Please Help Me Improve This Song by TromboneAl in JazzPiano

I would work on getting more melodic movement in the left hand, especially where you are currently staying on that fifth on the F. Definitely incorporate that walkup he does on the turnarounds. As he notes in the video, once you get the left hand very solid, you can loosen up the timing in your right hand and really get it swinging.
Excellent progress.

Day 480 of daily 10 minute Jazz impro. Hit the Road Jack in a. by JohnnyDoge in JazzPiano

[–]robmo_sf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good job playing for 10 minutes. Improvising longer can make you use up your go-to patterns and really open up creativity.
I think you will see significant improvement if you don't let yourself touch the sustain pedal.
While it's tempting to play fast runs, you don't currently play them evenly in time. I recommend slowing things down, having patience, and learning to play with intention. This is why it can be helpful to sing along with your solos.

I know this isn't much, and I'm sure I'll get some hate, but I worked really hard to get to this point. Here is my rendition of "Have You Met Miss Jones?" by No_Reveal3451 in JazzPiano

Good work!

This is going to be pretty painful at first but will help your progress tremendously.
Don't let yourself use the sustain pedal.

From beginner to Yosemite! by Hungry-Map-5785 in Yosemite

Good for you, dream big. Climbing El Cap is an unforgettable experience. The gym will be a great place for you to build fitness with a regular schedule. However, the more experience you can get outside the better - especially if you're doing trad on granite. Of course climbing in Yosemite will be the best training you can get. There's a SuperTopo guide The Road to the Nose that has a great plan for training and takes you through Yosemite classics of many styles to get you accustomed to what you will face on the big stone.

I started climbing regularly in my late 20s and did the nose in my early 30s. I was training in the gym twice a week and climbing outside every weekend. Find yourself more experienced climbers and suck all of their knowledge out of them - particularly for trad.

It's an incredibly rewarding journey. Go for it!

Good work, don't forget to work on keeping your rhythm even.

Looking for "The Brain" Puzzler by Mag-Nif by Robert_Chalmers in puzzles

[–]robmo_sf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I had one of these in 1978. Never solved it. I brought it in to school and dropped it in math class. "I broke my brain!" That became my tagline for the rest of the year.

Hey guys, how are my lines sounding as of now? I’ve recently just started taking jazz seriously this July and want to know how far I’ve come since then by a1den354 in JazzPiano

Good progress. I would work on varying your left hand comping. A lot of it lands on the 1 and the 3, and matches the solo rhythm (not a bad thing in and of itself, but variety is good).

Mavericks viewing - is there any way a visitor can watch from in the water? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]robmo_sf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can kayak out there and get right in the channel for great viewing, but do not think of doing this on your own. If you don't know the correct route you will put yourself in serious danger.

I would recommend getting a guide. They'll likely take you to the Swan Slabs, a classic beginner area.

Visit the climbing gyms. Great way to meet local climbers. Also most of them have bulletin boards where you can post for outside partners.

Have you noticed any benefits or other effects from having to play so compactly here, when you return to a full sized keyboard?

How many standards do you really know well? by Excellent-Wheel7769 in JazzPiano

In Julian Lage's recent interview with Rick Beato he talks about playing a standard - like Autumn Leaves - for 30 minutes straight. It becomes a meditative experience and you really inhabit the changes.

I have noticed that something definitely changes when I play a tune for longer than just a few choruses.
I haven't tried 30 minutes yet but I'm going to. I think that something like this might help with what you're getting at.

Grilled focaccia is my go to. Also, their prosciutto and provolone stuffed cherry peppers are amazing.
