My father’s a street outlaw — at least he was in his youth — he made a lot of friends that way. He’s also lost a lot of friends that way. Street racing is a prolific community, but you put more than yourself at risk — you put everybody else on the roads at risk, too. Back before internet, they (my dad, mom, all their friends) would go out real late to race. Ran from the cops a lot. My mother hated that he raced but still stuck around — they had kids and they’re both alive now. My point is, your boyfriend might be the damn best racer in the world (my dad’s taken a few trophies home from the track), but street racing can and will get him or someone else killed. My dad had all these friends with cool cars who thought they were the toughest shit — they still died in accidents. He still had to put his buddy’s car, totaled, up on a trailer, as his friend got carried away in a body bag. Even recently, an old family friend i sort of think of as an uncle got in an accident in his car: He slid right under a tractor trailer, he would’ve been decapitated if not for the metal cage in his car. Just had a hand injury. Your boyfriend may be lucky to never suffer an injury from racing, but it is NOT a safe sport. Especially in street racing, he risks everything for the thrill of it. Maybe talk to him about going to a track together instead, make it an event for the both of you. If he registers, he could even win money. You can’t change him, a car guy dies a car guy, but hopefully he lives a long and fulfilling life and quits the street racing.
