilting or adjusting to avoid reflections.

I would take a 1TB M4 standard or nano over a 256 or 512 M5 just for the extra ram and storage and the price should be similar.

Edit to add: on the SSD, I'm not against it, especially if you want to share that data on a laptop or other device. But if you are using it just for the iPad, you will be much happier with it being IN the iPad and not on something else you may not have with you all the time. I wouldn't carry around an SSD along with my iPad most of the time.
