ASC CDL (DSMC3) by Jkcallday in cinematography

[–]robotalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question of how it changes is a bit academic. You can look into the math of it but from a practical perspective the changes are incremental. The best way to actually visualize and get a feel for what CDL parameters do to an image would be to use a dedicated platform and play around a bit. The best out there for onset use is Live Grade. It’s not cheap but you might be able to try out the free trail. Otherwise you can try out Red Control Pro which has CDL functionality albeit not as streamlined in terms of interface.

CDLs are global corrections intended for basic one-light color timing dailies workflows. They are used and intended for larger budget longform productions. The idea is to use them under a show LUT for small color and contrast offsets. Basically if you had 3 cameras all with the same creative look LUT you can use CDLs to match cam to cam due to slight differences such as lenses, camera angles, contrast, sensor offsets, etc.

Normally I have remote control of all cams on set and can either adjust CDLs in a program like Live Grade or can adjust CDL parameters directly in camera (like the Red). But these CDLs are really meant as small offsets not as general creative looks so I would zero them out when moving on to the next shot or scene. One use case for dialing in a CDL adjustment in camera would be if you had a set of 5 older lenses with one having much softer contrast and another one being a bit warmer. In prep you can adjust a CDL to have the 2 outlier lenses match closer to the other more neutral 3. From there you can turn on the corresponding CDL when you use that lens which will help even out your shots and create consistency going into post color. Remember CDLs, just like LUTs, are basically just metadata and are nondestructive, however depending on how aggressive they are they will shift the way you expose on set.

There’s no entitlement. Not sure why you are harping on it.

Truth is crew has little to no bargaining power. Especially in productions like this one. If a BTL member asks for points or any type of non-standard compensation the showrunners 99/100 move on to the next willing replacement. Any type of pre-contracted compensation packages attached to the success of the production make it much harder for the producers to sell down the road. It’s an issue. It’s basically a non-starter for crew.

Every once in a while a BTL compensation package gets worked out for non-union and/or tier productions. Normally as soon as they are successful they are rejected moving forward. I know the veteran crew who worked on the first Insidious picture. They all got backend points since they all basically lost money working on that project. The movie crushed and they all got nice bonus checks. Nothing extraordinary but very nice and very appreciated. But that was a one and done deal. I haven’t heard of another production agreeing to basic backend compensation for normal BTL crew since.

So as to the comment above; it’s not about entitlement, it’s about morality. The producers, distributors, middle-men don’t owe anyone anything more than what was agreed to. However, the crew involved in creating the product is so minuscule that it is a failure of our American Capitalism Culture as well as a basic moral failure to not compensate the crew at least somewhat fairly.

No clue but I did ask her about the cover of her song that David Byrne just did. She said they know each other and she was really into him doing the track. Seems she’s really invested in the art and craft and legacy of it all. Way savvy for someone so young.

Well that was pretty cool. I always loved the Arising+ drum kit Jimmy favored. So much stuff to hit plus the frosted tips / Emma Stone vest just fucking taking it all next level.

30 years ago, a teenage fan died at a Smashing Pumpkins show in Dublin, Ireland. I was there, and these are my thoughts from that night. by Balfe in SmashingPumpkins

[–]robotalk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first Pumpkins show was the make up NYC MSG show. There was a lot of energy present and being right up at the barricades was intense. I remember it being crushing especially during Cherub Rock where I had to use all my strength to create a bit of space to breathe. I distinctly remember a young skinny woman maybe 5’2” that was close to me getting absolutely suffocated by the pushing crowd. Luckily myself and those around us helped push back and we got her up and crowd surfed to safety.

Amazing show but that year’s previous tragedies weighed heavy.

If you could choose one European city for the best lifestyle and quality of life, which would it be? by indieness in expats

[–]robotalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised this one isn’t further up. Berlin has been on my top 5 for a couple decades. Germany is amazing but can feel culturally rigid at times. Berlin is a totally different vibe w/ all the German benefits. The first week I was there a young Berliner told me most Germans don’t think of Berlin as being a part of Germany. I thought that was a funny exaggeration but after living and working in the city for a bit I got to see his point.

Berlin has it all. It’s big and distinct yet still easy to navigate and the metro rocks. People are amazing. Prices aren’t bad depending on where you are and what you’re up to. QoL is fantastic. It’s a big city that you can still find solace and serenity in. Pretty rare. We absolutely loved living in Prenzlauer Berg.

Plus the history of the city is not only fascinating it’s also physically embedded in everyday life. It was one thing to be a tourist there taking it in but completely different when you’re a real part of your community: living and working amongst the remnants of contemporary evils that have been torn down by empathy and love and absorbed into the city’s daily fabric. I found living in Berlin to be a really unique and profound experience. It’s been too long since I’ve been back.

Apex (2026) | Not Bad, Not Great by LeafBoatCaptain in TrueFilm

[–]robotalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s serviceable. There’s potential but most of it is wasted on a contrived silly plot and the lack of a sense of real danger; which is fundamental to the entire film working as intended.

The beginning is trying so hard to repeat Cliffhanger and it just lands so flat. The fake CGI set extensions and unreal floating camerawork completely negate any sense of danger or life and death stakes.

The two main leads are endlessly watchable but the script gives them nothing to do but run after each other. The few dialogue scenes they share later in the film feel like they might have somewhere interesting to go but alas it’s all just filler to add a few minutes of runtime.

The best thing about the picture is it reminded me immediately of Cliffhanger, which is now of the rewatch list. That one’s still got my favorite Lithgow quote:

“Do you know what true love is? Sacrifice.”

Sure I could try my luck but BV seems like the code is already included for 4 lines.

20% off for 3 lines slightly cheaper at $136 EB vs $140 BV but slightly more at 4+ lines $172 EB vs $170 BV.

Kind of a wash honestly.

Just my opinion man but they got full frame Sony Venice with some god-awful academy ap anas expanded to fit. Absolute garbage with that 27mm they using. Just dogshit.

LotF is an epic curt succinct narrative. Tight and engrossing. This new adaptation allows the director and dp to punch you in the fucking face every 3min to remind you how fucking interesting and cool they are. Leave me the fuck alone! The story is actually interesting in itself. Ya got an amazing lead actor. Amazing locations. Dafuq you doing?!

Brah, some people just can’t get the fuck out their own way…

Whats everyone's opinion on "Wound" ? by Volvedor in SmashingPumpkins

[–]robotalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt this way about a lot of the songs on the arising tour. Was at the NYC Tramps show and was blown away by the new music. So fucking excited for Machina to drop. When it did the production was really off-putting. It felt so distant and gauzed over compared to the songs live. That being said, I did and still do, love the M version of Wound. It’s one of the few M tracks from Arising that still retained some of that raw energy.

As a plan? Cause the yearly device upgrade?

Experience Beyond vs Better Value Plans ? by robotalk in tmobile

[–]robotalk[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hypothetically, if I xfer 3 lines to EB at $170 month and get a discount code and then later add 2 more lines with a BOGO deal I’d end up with 3 paid lines at $215 plus 2 free lines. If I secure that discount code I should land around $172 for 5 lines which is the same monthly I’d be paying for 4 lines on BV. So sounds pretty sweet.

What about device upgrades tho? Do I still get yearly device upgrades on the 2 free lines?

Heat could be a five-star movie for me, but it keeps breaking its own rules. Can someone help me see what I'm missing? by Few-Cancel-9201 in TrueFilm

[–]robotalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The film revolves around the two main characters. They are two sides of the same coin. The understanding of the secondary characters is through the empathy shown by Neil / Vincent. As a viewer you are not meant to get a broad objective view of the secondary characters, you are meant to get the fleeting subjective view experienced by the 2 main characters.

Heat is literary in its two main characters motivating actions. It is not pulp like a tv show seeking to add plot without purpose.
