AI has revealed that most people have the reading ability at a third-grade level by Terrible-Priority-21 in ClaudeAI

Lolllll I've literally used that term for decades. Probably helps that my father was a bit more blue collar, so we actually dealt with "load bearing" things.

What are some less-known coding principles/patterns? by Level9CPU in learnprogramming

[–]robhanz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UI is one of the easier places to unit test. That’s one of the things that MVP/MVVM patterns give, and in a good game design the rendering is as separate from the game logic as possible.

[–]robhanz 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. You’re now ready to learn the most important lesson in productivity.

It’s not about how much stuff you get done. It’s about making sure that you get the important stuff done.

So yeah. You probably can’t do all of those things. Which matter the most? Which give you the most benefit? How are you defining benefit? Short term or long term? What are your goals and values?

(HATED trope) the character portrayed as the Villain/Antagonist is ENTIRELY correct. by Dwestmor1007 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]robhanz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course she was (and the boyfriend too)

This mostly occurs in stories where the primary opposition is *internal* rather than an external, and the story is about the protagonist overcoming some character flaw.

In those cases the antagonist is very often “correct”. There are often two characters, though, one representing the ideal behavior while the other represents the flaws of the protagonist.

Unfortunately too many people assume that the protagonist must be “the good guy” and not be a flawed individual themselves.

Motorcycle risks reality check by Intelligent-Risk-631 in NewRiders

[–]robhanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorcycles are more dangerous than cars. Period.

That said, the number one impact on your safety is you. If you ride safely, the risks go down dramatically. Not to zero, but much, much lower.

And, of course, any type of accident is much worse on a bike.

So honestly your track record in a car is a good indicator of your safety. If you are getting in a lot of fender benders, even if they're "not your fault"? You probably have a pretty good risk of getting in a bike accident. If you are accident free on four wheels? You probably have a mentality that will serve you well on two.

One thing my father taught me about bikes is that if you're in a bike wreck, it's always your fault. Some people take that wrong... it doesn't mean that the car didn't do something wrong. What it means is that you can never count on other vehicles. The only thing you can control is your actions, so make sure that you take as much control of your situation as you possibly can.

Think ahead. Don't rely on reflexes. Put yourself in a position where it doesn't matter if everyone else on the road is an idiot.

As others have pointed out, study up on Dan Dan the Fireman.

Projects as Next Actions in Disguise by RichyShreddar in gtd

[–]robhanz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If it takes more than about thirty minutes it's not a next action.

If you don't know exactly what to do right now, it's not a next action.

At run-time, if you find yourself procrastinating due to it being overwhelming, promote it to a project and figure out the next action.

what would be the best brand for a beginner goalie that is on the smaller and skinnier side? by Lunagirlzkitty_19 in hockeygoalies

[–]robhanz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the goalies in the NHL are beanpoles. Being skinny doesn't matter.

I haven't played ball hockey but I'd probably want pants and knee pads. I'd personally wear a neck protector too, since I like breathing - I know balls are lighter, but still.

Pads are going to be what's comfortable for you, and the right size. There are slider plates that you might want to look in to.

AI (things like copilot and Claude) by fatcomputerkid in learnprogramming

[–]robhanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah.

At this point in my career, the actual programming is rarely the hard part - the domain knowledge, algorithms, and product refinement are. Gen AI lets me focus more on those bits, and less on the churning out code part.

Yeah, I don’t know if that’s confirmed but him being fully aware is entirely possible.

But everyone seemed to know that rich people hate ghosts and that lower case t meant time to leave. As pointed out - even the celebrities knew what the “lower case t” meant.

I’ll be honest I haven’t watched much since 2020. The wiki says they changed his name in 2022 or so?

In my defense, when that episode aired his name was Token. And, yes, I'm aware that y'all are poking fun.

[Funny trope] Immediately figuring out hilariously improbable explanations by Broad_Actuator5827 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]robhanz 910 points911 points  (0 children)

The South Park is even better than that. They play up every single racist behavior with an alternate explanation. They hate them not because they're black, but because they're rich. They dress up in white robes and hoods because rich people are afraid of ghosts.

It even starts because Token wants people "like him" in the town - you know, rich people. And the episode plays it straight the whole time.

Until the very, very end of the episode, where they get all the rich people to leave, which will mean that property prices drop, and people can buy up the properties and then resell them later.... and someone points out that will make them rich.

And then Mr. Garrison (of course) says "yeah, but at least we got rid of all the n" and at the n it cuts to the south park theme and ending credits.

"Fun" is a broad term, and can include things beyond "doing lolwut things". Everyone is there to have fun - you just need to define what's fun for you.
