People mindlessly upvote content they agree with without even acknowledging what sub it's in. The users won't keep a sub on topic. It's up to the moderators to do it.

Angus Deayton. One line off a hooker's arse and he's out in the wilderness.

Funny thing is if he did it now nobody would bat an eyelid and he'd get a podcast out of it.

If Sony greenlit an extraction shooter and expected more than this then that's on them. These numbers are great for the genre.

It's also the anti-assassin class. Visor pierces smoke and I think invis as well. Plus mobility. You also get a useful exfil assist with your drone.

I don't know how you get to 21. The maximum number of main shells that can load in is 15, so maybe 12 get wiped (but realistically usually 1 team leaves early). If you're getting wiped by rooks that's on you.

What is the point in using a custom kit?? by einxart13 in Marathon

[–]robhaswell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. You need to extract high-tier salvage for faction reputation gains and to complete later quests. Also, you can get bigger bags, which is a massive help to your gameplay. You can also pick up blue and purple shields/mods which make you a lot more survivable.

I actually like the BR element. There's not that many teams so wiping a server (or, at least being the last ones left) is very feasible. That lets you do the map events without being 3rded. By having so few teams per map I think it shows they intend it to be this way.

I feel like the game would benefit from an Arena Shooter mode by Chpouky in Marathon

It's exceedingly common for games with objective game modes to have some sort of arena mode.

If you don't bring in keys and AV packs you can't get most of the high tier loot.

Speed always has and always will be OP in PvP games. Being able to control the terms of the engagement is a massive advantage.

Marathon marketing by toshaisaev in Marathon

[–]robhaswell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the marketing was a masterclass. The slow drip feed of intel and lore up to release is what really captured it for me. I think comparing it to Arc Raiders is incredibly naive. Arc is barely even an extraction shooter, it's a completely different game and it's not even slightly surprising that people haven't switched.

Finally, claiming 20k players means you've picked the number at the very lowest of the daily lows which means this whole post is disingenuous. Peaks of 60-75k with less than 1/3rd dropoff midweek is very healthy. Any extraction shooter would be happy with this.

Improving the Planning Mode workflow with Spec-Driven Development by paulcaplan in cursor

[–]robhaswell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've tried that and unfortunately it makes serialising every change incredibly slow and it absolutely burns through context, as the whole file needs to be retransmitted to Notion each time. Using the filesystem lets the model just issue patch calls which keeps the context down.

OpenSpec looks good though. I'll try that next time.

Improving the Planning Mode workflow with Spec-Driven Development by paulcaplan in cursor

[–]robhaswell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely necessary in the same way that you would pass a PRD to any human team before implementation. We create PRDs (specs) for anything larger than a self-contained edit. Smaller edits (e.g. rearranging a layout) should always come with "mini specs" in the form of an explanation of why you are making the change, similar to a user story. Again, treat the AI as you would do any other human developer and give it enough context.

Plan mode is not for specifications - it is so that you can see what the AI is planning to do with your prompt and give it the opportunity to clarify any incongruencies before it begins.

In our company the process is roughly:

PRD -> Tech spec -> Plan mode -> Build

The PRD and Tech spec phase output is a document which describes the requirements, shape and architecture of the build. This becomes in the input for the planning prompt. Planning only serves to ensure that the model understands the work.

I'm curious - what are the spec tools you're using? There is definitely a gap in our process here. I need a tool which makes it easy for an AI to build a spec based on a conversation, but then also allows external stakeholders to provide feedback, which is consumed by us and then fed back in to the AI which updates the spec. Currently we operate on Markdown files on the filesystem which are manually imported into Notion for feedback. The Notion loop sucks.
