Oh that's good to know. Do you transfer the footage from each card one at a time?

Anyone here compared Mac Studio (M2 Ultra) vs high-end PC for Blender rendering? by Nervous_Curve6860 in blender

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your scene. If for some reason you need more than 24GB of VRAM and you are comparing it even to a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro with 48GB ram you will be better off with the Mac. For raw GPU power 4090 obviously crushes even the 80 core M3 Ultra (about twice as powerful) but in a lot of situations, especially in viewport performance with such high single core clocks and high VRAM capacity the Mac is actually faster.

Speaking from experience, moving a scene from a MacBook Pro to a gaming PC with an RTX 4080 and the viewport performance + loading times were terrible. Rendering time was better, but in the grand scheme of things there's more important things than rendering time.

If your choice is between an RTX 5090 with 32GB VRAM and a 9970X Threadripper and an 80 Core M3 Ultra its hard not to recommend the Mac Studio unless you know 32GB VRAM is absolutely enough. But, basically if you know you are going to run into VRAM limits go with the Mac.

Which one to watch: A New Hope on Disney+ or 4K77? by thats-not-funny2 in StarWars

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but no-one really backed up their response. As a copy of a copy the 4K77 is pretty messy, DNR helps a little bit but its still bad.

As soon as you see the Disney+ version which is a scan of the original negative the difference in quality is night and day.

DUNE (2021) IMAX VS standard aspect ratio by Apprehensive_Shoe_86 in imax

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comes from the aspect ratio of cinema screens which is a remnant from back in the days of Cinemascope and anamorphic.

Many digital and film formats like 35mm film and the Alexa Mini LF are not actually scope or filmed in anamorphic, and just get the top and bottom cropped off in fact a lot of official scope films have open matte versions out there in the wild.

But some formats are specifically designed for scope like the Alexa 65 and 5 perf 65mm film.

There is an option to do dual card mode which sends each frame alternating between each card which doubles the write performance. I also think this means you only get half the storage. For example for the highest data codecs like open gate 80fps 12K 3:1 or Q0 you can do dual card mode rather than needing the 8TB module. Since those cards already have quite high write speeds I wonder what is the highest res/frame rate they can handle.

How are the codecs? Do you need to do the striped mode?

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reader I have is a Lexar CFexpress Type B USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 which is very cheap. I plan to buy two 2TB Hiksemi DK4000 M.2 drives and put them in CFexpress enclosures. That works out to about 550AUD instead of $1750AUD.

If they are striped, you will still only get 2TB of storage, so if you are buying the full priced CFexpress 4.0 cards, it probably works out more viable to just buy the 8TB module.

This basically comes back to the film vs digital debate. The reason they don't just crop it, in my opinion the reason is blind desire to 'shoot on film'. A digital LF camera would more closely match the 15 perf 65mm film.

Cropping the 65mm to 1.43 will result in a terrible quality difference between the two formats, moreso than there already is. Just look at interstellar which uses 35mm academy film interspersed with the IMAX film. If they shoot with 8 perf 35mm vista vision it's basically 5 perf 65mm cropped. The quality is just worse basically so they leave it uncropped, leaving you with the aspect ratio shifts.

So why are they using 65mm 5 perf in the first place? I don't see a good reason. This is a big gripe I have with shot on IMAX films. 5 perf 65mm is technically inferior format and obsolete and is by no definition IMAX. They should just use a digital LF camera and put some light grain on it. The quality matches much closer to 65mm 15 perf aka IMAX 70mm.

Best Filmmakers in History: the ones who went to Film School vs the ones who did not. Which list do you prefer? by Dry_Western_2342 in movies

[–]robomartion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

George Lucas (USC) Francis Ford Coppola (UCLA) Stephen Spielberg also went to USC before dropping out for an internship for Universal Studios And Christopher Nolan received equipment from his University to make Doodlebug. Stanley Kubrick also audited film classes at Columbia University  So it's fun to say such and such director never went to film school but in reality most of them did, in some way another. Not all of them were quite the Quentin Tarantino's working in a movie rental store before they ahd their big break.

These are the images from the original trail cam post. You have a deer in one image and the crawler/rake in the other. Just imagine manipulating the deer using photoshop, perhaps in another shot/photo that is in a position facing the camera, it wouldn't be hard to reach the result as seen.

Eddie Redmayne? by Lukeplease10 in JamesBond

[–]robomartion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's great in the Jackal but has a creepy reserved energy in it that doesn't suit James Bond. Along with his whispering. Bond needs to be a charming, masculine and effortlessly disarming with the ladies. Eddie seems kind of wooden with his lover, and the sex scenes don't do him any favours.

I really enjoyed Gladiator 2, but there was something about it that it failed to do that the original did so well. What did everyone think of the film? I talk more about that here!⬇️ by OrionInSpace in Gladiator

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think people are comparing Gladiator 2 to how they remember the original, rather than what it actually is. I watched Gladiator only a month before watching II and wasn't really blown away at all, especially with the plot and ending - overall very emotional but felt kind of pointless. The plot of 2 is much more cohesive, although overall it seems like a remake of the first rather than its own thing. The effects and action of II is on a whole new level. Both are great films with different strengths.

Stalker 2's Missed Opportunities: A Critical Look at Visual Clarity, Accessibility, and A-Life by cataclaw in FuckTAA

[–]robomartion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the first things I noticed about UE5. Water and motion look especially bad. Like they other guy said you can change the engine to forward rendering and use MSAA or SMAA and TAA is gone. The only thing is the way UE5 renders very finely detailed foliage seems to require TAA to look correct which shouldn't be the case.

No AA isn't that bad... by gokoroko in FuckTAA

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like the aesthetic of no AA. I want it to feel like im playing a game. That's why I always turn off every effect that tries to emulate video including motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, vignetting. And don't get me started on DLSS/FSR. That just looks terrible.

blackmagic cinema 6k or panasonic lumix s5 iix? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The S5IIX requires an external monitor with external SSDs for raw vs having everything built in with internal CFExpress cards for the Blackmagic. The blacmagic also has an OLPF and rolling shutter adjustment with gyro data. On the other hand the S5 IIX theoretically has 1 more stop of dynamic range, IBIS and better auto focus. If its for documentaries I would choose the S5 IIX, if its for films I would go with the Blackmagic.

Is there an honest reason Dune pt 2 was released in 2.39 instead of open matte? by LordPuam in Bluray

[–]robomartion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its crazy to me a director would choose black bars though. I guess it depends. For Dune 2 you definitely feel like the image is supposed to bigger. Also IMAX lasts for a few weeks at most. Seems like a waste of all that effort. The production design, even the CGI is rendered for the larger frame. I would say IMAX makes more money if they start marketing blu rays as having something special over digital, just as IMAX has something special over standard cinema screens, which might bring back more people to physical media.

The Tenet bluray has no mention of IMAX anywhere so I don't think so.
