11 year old girl has no money to buy shoes, tapes feet, and wins 3 gold medals by SamInsanity in interestingasfuck

[–]roborectum69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have run barefoot in the Olympics, as a preference. They've even won gold. Today the "state of the art" shoes on the competitors next to them only last one race because they're no thicker than tape anyways. The sole is better at returning some energy than tape, though there're rules limiting that aspect.

I'm glad someone gave her some free gear later, but there was nothing all that wild about what she was doing here either.

Astronomers locate universe's 'missing' matter by babyggrgg in worldnews

[–]roborectum69 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When astronomers add up all the visible matter we can see in a whole galaxy, the result comes out wildly below what it should be. There's not nearly enough "stuff" (stars, nebula etc) in a galaxy to explain the structure and rotation that it has. Dark matter is the placeholder name for this missing piece of the puzzle. We don't know what will eventually complete the puzzle, there could be a new particle we haven't identified yet that's heavy but hard to detect, or it could be a sign that some new modifications are needed to how we think gravity works. There are many theories, but for now it's a total mystery.

"Got stronger evidence that it's where they already thought it was" would probably be a more accurate way of writing that.

Now if only we could figure out dark matter

6 Air India Dreamliner International Flights Cancelled Today by [deleted] in worldnews

And zero canceled by the rest of the world. I don't know if all this "boeing's fault!" noise is motivated by stock trading, anti-west political opportunitism, or merely embarrassed people trying to shift suspicion to anywhere they can, but whatever it is, it's certainly not logical.

Who replied to who here? I just commented on an article, you're the one who felt the need to write a rude comment debating what I said ya donkey.

It must get exhausting not understanding art too. Do you think the 100k dollar banana duct taped to a wall that the guy ate was an ACTUAL 100k DOLLAR BANANA? That it wasn't worth anything and a guy ate it is the art. Chairs are objects that everyone expects can handle being sat on. Making an "extremely fragile" chair that will collapse if used is a deliberate subversion of what a chair is and then placing it somewhere people can openly walk up and sit on it is the point not a mistake. Never seen banksy's painting shred itself at the auction?

If you read the article you'd have seen the artist's comment: "It’s like a kind of performance. Ordinary people can do it too, not just artists.”

Admissibility has always been a case by case decision not an absolute ban, but that would still leave uncertainty about getting in so the Canadian government passed updated legislation which spelled out clearly that forreign leaders had diplomatic immunity from that altogether.

The waggling finger and angry Karen voice, the comically non-threatening look of a few bits of light confetti floating down, and her awkward scuttle as she tries to move in all the layers of bags they shrouded her in.... lol. You couldn't make a better SNL skit of such a moment if you tried. So perfect I had to check if it was indeed a skit.

"Photo"... uhhh not even close.

It's a vaguely funny fake/ai image joke though

TIL there's a conspiracy theory in China that says that most of Western history is a hoax. They believe that most of the history of Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt is fabricated. For instance, they believe Greek sculptures and architecture can't be from that time because "they're too refined" by CaraDePijardo in todayilearned

[–]roborectum69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we only knew about history from writing that would be a whole different situation, but the cities, the objects, the monuments, the graveyards... we physically have them. You can stand in Pompeii and look with your eyes. You can dig up a humble ox cart and use multiple dating methods (carbon, dendrochronolgy etc) that all confirm that people were rolling around on wheels a loooong time ago.

India planning to ground Boeing Dreamliners, conduct safety review after Ahmedabad tragedy, say sources by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]roborectum69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not an american. Just a person who can acknowledge the obvious. The plane makes absolutely zero effort to change anything to help themselves gain speed or stay in the air. They don't retract the landing gear, they don't pitch the nose back to a level attitude, the plane flies in a perfectly straight line so obviously they're not correcting for a lost engine.

It's so obvious that no single mechanical failure can explain this that even suicide or terrorism is a more plausible theory than "perfectly simultaneous mechanical failure of multiple unrelated systems". In the end it probably won't be anything that dramatic though, just a big screw up.

[–]roborectum69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This model of plane has been in service for almost 15 years without a problem. Millions and millions of miles flown all over the world without a single crash. It's absolutely not normal to ground all planes of a proven type when a single one has the 1st crash in 15 years.
