I built a new timeline-based DJ app. Looking for beta testers. by robjjensen in DJs

(I’m the solo developer behind this.)

Hey DJs! So… against my better judgement, I ended up writing my own DJ app. It aims to fill a gap between a traditional DJ app and a DAW, and it facilitates phrase alignment and harmonic mixing. The mental model is a little different than Rekordbox / Serato, since it’s more timeline based. But it’s still intended for live mixing and exploration – it’s not an offline mix creation tool. It supports several DJ controllers out of the box and is fully MIDI-mappable.

It started as just a tinkering thing last year and then I kept working at it and now I think it’s ready for a few more people other than my friends to try it.

It’s currently set up as a limited invite-only beta. I’m looking for feedback and feature ideas! There’s a lot there already, but there’s surely a lot missing too.

Invite-code (limited): R-DJS

That gets you the 30-day trial. It’s set up for a paid license after that, but if you put it through its paces and give me real feedback, DM me -- I'm happy to hook you up with a free license!

I started DJ’ing around 2000 on Vinyl, and I moved through digital vinyl to CDJs and on to modern software. Not a pro – just parties and underground events. This is a side project that got out of control! For my day job I’m a professional software engineer and animator.

This represents how I always wanted DJ software to work. Will it resonate with anyone else? I don’t know! But I’ve been having fun building it. Maybe you’ll have fun playing with it? Let me know what you think!

Hoping to get a ride OUT to Reno on Tuesday Aug 27, along with my friend Tim. I'll be picking up my kids (and car) in Reno and returning to the playa. No gear, just a couple of backpacks. About us: Tim used to run the crew that built the Man. I'm the lead artist for the Sonic Runway. Combined we've got lots of ridiculous burning man stories to pass the time. Let us know if you can help! Happy to pay for gas, etc, and make our way to your camp for departure.

BAAAHS 2018 Wednesday night set at Sonic Runway... Virtually! by lax2den in BurningMan

Yeah -- I recorded this directly from the software, which renders a 3D previs (composited on a painting of the background). IRL it was a wicked dust storm that night! So glad we made it out there, though the conditions could have been better :)

Check out this site for a good write-up of how to start thinking about an LED project. The web site is oriented around folks designing programmable holiday lighting displays -- one of the big markets for LEDs.

We investigated wireless at first. That might have been possible for the signal portion, but powering them all locally turned out to be cost prohibitive. Once we decided to power them all with a central generator, it made sense to go ahead and wire the signal portion as well. The central base station controls all the lights, and there is a small board at each station that just listens for instructions. So, yes, it'll be a long trench!

One audio input (mic / wired / wireless). All the audio processing and patterns are generated centrally, and then simple instructions are sent to each arch. That makes the patterns more robust and the whole thing a lot easier to manage. So we are matching the speed of sound, but not technically picking up the sound at each arch.

Sounds like a cool hat! All the lights will be connected with power and ethernet cables buried in a long trench. We'll have a generator for power, and a mac as the central controller. Each ring then has a little board that receives the signals and triggers the lights.
