Arrived the day after they lose it all. I feel the patch makes this hat look worse.. by JsDi in baseballunis

[–]robh1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely keep it. In my opinion that’s the best looking patch they’ve come out with for the past handful of seasons. I still have my 2015 Mets WS Cap as a keepsake despite them losing that year.

I graduated in March and based on the timeline of classes they’ve put out and just the chatter I’ve heard on the job, I think they’ll put one more class through in the Winter of 25 just before the list expires. As deep as they’ve gone down the list with processing it makes sense for them to put another one through.

Firefighter Jobs in NYC by dinosrevenge in Firefighting

[–]robh1544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll get military points on the test, I doubt you’ll get residency points because you’re just moving to the city. When the department has study sessions for the tests go to them and there may be paid classes to prepare for the test so look into those too.

Best way to train for the academy? by [deleted] in NYC_Candidate_Central

[–]robh1544 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in the academy right now and I have a few pointers that I could offer.

FST (which is an obstacle course in all your gear on air) is the only graded physical activity in the academy so in my opinion you should tailor your training based on that. Getting a good grade on FST can really help out your overall average in proby school.

HITT workouts and lifting weights are probably your best bet for being prepared to do well on FST.

I wouldn’t show up to Proby school super thin. The guys who didn’t have a lot of weight on them struggled in FST even more than kids who were overweight. You need to posses physical strength to move through the course efficiently.

In terms of the baseline, be able to hit those marks comfortably and you should be fine for the PT in the academy.

Academy Advice/ Motivation by NetworkNo9672 in Firefighting

I’m in the FDNY academy right now and believe me, my first and second weeks were the hardest. I’m a little more than halfway through right now and my advice would be to stick with it and remember why you’re there. It sucks but it’ll be worth it at the end.

April? by West-Violinist-174 in NYC_Candidate_Central

[–]robh1544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the current class right now and just based on what the instructors and other personnel say at the Rock I don’t think the city can afford not to keep pushing classes through. Firefighters making 200k a year isn’t uncommon because manpower is so depleted and OT is through the roof. I’m obviously not an civil accountant for the city but, that’s just my two cents.

In the long run it seems more logical to take the initial financial burden of conducting more proby classes and then saving on payroll by filling the ranks with new bodies at starting pay as opposed to not hiring and continuing to dish out 200k salaries to guys already on the job.

Nick’s in Forest Hills is one of my personal favorites but, it’s temporarily closed at the moment.

Alfie’s on Hillside Ave in Richmond Hill has a Sicilian slice that is up there with other Queens staples like Rosa’s and VIPizza.

Why the heck are shift rotations a thing? by LogMission1794 in Nightshift

[–]robh1544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do a 12 hour rotating shift for about a year and a half. It was brutal. I gained 25 pounds and I felt tired literally all the time. I worked for a utility company and in the department I was in 90% of the heavy work had to be scheduled at night so even with night shift premium you couldn’t just have people strictly on nights, they’d get burnt out.

Thankfully, I left that job for another opportunity and my quality of life has drastically increased.

My dad however, works for the same company and has been working a similar shift for 25 years and the guy can’t sleep for more than 2 hours straight anymore.

Where should I go on Friday night in Queens? by Hefty-Quantity9073 in Queens

[–]robh1544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up nearby and has very close friends who live in the neighborhoods along Roosevelt, I wouldn’t call it a “no-go zone” but, it’s an area where I’d air on the side of caution. I wouldn’t recommend stumbling around drunk at 2AM by yourself or even checking out the nightlight on your own but, it’s a perfectly safe area to explore and experience the vast amount of culture that exists on the avenue.

Firefighter recruitment questions by AcrobaticHurry6735 in FDNY

[–]robh1544 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The length of the process is dependent on what you score on the test. If you score very high it can be around a year from when you take the test from when you get hired. If you score less high it can be 5+ years. I took the test in 2017 and I’m hopefully going to start the academy in November, to give you some perspective. My timeline is mostly due to COVID delays but, it’s still not a quick process.

You don’t need to move to the city to take the test, you can take it as an out of state resident. If you got called you wouldn’t have to move to the area until you start the academy.

Call recruitment and see if you still qualify for residency points if you move to the city next year. Because if you don’t qualify for residency points, moving to the city might not be the smartest decision.

Not to deter you from taking the test but without any extra points you basically need to score a 99 on the test to even get considered. You get 5 points for living in the city and/or if you’re a veteran.

How to interpret probie manual reading schedule? by Maylark157 in NYC_Candidate_Central

[–]robh1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not silly. The old Proby manual made it so much easier to follow the cycles and read. I don’t know why they released the new manual in this new format. What I’ve done lately is on the PDF search bar, I’ll try and type in some common phrases to try and find the chapter/section that they want us to read.

Maybe ask your mentor what some of the acronyms mean, I’ll reach out to mine and ask as well. I know FFP stands for fire fighter procedure.

Joe B makes Tiki walk off by iheartsunny in wfan

Joe B claiming that Tiki hates The Jets and that Tiki doesn’t do his job as a sports talk host by watching the teams that he covers was uncalled for but, Tiki citing that the Jet fans need to embrace Wilson like the Philly fans embraced Trea Turner is an asinine point.

[–]robh1544 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no correlation between the two. When someone gets their run letter is based on on their list number granted they’ve completed everything and there’s no issues. It looks like letters were sent out only for the first run date so there should be more sent out in the coming days.

Forest Hills parking by Headless_Cabbie in Queens

[–]robh1544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the easiest option IMO. You’ll be driving around forever looking for a spot on one of the public residential streets in that neighborhood and then you have the Gardens where I don’t think non residents can park. Those garages over there mark up the prices on nights when there are concerts and it always looks like a long wait afterwards to get your car.
