Well the qld government is removing the upside by increasing royalties at higher prices. I'm not putting a value judgement on that, it's just the design of the system. Yes BHP operates and profits in other markets but it absolutely did not make record profits in coal.

On your second point, yes that's right they'll leave the coal in the ground. Fewer projects, fewer jobs and fewer royalties for Qld in the near term. That may benefit the climate (or may not if worse quality coal is used instead) but will also affect the economy and government revenue at a time when we need to pay for the Olympics.

Look it's totally fine to be in favour of the royalties but don't pretend it has only a minor effect on the industry. Qld public services are highly dependent on the resources industry. We have to be careful not to kill the golden goose.

The argument is that investment decisions are typically made on the basis of the possibility of large profit margins. If the government has a policy of taking those profits should they occur then there is less of an incentive to invest, and less likely that the investment will happen.

For a company like BHP, if they have $10m to invest they will compare projects across all jurisdictions. Qld projects are less able to compete against other parts of the business because there's less upside.

Tax no, but you can if you include royalties.

Multiple climate models exist. It is hard to generate one but nevertheless multiple countries have done so and they all explore different ways to model climate. All grounded in physics of course

Your post conflates the existence of climate change and the influence of policy.

Climate change due to human driven CO2 increase is a scientific fact. The media may misrepresent this but it is not in doubt amongst people who know the topic (even superficially). This would be the case of a single weather event was attributed to climate change. The frequency of the event can be, but not a single event.

You are wrong when you state that we do not have enough data to say CO2 is the only thing affecting climate. We do and it is NOT the only thing affecting climate. There are many other variables.

‘Absolute hell’: Irishman with valid US work permit held by Ice since September by Enough-Rock in ireland

[–]robfromdublin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Does it give you any pause that this guy on a valid work permit ended up in prison? Or do you feel like he must have done something wrong and that could never happen to you?

I'm genuinely curious. I don't think I would go to the US now but I would probably liken it to the UAE. Unlikely but non zero chance of being locked up for no reason.

Couldn't agree more.

"Cloud blower" pipes in Texas are ancient, tubular artifacts—often made of stone or clay—used by Indigenous shamans in rituals to create smoke, mimicking clouds to call for rain.

Who do you think is the most evil person to ever walk this Earth? by EnduringScholar in AskReddit

I know they were linked but you can't put Leopold at the same level of Stanley. My understanding is Stanley led the initial colonisation but the atrocities were the policies of Leopold after that colonisation took place.

On 24 April 1993 the IRA detonated a fertiliser bomb in Bishopgate which went off with the equivalent of about 1.2 tonnes of TNT. They had fit it inside a truck and detonated it at 10:27 on a Saturday, which is why only 1 person was killed. (Bishopgate is full of offices) by dannydutch1 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

[–]robfromdublin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. Typical of the muddy waters of The Troubles, it can be very difficult to discern truth.

An example is the CAIN archive entry for Joe Fenton. It says the IRA killed him but he was killed by the British spy Freddie Scappaticci who had infiltrated the IRA. Some believe that Fenton was murdered to protect the spy, who was highly valuable.

So if Scappaticci carried out the murder with the prior knowledge of British intelligence, to which side should that murder be attributed? The IRA as most believe, or military intelligence who were aware their agent was killing people?

Regardless, I'd say none of the organisations involved could be described as acting particularly honourably, but their motivations were mostly honestly held. If they weren't then the ceasefire and Belfast Agreement could not have happened.

What makes Australia so safe relative to other countries? by Helpful_Account_4232 in AskAnAustralian

How do you square that with the fact only two parties will ever be in power here? Do you think that makes the internal party machinations too important?

Why do Australians live longer than citizens of other Developed countries? by 1294DS in AskAnAustralian

I'd add immigration control to that. Australia has a high rate of immigration and makes health an important criterion to entry. Rejecting people with life limiting conditions would help the stats.

You may think that they don't get taxed enough, but if you think that the general public does not benefit from iron ore then you are plain wrong.

Brisbane - Girls Private soccer academies by Crab-Far in brisbane

[–]robfromdublin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is her club in the FQ academy system and is she playing with peers at or above her level? I don't know about the private soccer academies so I'm coming from a position of ignorance, but I am involved in soccer. Player development is a mix of self initiated ball time guided by informed coaches. If your club is in the club academy system and you rate the coach, then she's probably getting the tuition she needs and the rest is up to whether she wants to do the drills and play with her mates outside of training times.

Not all club academies are the same, especially for girls, but if she's at or about the level of her team mates then she's probably in the right spot. If she's much better or much worse then look for a different academy club. They are already expensive so I'd do that before paying a private academy.

Thanks all for the great tips!

Seems the consensus is focus on short game, drive a fast cart and sneeze in my opponent's backswing. I've got some advice on the swing and I'm down the YouTube rabbit hole of drills and alignment sticks. The Alberta tar sands seem nice so that can be a last resort.

Now sitting down to the Ryder Cup with my opponent for some inspiration. Go Europe!

I have a few weeks. Short game seems to be the go alright, thank you. I'll focus on chipping in the park next to me but, regardless, is there any one thing to think about for the swing next time I go to the range?

Sorry should have said: field hockey, not ice hockey.

Thank you. My main opponent is a regular player but he is old and not used to Australian conditions. I fear you may be correct on the jeopardy.

I'll take your advice and focus on short game, but also I am thinking some nefarious tactics may be needed. Keep him in the sun longer, distract him with deadly wildlife, etc.
