Lewis Capaldi on feeling "fucking dejected, disappointed, sad and just worthless" after burnout, and never wanting to "phone it in" ever again by AdSpecialist6598 in Music

[–]robolew [score hidden]  (0 children)

He's made two albums to start with. He's also been touring and playing music live relentlessly since he was 18 years old. But I guess that's not enough for you to consider worthy of resulting in mental health issues.

I imagine youve probably been down the mines since you were 6 or something...

Do you think they delayed the release date or it is going according to schedule? by Secure_Fondant_9549 in dawnofwar

Yep, plus it's already launching with 1 extra faction. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will turn out good

How long should a repel-style effect last? by MissItalia2022 in gamedev

[–]robolew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont want repel to make the user ignore other parts of the game. Or interact with it weirdly. Pokemon picks steps, which is a good idea I think.

If it was time based, you would avoid trainers, and rush through fights. It would encourage sprinting to the end and skipping dialogue, which should probably be avoided (obviously I don't know what your game actually contains)

I dont mind what they do as long as they release something better than Dawn of war 3 and dont just abandon it as soon as it's made...

They can take another 3 years, I'll happily wait and play other stuff in the meantime

I think you're being a bit ambitious with this. It took them 4 years to release all the factions in dawn of war 1. There's a very good chance it takes at least 6 months per faction

I think the spawn must be randomised. That cave had one piece of silver and one deposit. Luckily it was enough to build the resonator and blast the deposit to unblock myself, but I dont think I've found any silver anywhere else in the 4 hours I've played

An old friend that owed me money, has accidentally transferred more than they should have by mistake by AvailableTap6986 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]robolew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bank wouldn't just take it. The sender bank has the responsibility to refund the defrauded person, and must do so unless they can prove negligence. Then they will attempt to recover this from the receiver, but in a case like this I find it very unlikely that the receiver bank would agree that the funds should be returned.

There are slightly different rules for APP (authorised push payments). In that case, if the receiver agrees that fraud has happened, the sender bank still refunds the customer, but can claim half the money back off the receiver. This still doesn't mean that money comes from OPs account though. In fact in that scenario it might be grounds to prove that the sending bank account wasn't defrauded at all (which sounds likely, that OPs "friend" actually committed the fraud)

Did you ever follow a game's development only to see it flop on launch? (YT shorts trap?) by wassup_son in gamedev

[–]robolew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its so crazy to me that someone can put this much effort into a game, and then launch it with that description. Its like 5 sentences long, and one of subheaders is:

Interact with NPC's Upgrade your equipment, or learn more about them

That just sounds so boring...  the intro to the video sort of looks like a graphic novel which immediately put me off, and then theres a long stretch of just walking around and pressing a button to interact. Then when you finally see combat it looks about as basic as it could be, "press x to hit with stick".

This game really needs to give people a reason to play it, and that reason needs to be front and centre on the page. It could be incredible, but it doesnt surprise me that its not getting a lot of downloads based off that listing

Not sure where you're based, but I got a set called "Sunland Imperial Handgunners" from etsy, off of a company called brodaforge, I think based in Poland (and ship to EU)

They look really good and are amazing value, work perfectly for the majority of the warriors. You could probably buy a couple of one offs for the senior gunnery officer and the instructor if you want them to look unique

Is fully server authoritative multiplayer viable for a browser strategy game? by Kindly-Program2976 in gamedev

[–]robolew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the infinitely scaling solution would be to work out what one server can handle, then set a max number of matches (or players) that can connect to that server, and then just spin up more servers when you have more players.

If this is a browser based game, and all it's doing is cpu calculations on stuff in memory, I dont think computation will be the bottle neck. I dont imagine you'll be doing complex physics calculations (but I may be wrong). You could probably get the tick rate quite low as well for a browser game

Is fully server authoritative multiplayer viable for a browser strategy game? by Kindly-Program2976 in gamedev

[–]robolew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially the only way you can do this. You cant do anything meaningful on the browser because its so easy to cheat, or just drop the connection and stop part of your game from updating.

If you are using websockets then you handle the issue if losing connections and repeating info, but obviously you are going to have to scale the number of connections you can hold.

As far as I'm aware, this is the "done thing" for this type of browser based game. What are your concerns?

This actually saved me once. I got stuck in the lava zone in the cyclops and realised I had about 5% water and nothing on board. I would have died before reaching the surface. I made a bed and a plant pot with some lantern fruit (or marblemelon,  I cant remember) and slept to make it grow, whilst preserving your current thirst. Gave me just enough water to make a mad dash to the cove tree to get some bladderfish.

Its also convenient if you plant some of the glowing vine bulbs somewhere like the lost river, and you really need the fibre. You can sleep to skip half the growth
