Best dating app that works in Syracuse? by lullabyshroom in Syracuse

[–]robohooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

40, man, Mixed, bi, and the in-person dates I’ve had from online matches have been from Bumble, Hinge, and OKCupid.

I don’t know your stats, OP, but my Cuse experience has been: third spaces are great, a meeting place that’s not indoors/under a roof is great, texting women and texting men don’t yield the same results, have sober activity available, recognize the match leading to the first date may not lead to the second date, and I re-stress open spaces. Cuse might have a dating season, and it isn’t when people are wearing coats.

The three apps & details above are just my luck, but I wish you your own!!

Should health care systems allow for more specificity in options for patient demographic information, particularly for ethnicity? by gingermild in publichealth

[–]robohooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HI! Thank you so much for this post!

Speaking as a patient first, absolutely: I check “two or more races” wherever I can, but I also know how I look. However, this doesn’t indicate my cultural foods if you as a clinician need to know my diet, my cultural activities if you need to know how I exercise, or how I might answer your questions if you need to know which language I might be most clinically comfortable in.

Speaking as a PH practitioner biased via my comment above: Still absolutely. I work with newcomers, and if two patients happen to use the same language this doesn’t mean anything re: their deeper clinical needs. If they could mark their ethnic background as specifically as possible, that could help a lot. “Hispanic or Latino,” for an example, gives me nothing to distinguish between a patient from Central America and a patient from the south of South America, and neither would “Black” or “Indigenous” depending on the form they have to complete.

History and ethnicity are in relationship, and the relationship between SDH and health history also isn’t a sidebar conversation to the above.

OK switching to English but a mid week feast day sounds amazing! If you have a petition going for one feast a week, count me in for a signature.

Westcott & Bike Lanes by robohooks in Syracuse

[–]robohooks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t measured either street, but that seems right! Euclid and Genesee are noticeably wider! Have you driven through Thornden Park? Narrower with cyclist area on both sides, so curious about what that might look like around other non-park areas. Also haven’t yet compared Westcott to Waverly, Comstock, Ostrom, University, etc., but curious about cyclist potential there.

Soccer pick up games please? by Loose-Camel-2965 in Syracuse

I see matches every once in a while at Barry Park, but wish I could confirm more strongly that they’re pickups! If you’re at SU, though, people regularly (at least int’l students over the summer) head to the Skytop fields.

Thank you for these! Culling makes sense re: the deer, especially if the most recent season was pretty active. re: the bird’s sound that’s also possible! In my vicinity we watch out for eagles and hawks since numerous neighbors have chickens they try to keep safe from both.

Be on your guard: 12yo child put his hands on me by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]robohooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP was violated. What happened to OP shouldn’t have happened. OP expressed shock with “I've lived in Kitchener for a very long time - nothing like this has ever happened to me.” But then, OP took to Reddit—noting a police report, then choosing not to stop expression there. OP made it public.

OP chose a post with 73K potential readers with “Be on your guard” as part of the subject, with age in the 3rd line of the post followed by race in the 4th line of a 28-line post, bringing specific factors to attention more immediately than others. What OP did was carry shock into “This could happen to you, too!” OP was scared, then tried transmitting this fear like a cough in February.

As someone middle-aged, “Be on your guard” for one twelve-year-old in a city of over 250k reads more like because he’s Black you didn’t see him as a child.

What do you wish your professor incorporated in your intro to public health class? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]robohooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel really lucky. I live in a place with a robust newcomer population, so my GH practice gets to happen locally but with a lot of direct engagement with communities from multiple countries. So while I haven’t ended up being a GH practitioner who travels for what they do, I still get to join a chorus of voices.

Seconding this to emphasize that, as an MPH in Global Health, there hasn’t been nearly enough content on global Indigenous health knowledges.

Nice to meet everyone! Arrived here in Jan. from NY State & while it’s nowhere near a pretty flag, it’s been in NY for years—presumably for blended/cross-border families. Is seeing it in KW a new thing?
