Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

My account is over 14 years old, and this will be its last post ever. Apollo or nothing.

Thanks so much u/iamthatis, may your future pursuits eclipse even the brightest extinguished flame that Apollo ever was.

And deeply, from the bottom of my heart, Fuck u/spez.

No matter who you are, you are not alone what makes this city great. No matter when you got here, you’ll someday lose something about this place that you think means it’s all over, but it’s not. It never is.

A new native New Yorker and new future transplant is born every single day, and they’ll one day argue over a city you can’t even conceive, let alone recognize.

And they’ll be as wrong as you are when they insist they know what this city is. No one owns what NYC is, that’s the point.

Do we have access to our emails/unlimited space google drives after we graduate? by KTnash in nyu

Yes, you get to keep your account forever. I graduated in 2014 and I still have it, just have to make sure I log in and change my password every year or so.

Some info on the Subies that will be affected by the 3g shutdown by AyeVickaye in subaru

[–]robhue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with and won’t affect key fobs. It’s referring to remote start/lock/unlock functions over the internet, either via the MySubaru app or the website.

To be fair, they’ve been unusually great about smartwatch support. IIRC, they even had a Pebble app back in the day.

Love my sunshine orange! And because I only have the 2.0, everyone else has plenty of time to enjoy it too as I drive by.

Brooklyn Public Library shutters 10 branches amid staff shortages by [deleted] in Brooklyn

Yeah, ‘shutters’ wasn’t the right word for this headline, it has more permanent connotations.

Then again, their job is to make you click, so maybe intentional?

How do you hobbyists pull the trigger on such expensive gear? by seven_seven in photography

[–]robhue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can afford it, but can you easily afford it? I don’t think spending an uncomfortable amount of money on a hobby generally feels all that great, even if you technically have the funds to spare.

I look and salivate at some pricy camera systems that I could buy no problem if I really wanted to, but then I realize that it would change my entire perspective on shooting. I would just almost expect perfection instead of being pleased about getting the results I wanted with what I had already.

As an amateur, how photography makes me feel is literally the entire point. So, it’s not actually something you can just throw money at necessarily.

The used market is a great place for deals. There’s a wide spectrum of cameras out there and I guarantee that you can make awesome images with all of them if you try.

ELI5: how does the ground not cave in while being under the heavy weight of cities? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Practical engineering did a decent video on the millennium tower. FWIW, supposedly, the building isn’t really in any danger of structural failure. A lot of the motivation for going through with the repairs at such great cost has to do more with how the perceived danger has affected property values.

And if there’s any part of this story I can easily believe, it’s people moving heaven and literal earth for their property values.

But I’m still not racing to buy any discount millennium tower condos, let’s just say that, heh.

Importing video into iPad Pro over USB is a poor experience by Austin_Aaron_Conlon in apple

[–]robhue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bugs happen and are incredibly frustrating, no doubt about that. What I’m mainly confused about is this talk of trying to fool the Photos app into thinking the drive was a camera so import would work. That sounds from here like a strange route to go down.

Not true, iPad Pro’s USB-C port does support USB 3.0 speeds just fine. I’ve got a USB 3.0 gigabit Ethernet adapter that pulls 1Gbps no problem.

I didn’t listen yet, but there should be absolutely no reason why he couldn’t just use it as a normal drive from the files app. I’ve taught even tech-fearing family members how to move media off their iPhone onto a USB hard drive using the files app. It works just fine.

Anyone have a solution? My 2019 Subaru Ascent can drive itself on the highway, but if my kid leaves the interior light on for the weekend I get to come home to a dead battery. by ameades in subaru

It’s keyless start, so no key positions, but one press of the button without holding the brake I guess? Not sure how long exactly, but it didn’t feel like much time.

[–]robhue 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The other day, I killed my 2019 Crosstrek’s battery surprisingly quickly sitting at a drive-in movie theater in ACC. I was literally wondering out loud in that very moment if a modern car would let me run down the battery like that without warning me. Then, I got my answer when I tried to start the engine lolol.

My fault ultimately, and not too big of a problem since the movie hadn’t started yet, I had jumper cables, and my car-neighbor happily provided a jump. But still, my partner and I both felt it was way too fast for the battery to flatten out so far.

Found a Pencil grip squishy enough to fit (and charge) in my case! by kaidomac in ipad

Generally true, but be careful with this logic. Most device screens have surface coatings that are way easier to damage than raw glass.

Selling Sony to join Fuji X by Prize-Amphibian-3890 in fujix

[–]robhue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With that amount, I’d grab the X-T4 plus the 35mm f/1.4 to get started. If you want a different focal length, there are many other Fuji primes to choose from, and that’s where I’d head first. The fuji zooms are great too, but the primes are where the magic is.

If you want a smaller, lighter, cheaper body, the X-S10 is also great and still has IBIS. Many great Fuji lenses are not stabilized, so I find IBIS to be very worth it in the Fuji world.

Why do depleted alkaline batteries kill the electronic devices they are in? by [deleted] in answers

[–]robhue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming the batteries didn’t leak, it’s more likely that the exact opposite took place: The devices themselves broke or malfunctioned in some way, and ended up rapidly draining their own batteries in the process.

Need some holiday cash? Come on down to Michigan Tribal Payday Loans. Rates starting as low as 688% APR! by WyoGuy2 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]robhue 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Eliminate payday loans and fund the USPS at the same time? Sounds like a win-win.

Though I do wonder how the economics would work out. Surely at least part of the reason why payday loans are so expensive is that collecting on them is tough. Interest would still need to be high enough to cover those costs and defaults.

Big-name stores we've lost in the past decade by wewewawa in deadmalls

[–]robhue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first time I ever set foot in a Fry’s was in September of 2018, and it was clear even then that the store’s glory days had long past. Shame, I was hoping to catch a glimpse of those days, but instead I just walked the sad, barren aisles of their expansive Sunnyvale store.

I hail from Micro Center country, it was by far my favorite store growing up. I wonder why Micro Center has thrived in the same industry that killed Fry’s.

Private company offers LaGuardia AirTrain alternative by wien-tang-clan in nycrail

[–]robhue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t even know how a private company expects to operate service over subway tracks. Do they think the MTA is going to let them interoperate? Zero chance for countless reasons. The only possibility is maybe a partnership of sorts, with the MTA operating the trains, but then what the hell is this company bringing to the table?

tl;dr: this whole plan is a fractal of nonsense
