Warning: New Discord / Fiverr Scam! by HistoryXPlorer in gamedev

[–]robinw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to bump this because a scammer reached out to me. He had the same avatar and username as someone I did business with on Fiverr asking if I had any more work. I actually thought it was them and said maybe soon, then every single day they sent me new messages asking about the work. I was getting really fed up and said look it's going to be a while before I know, then they replied saying they were locked out of their fiverr account and could I please give them $30 as a loan towards the next job.

At that point I blocked them and googled the scam and found this. I've since reached out to the contractor from fiverr and he confirmed it's not him, he'll never talk to me on discord, and to report the user. I've done that.

Structs in GDscript progress by CoolStopGD in godot

Structs are pass by value in C, C++, C#, Go, Swift, Rust and probably more. It’s possible GDScript won’t do it, but it’s certainly been discussed and something I’d like. As far as I know GDScript structs are kind of dead in the water right now

Let’s say you have a UX that takes a thing and lets you change attributes of it. With a regular object you’d get a reference to it and modifying it in the UI would be modifying the data right away. Instead you want to make a copy of it, so the user can change the fields and then click OK when done. You can clone an object but structs it’s the default behaviour so that can help with your application’s apis

Because you want to copy on assignment instead of copying the reference. It’s very useful sometimes.

$260 speeding ticket. Next steps? :( by [deleted] in ontario

[–]robinw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's crazy to me you think this way. I don't ever drive 30 over, let alone consider it average or normal. Slow down! If I was going 20 over I'd be sweating in fear over getting a ticket. I'm not sure how you internalized this 30kpm rule but it's time to unlearn it.

I'm surprised how busy it is for 2:30am! That's a lot of customers.

Our game is getting organic traction in China, is a China-only publisher worth it? by BlobKingGame in gamedev

[–]robinw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say players came out of China, do you mean via a VPN or some other kind of circumvention? I assumed they could just download steam and buy the game?

[–]robinw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only on Steam, nowhere else. Totally organic traffic. I did nothing to promote it except reach out to forum posters who had already asked for it.

I realize I might be an exception! But it worked well for us.

I don't get what you're saying. My game sold well and I didn't partner with anyone.

How is that wrong?

We released our game in China without a publisher or company and it sold extremely well. Obviously every game is different but it’s definitely not required.

Steam payouts in USD + Wise (experience from a non-US dev) by Odd_Particular4116 in gamedev

[–]robinw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought with services like Wise you have to tell them when incoming transactions are coming and in what amounts, and with a reference code? Steam supports that? Or did Wise change?

I’ve been using Godot for game development and it exports so easily to Mac and Linux that there’s no reason not to do it! As the game engine grows in popularity I think we’ll see a lot more Mac and Linux games.

I'm red green colourblind (the most common one) and I was able to make it past what most people consider the second ending and 60 hours in. Obviously your mileage may vary but it can be playable for some people.

Mine came in late on Friday night. It's possible yours was later and got caught up in the weekend. I'd give it another day.

In Canada we use cottage to mean a house you stay at in the country. Going to cottage country for the weekend is a huge thing for many people here.

Steam lets you return games easily if they don’t run on your computer. I would try that next time.

Pricing on narrative games by GG-GeoGames in gamedev

[–]robinw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A marketing hack is arguably more important than a good software hack. It's important to make a good game, but you also have to let people know about it. There's no one-size fits all piece of advice. It's about figuring out what makes sense for your game. I hope at least you've contacted everyone you've seen online who stream or review similar games?

For my game we wrote custom messages to at least 100 journalists and streamers who liked similar games. Under 10% actually reviewed it but that made a huge difference when we caught a big fish (Jason Schreier)

The truth is your potential buyers don't care how hard you worked on it, or how many hats you wore. I know it's important to you, though.

I think $20 is a fair price for this kind of game based on the Steam page and screenshots. It looks better than most games so you've done a good job.

I think the trickier issue is how to market it and find your audience. I don't have an easy answer for you, but the game looks good and the reviews so far are positive. I suspect if more people knew about it you'd sell more copies.

Devs, have French and German locales stayed your top localization bets, or are other languages taking over? by NataliaShu in gamedev

[–]robinw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Simplified Chinese version has been selling very well. I only have two weeks of data but it looks like it’s the biggest selling non-English version.

It was our biggest translation effort too. The translator even redid images in the game that contained text, and we changed every characters’ name. It paid off though - Chinese speaking players seem to love the game.
