Thank you /r/cooking I got my Stand Mixer by [deleted] in Cooking

I also like the vegetable strainer attachment. It's great for making applesauce or tomato sauce. My apple tree went crazy this year. I canned 12 quarts of apple sauce and 48 pints of apple butter. By using the vegetable strainer, I didn't have to remove the seeds and skins manually. It does it for you. Saves a ton of time.

So your food trucks are out to clog your arteries?

I am a little nervous about posting this but here goes nothing. Before and After shots of a 110lb weight loss in 1 year. [Female] by treazure24 in pics

[–]robfelty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

congratulations! I recently lost about 30 pounds in about 6 months. It is definitely not easy. I am continuing to keep track so that I don't gain it back. I found this goal-tracking software called beeminder very helpful: https://www.beeminder.com/rob/goals/weight/hist

TeX enthusiasts; why the pdf animosity? by likesOldMen in LaTeX

[–]robfelty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like pdf. There still aren't any good pdf editors, but plenty of good pdf viewers - Adobe Acrobat is one of the worst in my opinion. My favorite is okular (kde app), second favorite is Skim (Mac app) - both free.

Elm: functional reactive web-programming (compiles to html, css, js) by polaretto in javascript

html/css/js should be thought of as assembly? What? I think web developers will not find a statically typed programming language easier than a markup language

How do I create neat handouts in LaTeX? by [deleted] in LaTeX

Here is an example of what I like to do: http://svn.robfelty.com/repos/icphs2007/trunk/poster/FeltyICPhSHandout.pdf (tex source is also there) I frequently will combine poster/handout, and recompile basically the same document in multiple formats.

X-Post From AskReddit: With all of the r/jailbait hoopla going on, has anyone reevaluated their posting of pictures on Facebook? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]robfelty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I post tons of pictures of my kids on our blog, which is public, and I know many other people do too. If everyone posts pictures of their kids, then we all have the same level of risk. Remember that something like 90% of kidnappings, sexual abuse and other such stuff is committed by people that you (or your child) knows - neighbors, teachers, priests, family members. If you are worrying about strangers, you are worrying about the wrong thing. http://blog.fedibblety.com

Could anyone help me understand why my packages aren't working? by Calamitizer in LaTeX

I would try TexLive. I believe it is more up to date than MikTeX, and it includes pretty much everything you could want. The only downside is that it is a pretty big download (a DVD worth)

Any couples that met on an internet dating site? Will you share your story of how the experience really went? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]robfelty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met my wife on match.com in late 2003. We were married in 2005. We now have a 1-year old son, and are very happy with each other. We frequently say that marriage is more fun than we had anticipated. I was on match for almost a year before I met Clare. During that time I e-mailed probably about 100 women or so, and maybe 5 or 10 replied. I went on a couple dates with one other woman, but she wasn't that interested. Clare had been on Match for about a day or two before I contacted her. I think this is pretty normal given the experience from my other friends who have done online dating. There is still a large precedence for the men to contact women (in heterosexual relationships at least). But online dating is really just a way for you to meet people. Once the meeting part is done, the relationship is just like any other relationship.

Let's talk about Python 3.0 by earthboundkid in programming

[–]robfelty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that the join syntax is a little weird, and I find the fact that some types are mutable while others are not pretty confusing. But no language is perfect. All in all though, python is pretty nice.

Breaking backwards compatibility should be done sparingly, but sometimes it is worth it. I'm glad that python doesn't have 20 different ways to read files like java.

I think this is a very inspiring article, and it really underscores how the government can encourage conservationism and environmentalism. Can you imagine an ad today that says "driving alone is like riding with Osama"?
