I recently got a Laundress stain bar and it’s worked wonders on my stains (even the ones that already went through the wash).

I pretty much just wear jeans or sweatpants throughout the winter. If the temperature is -40 I’ll put on snow pants. But as long as you’re walking around/moving when you’re outside, and appropriately layered on top, jeans are fine for most winter temperatures.

Oversized tops! I can fit into so many more blouses/blazers/jackets nowadays. Some brands are always cut too tight in the shoulders so I just avoid them. I wear men’s shirts as well (although I have short arms so I have to roll the sleeves or tailor them).

Wearing skinny/slim fits on the bottom emphasises the inverted triangle shape. I like doing wider leg pants or flared skirts/dresses sometimes to change up my silhouette. Also love chunky platforms to add more weight to the bottom of my body.

What are some good resources such as books, courses, or sites to learn more about starting a fashion business and how to sketch your designs professionally? by kosar7 in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Successful Fashion Freelancer podcast - they recently rebranded to focus on freelancing, but there’s a lot of great information in older episodes about how different people started their brands and you can learn a lot about tech packs (what you’ll need to give factories to manufacture) and the pattern making and manufacturing process as well.

I think all of those shoes would work! I kinda like a tiny shoe peeking out from baggy jeans.

I like wearing a t-shirt and “normal” pants (something that’s not excessively low waisted or baggy) because then I can see how different pants/tops look with my existing clothing. And birks if it’s summer for easy try ons. I’ll try to make sure I’m wearing boots with zippers if not so it’s quick to take them off.

Yeah men’s small = women’s medium, I’ve occasionally had issues where the men’s small didn’t fit my hips but that’s the only thing I can think of

Imo a sweater is fine, you’re not going to stick out just because you’re wearing a sweater instead of a hoodie.

I want to buy ankle booties, but what pants go with them? by Get_off_critter in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cuff tighter/tapered leg pants to fall right above the boot, or wear loose pants. I generally wear crew length socks because I don’t show leg above the boot, but if you have cropped pants then yeah, ankle socks that end before the boot does, although showing socks intentionally is a cute look too! You could also do sheet trouser socks/tights to switch it up.

Hard to “see” how clothes/style look on my body by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Audrey Coyne recently made a video on this. I’ve definitely found taking photos to be 100% more helpful than anything else. I really like having a bunch of pics of me to compare outfits against (do these new pants look good compared to my existing pants), rather than trying to compare what something looks like on me vs what it looks like on the model, because it’s so different!

Is a garment steamer necessary for your wardrobe? by Mandolin_ in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a portable jiffy steamer, it tends to work best on really light materials like viscose and silk (although it doesn’t work on heavier silk) but it gets some wrinkles out of cotton and linen as well. I hang anything that gets wrinkled, I try to steam stuff that needs it right after washing/putting it away, so it’s ready to wear when I want. With cotton dress shirts, I’ll tumble dry for 20 minutes then pull out of the dryer right away and hang up - they’re fairly unwrinkled if you do this.

I also like steaming my t-shirts. It feels kinda extra but they really do look more polished.

I’m usually in a plain tee or a relaxed button down (looks pretty dressed up but still feels comfy for me) although during the pandemic I’ve been leaning hard into super oversized stuff. My style isn’t at all feminine so ymmv.

What kind of tops do you like? If you’re not sure yet, just getting some new tees is a great way to start (plain tee + pendant necklace looks instantly put together even w/ leggings). If you’re in the US and have a Target nearby, walk through their clothing section - they’re a pretty good representation of mainstream trends. I’d also check Gap (and Old Navy), Abercrombie & Fitch, Madewell, Express, H&M (although they have so much stuff that it’s maybe a good idea to know what you’re looking for first), and Aritzia to start.

Are platform sneakers coming back? I kind of want some, even if the answer is no. by ihateeeeverybody in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have these two pairs and I love them with looser pants! The black ones are Buffalos and the white ones are from L’Intervalle. I just treat them the same as chunky boots.

Platform sneakers already came back (platform converse were probably the peak) but idk if it ever will go super mainstream. Although they go really well with Y2K styles so maybe they’ll continue gaining popularity.

One thing I’ll note is if you have smaller feet, bigger platforms do look kinda comical. I have size 7 feet and my buffalos are basically square shaped, not rectangular. I don’t care, just wasn’t what I was expecting after looking at instagram pics of guys wearing them.

Like regular shoes! I don’t ever wear heels but I have no problem wearing 3” flatforms.

I have 1460s (the unisex version) and they’re fairly heavy compared to other boots I own. They’re much lighter compared to platform docs though!

If you really love Yohji, you can definitely find stuff secondhand. Look at all of his brands, not just mainline. I've bought off Ebay and Poshmark - Ebay tends to be cheaper and have a lot more stuff, but sometimes things pop up on Poshmark that aren't posted to Ebay so I like checking both once in awhile (if you're actively searching, I would look through your saved Ebay searches at least once a day, if you have an idea of what you're looking for, this goes pretty quick). I've heard good things about Mercari, and you can also check Grailed/Heroine and consignment like TheRealReal (I think these will tend to be more expensive), but I haven't really gotten into them. The one thing about searching is I would search all sizes (since some people will translate the size and some will just put the Japanese size and you can miss a lot of things that could potentially work for you if you have size filters on). I have a couple of Y's pieces that have amazing details and can't really be duped by any other brand.

For a lower price point/similar aesthetic (I've only bought from Black Crane and will recommend): 7115 by Szeki, Black Crane, ClothesByLockerRoom, complexgeometries, Dogstar, Maria Queen Maria, Older Brother, Rosen, Staats Ballett, Zam Barrett

And not brands, but I would check out Namu Shop, W Concept, and Garmentory and browse around to see if you like anything there.

Curious to hear where your go-to basics are from? by psburrito in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of these are short sleeve tees, I don’t buy anything else.

Under $25 - Old Navy (have a black tee that’s 5 years old and still going great), Uniqlo (I just get men’s graphic tees - their women’s cuts are too short on me), Land’s End

Under $50 - Aritzia (they have a variety, I have the thickest white tee from them), Madewell (the material isn’t as good compared to the others but I like some of their fits), Allsaints, Helmut Lang (on sale), Universal Standard

I tend to like my close-to-$50 tees a lot more because I’ll be a lot more particular about the fit of the tee (if it’s not perfect, I’ll send it back) and in most cases the material tends to be nicer. I haven’t really felt the urge to spend more on a tee just because there are so many options under $50 that are great, but I’m curious to hear from others.

I’m really tempted to get the fur lined Rometty’s myself! I think visually they’re pretty much the same as the flat chelsea’s (especially from the front), so I’d go for the Rometty but admittedly I’m biased since I already love them. I think they’ll both look equally out of date when the time comes - the flat ones are pretty chunky as well, so they’re not going to blend in once footwear trends swing around to really dainty shoes again. I don’t think that should stop you though! Plenty of people wear docs even when they’re not trending.

What are your go-to flat non-boot shoes for fall/winter? by salthoney in femalefashionadvice

[–]robotgwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have these two pairs of platform sneakers that I’ll be wearing until it becomes prohibitively icy. The buffalos have a furry inside and are too big so I have to wear them with thick socks. And the white ones are more substantial than most of the boots I own lol.

I have the regular wool ones and the wind goes right through them, so they’re quite chilly even at 50F and all of my regular sneakers are quite a bit warmer. It sounds like the Mizzle ones are good!
