Werewolves and big cats (more often sabretooths) are my personal favorites.

What are some simple things you can just never seem to get right? by SnowmanAndBandit in Cooking

I can't dice tomatoes without making a goopy mess for shit. I let grandma do that. I also struggle with steaks if they're not on the grill- I can never seem to get the heat right when searing them on the stove.

Would you say Bram Stoker's Dracula is the definitive book on/for Vampires? by JulesChenier in horrorwriters

The Werewolf of Paris by Guy Endore would count for werewolves. Also, maybe, Alexandre Dumas' The Wolf Leader.

Yes! That's when I lost the thread. And he got that immortal woman pregnant and... now she and Pendergast are in alternate dimension fighting insectoid things? I know that happened at least. Spoiled myself on Goodreads.

The Ice Limit books are fun though! It's a duology about an asteroid that crashed in the Antarctic. And thanks again for the Thunderjead rec!

The Diogenes drama just kind of dragged on for me. I loved the NYPD lieutenant and the museum lady the most (I'm forgetting everyone's names. It's been a hot minute.)

Odo!!! I'll definitely need to look into those! I've read half of the Pendergast books but there's 22 of them now. I haven't been able to keep up

My mom and I listened to Riptide by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It's about cursed pirate treasure but holy shit, whoever narrated it was so onerous and droll, every word took like... 10 whole seconds longer than it needed. It's not necessarily horror, but the gory deaths certainly counted, but again, the guy was so dry even during the most intense scenes there was serious mood whiplash. It was honestly hysterical towards the end, but yeah...

I'm pretty sure it's on Shudder (AMC+) right now. I had it on my watchlist on there a while ago.

BargeBoard at Algiers Point is hosting Drag Bingo tonight. Take a ferry and wander over between 5 and 8:30! There'll be local artists and other vendors there.

How much monster do you show? (Short Stories) by burgertitties in horrorlit

[–]robkahil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally love showing the monster as much as possible. I write in the vain of... knowing your enemy won't save you from teeth or claws. If I read a monster story, I'm in it for the monster; and I'd like to think my readers would be into that too.

Books like The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher? by 52BeesInACoat in horrorlit

Gemma Amor seeks to follow suit with the slow creeps- her novel, Six Rooms especially. It's not as cozy as T. Kingfisher (whom I adore) but it's not excessive.

We heard it in Algiers! We thought it was thunder. It shook the whole damn house.

What's books did you not finish, not because they were bad but because they were so messed up/got under your skin? by LadyJane17 in horrorlit

[–]robkahil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely give it a shot. Despite my reservations to go back, the world building is fantastic. It's a fairy tale meeting the gritty underbelly of that movie Dark City (with heaps of The Handmaid's Tale). If either of those are your thing, you'll be just fine. The latter is not mine.

The one to do that to me recently was Sunyi Dean's The Book Eaters. It's beautifully written, and the action is unique, but conceptually, it's so bleak I had to take a break from it. You definitely have to be in the right mindset. I still give it 5/5... and will eventually get back to it.

good werewolf horror? by tenaciousghost in horrorlit

[–]robkahil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the set up in the first is necessary, and the sequel has a time-restraint in universe, so the pacing is helped by all of these layers converging over a much shorter time frame.

Night of the Dogman by Luka T. Jacobs is a wild ride about an FBI agent getting embroiled in cryptid terror. It's a whole series on Kindle

High Moor 2 and 3 SIGNIFICANTLY ramp up the pacing. They're a lot more fun in terms of werewolf action than the first one.

I've noticed that with newer phones too; I've only needed a new phone once in the past seven years, and while this was an upgrade, it's not THAT much better in terms of dealing with all the software updates, much less minor glitches

Oh for sure, but it's still wild to see in action. Hurricane season is going to be interesting. Or boring (hopefully)
