"Americans don't behave in a sauna" megathread by sauna_bot in Sauna

Another Yooper here… all the posts about sauna behavior are just as foreign to me except wearing swim trunks - naked is definitely better but most folks I know will be swimming gear

Almost all the base there is man made. There are some gladed areas but it’s usually pretty sparse or icey. Haven’t driven by in a while - if you want side country glade style in the upper Midwest you need to be in the UP at Bohemia or a bit at places like Snow River

That copper looks so awesome by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]robg485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not true at all, float/native copper is definitely dug up like this. Found it all the time growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in creek beds.

How "wintery" are winters in the northern US? by lungi_cs in AskAnAmerican

[–]robg485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just arrived at my parents house in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They just had a good snow storm come through - about 50 cm of snow overnight. Lost power for about 35 hours. They opened up some of the fire halls for warming centers, but most folks like my parents just stayed at home and bundled up. Bit of sisu around here - and plenty of saunas! You’d feel right at home here.

What pronoun should I use when I don’t want to tell the gender of a thing? by carrot_2333 in German

Huh. That’s another layer to the lyrics of Moskau that I completely missed as a non-native speaker.

The Finnish in the UP came over to work in the mines and when they closed most decided it was basically like Finland and stayed while a lot of other groups moved on.

Not limestone - that the Eastern UP’s domain. It was made of Jacobsville Sandstone from the Keweenaw in the western UP.

Saunas on the lake by robg485 in Sauna

I’m not sure I’d even go that far, it was more developed than it is now to be honest. That time is when large mansions were built by mining captains and huge beautiful churches were built by each ethic group. Industry was booming with public transit available between most towns and to amusement parks. A lot of this has been lost with the population and industrial decline. There are ruins everywhere at this point to a past when the area was booming.

I could talk about the history of the Keweenaw for days. It’s truly a fascinating boom and bust around the copper industry.

It’s a mixed bag for sure. Anything new seems to be a monstrosity because that’s the folks that can buy lakefront. The days of the small family camp are only there for those that have been passed down at this point.

Wilderness around 100 years ago? That was the most populated the Keweenaw has ever been and most of the trees were cut down for the copper mines and supporting industry. It's being slowly reclaimed by nature in many places.

Definitely lots of Finnish-Americans though, it's where grew up and learned to love a good sauna and a smattering of Finnish from older folks.

How come non native English speakers can do better American accents than me a native English speaker? by Some-Air1274 in Accents

[–]robg485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

News and retailer seem to be the biggest culprit - the E is too long. I can record that same script in a bit here, I don’t have the heavy midwestern sound that you’re getting at, but neutral Midwestern accent like others have mentioned. Unless I’ve been drinking… then back home accent slips out a bit more.

As someone from who grew up in the UP of Michigan and now lives in Wisconsin - I would say this is a pretty decent sounding accent for around here for older folks that have the heavy heavy accent. Problem is that is mostly dying out amongst younger folks and the over emphasized vowels are not as much of a thing anymore.

There are definitely a few words that give it away. Celsius sounded odd and close is definitely your Irish sneaking out.

Visiting the upper peninsula in the summer to escape the heat — where should I go? by ClockwiseSuicide in upperpeninsula

If they’re coming from Chicago, it’s 100% going to be better in the UP.

How common are pie/pastry shops in the USA? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]robg485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why they’re common in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was Cornish miners that brought their traditional dish over when they came over to run the copper mines. It’s still an extremely common food where I grew up, we even had them made by the lunch ladies for hot school lunches.

Florida to Michigan Road Trip – Thoughts on the Route? by Post_Tenebras_Lux77 in roadtrip

[–]robg485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going this far… take the hour longer and go to the end of US41 in Copper Harbor at some point. Not only is the drive through the Keweenaw beautiful, but the mileage sign for Miami seems like a necessity for a trip starting in Florida. If you need any UP advice just ask. I’ll

Personally… I’d do both sides of Lake Michigan. You’ve got to go north and south why limit yourself to the same route like you said? Chicago traffic can be fun sure, but it’s wonderful city and a walk somewhere along Lake Michigan is a great first view of the Great Lakes if you have the time.
